How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

Remote probes (learn more here), which are included free of charge with every PRTG license, provide for secure and continuous monitoring of remote networks. Thanks to TLS, the connection between the server and the monitored network is perfectly secure, while only a single port is required for the monitoring.

1. How do I use PRTG as an MSP?
You can use any of our hosted or on-premise licenses to offer monitoring as a service to your customers.
Every PRTG license comes equipped with all the features you’ll need as an MSP.
Is there an MSP partner program or do I need to enter into a special agreement?
No, there is no such thing as an MSP partner program with PRTG. If you wish to offer monitoring as a service with PRTG, all we ask is that you place the PRTG Network Monitor MSP logo on your website.

How do I offer the service?
PRTG comes with a comprehensive roles and permissions system. This system lets you define permissions in accordance with the needs of your customers: you can grant your customers full access to their sensors and groups so they can manage their monitoring autonomously, or read-only access so they can view their monitoring data but not make changes to the settings. You can also illustrate the monitoring results in charts and diagrams on a web page (e.g., on the customer's intranet).

3. How do I monitor the networks of my customers
Remote probes
Remote probes let you monitor locally distributed customer networks from one centralized location. The probes collect monitoring data from your customers' networks, then transfer the data to the server hosting your PRTG.
Alerts
If an error occurs in a network, PRTG can be configured to notify you at once (by SMS, email, push notification, etc.). These alerts can also be sent to your customers. With the PRTG notification system, alerts can also be sent in phases. For example, you can choose to have an alert sent only to the customer, and then to you (or the respective service) if the problem is not resolved within a certain period of time. 4. Are there any special conditions for MSPs?
To offer monitoring as a service, you can use the following licenses: PRTG 500, 1000, 2500, 5000, XL1, and PRTG Enterprise Monitor.
For best results, we recommend respecting the maximum number of sensors per core server defined in the PRTG system requirements.
5. Which version of PRTG is right for me?
MSPs can use any version of PRTG. If you choose PRTG Network Monitor, you’ll have to set up and run the core server yourself. PRTG Hosted Monitor runs in the cloud and allows for quick and easy upgrades. PRTG Enterprise Monitor is the perfect choice if you wish to monitor the networks of several big customers.
PRTG Enterprise Monitor also provides for greater flexibility as you can install a PRTG core server for each customer (which is recommended when monitoring large networks).
It also comes with the handy ITOps Board, which provides for a service-oriented overview and SLA monitoring. Finally, PRTG Enterprise Monitor consolidates data that is distributed across several PRTG servers. Learn more about PRTG Enterprise Monitor and the ITOps Board.
6. How do I manage permissions?
PRTG lets you define permissions to make sure your customers only see the data they need to see. For each object, you can specify whether a certain user group has no access rights, read-only access, read and write access, or full access.
