watch Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is arguably Jane Austen’s most famous book, and it remains popular more than 200 years after its initial release. Understandably, it has been adapted several times since then; in fact, it’s now available as a movie, a TV show, and even a graphic novel. Below, we’ll explain how you can stream a few different versions of Pride and Prejudice online, even if you’re currently traveling abroad.

Note that official streams provide a better viewing experience than third-party ones. Not only can you expect higher-resolution video, but there’s also no chance of your stream being suddenly taken down for copyright violation. There are plenty of ways to watch Pride and Prejudice legitimately anyway, and some of these even come with a free trial. As such, there’s really no need to resort to shady, unofficial sources.

The most popular Pride and Prejudice adaptations are only available on region-locked streaming services. This means that if you’re traveling abroad, you’ll need a VPN to watch on the same platforms you would back home.

How to stream Pride and Prejudice from anywhere with a VPN

Even if you’ve never used a VPN before, you shouldn’t have any issues unblocking your usual streaming services from abroad. Below is an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to viewing regionally-restricted content with a VPN.

Here’s how to watch Pride and Prejudice online from anywhere:

  1. First, sign up with a reputable VPN provider. We recommend NordVPN, although Surfshark and ExpressVPN are two exceptional alternatives.
  2. Download and install the VPN app. Most providers permit five or so simultaneous connections, so feel free to install the VPN on any device you use regularly.
  3. Decide which of the services below you’d like to unblock.
  4. Connect to a VPN server in the relevant location. For instance, you’d use a US server to unblock HBO Max or an Australian server to access Stan from abroad.
  5. Finally, try watching something on your chosen service. The video should load right away but if not, clear your cookies and try again. If you’re still experiencing issues, we’d recommend trying a different server or asking your VPN’s support team for more help.

How to watch Pride and Prejudice online in the US

The streaming service you use to watch Pride and Prejudice really depends on which version you want to see.

Netflix US has the most popular version of Pride and Prejudice, which is the 2005 movie starring Keira Knightley. Plans begin at $8.99 USD per month, but if you’d like to watch in HD, the price rises to $13.99. Although the service used to offer a month-long free trial, this is no longer available.

If you’re looking to stream the cult British TV adaptation from 1995, you’ll find it on both Hulu and HBO Max. If you’re not already subscribed to either service, we’d recommend using Hulu. Not only is it cheaper ($5.99 per month instead of $14.99) but it also comes with a one-month free trial. This gives you more than enough time to stream the Pride and Prejudice TV show and cancel before your payment method is charged.

Still not satisfied? There’s actually a lesser-known movie version that came out in 2003 and changed the setting to modern-day Utah. Pride and Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy never saw the same level of success as its rival adaptations, but if you really want to watch it, you’ll find it on Amazon Prime Video. This costs $8.99 per month on its own, but comes included with a standard Amazon Prime subscription ($12.99 per month, with a 30-day trial).

All of the above platforms are geo-restricted. This means that you’ll need a VPN to watch Pride and Prejudice on them while abroad. Luckily, NordVPN comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. This lets you try the service completely risk-free and claim a full refund if it fails to meet your expectations.

Where else can I stream Pride and Prejudice online?

Since the major Pride and Prejudice adaptations have been out for quite a while, you can watch them from a huge number of countries. However, due to international licensing agreements, the service you use to do so differs based on your location. Here’s how to watch Pride and Prejudice where you are:

UK

If you’re in the UK, you’ll be able to watch the 1995 British TV show starring Colin Firth on Netflix UK. Subscriptions start at £5.99 per month, and unfortunately, there’s no free trial period. Note that while this service also offers a 2014 Korean TV show of the same name, this has nothing to do with Jane Austen’s book.

At the moment, the only way to stream the 2005 movie version is to rent it on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, or the Microsoft Store. It costs £3.49 for standard-definition video or £3.99 for an HD version, which isn’t too bad.

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video change their content based on your location. To watch Pride and Prejudice, you’ll have to either be in the UK or connected to a British VPN server.

Canada

No major streaming service currently carries Pride and Prejudice (2005), which means you’ll have to rent it. You can do this on several platforms, including Cineplex, Google Play, and the Microsoft Store. Regardless, the price is the same: $4.99 CAD. While Cineplex appears to be a dollar cheaper, its original listing page must be out of date, since clicking through will see the price increase in line with the other providers.

There are two ways to watch the Pride and Prejudice TV show online. If you have a Videotron account, you can sign into Illico and stream the series at no added cost. Otherwise, you’ll have to sign up for a Britbox account. Normally, this service costs $8.99 CAD per month, but it does come with a seven-day free trial. There are only six episodes, so assuming you can finish them and cancel in time, you’ll effectively be able to stream Pride and Prejudice online for free.

Illico and Britbox are both geo-restricted. In other words, they’re usually inaccessible from outside of Canada. However, connecting to a Canadian VPN server will allow you to use them as normal, even if you’re abroad.

Australia

Australian fans actually have quite an easy time watching Pride and Prejudice online. That’s because the 2005 movie version is available on Netflix ($10.99 AUD per month) and the 1995 TV series is on Stan ($10 per month, with a 30-day free trial).

Netflix and Stan are region-locked, so if you’re traveling outside of Australia, you’ll need a VPN to stream Pride and Prejudice online.

Other locations

Didn’t see your country listed above? Don’t worry: the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie is actually included in more than a dozen regional Netflix libraries, and we’ll list all of these below:

  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Brazil
  • Czech Republic
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • India
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • Lithuania
  • The Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Slovakia
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • Sweden
  • Turkey
  • United States

It’s much more difficult to stream the 1995 TV adaptation, however. While this is included in Netflix’s Mexican library, those in other countries will likely have to rent it from services like Google Play and iTunes.

Which Pride and Prejudice adaptation is most like the book?

While the 2005 movie directed by Joe Wright is likely the most familiar version to modern audiences, it made several significant departures from the novel. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; making the movie did, after all, require him to condense more than 400 pages of text into a couple of hours of video. However, without giving too much away, this version changes the ending, alters certain key plot points slightly, and pushes the setting back by almost 20 years.

In comparison, the 1995 TV show remains far more faithful, lifting moments of dialogue directly from the book in some moments and replicating Austen’s trademark wit with shocking accuracy in others. There is a compromise to be made, though: this version lasts six hours from start to end. That said, if you’ve finished the movie and still want more, it’s a must-watch.
