As an MSP, how do I monitor my customers’ networks with PRTG?
No matter if you have your central PRTG server installed on-premises or use our cloud-based solution, monitoring your customers’ networks works the same way:
- Install a PRTG remote probe in your customer’s system
Remote probes let you monitor locally distributed networks from one centralized location. The probe collects monitoring data from your customer’s network, then securely transfers the data to your central PRTG server.
- Define granular access rights:
PRTG comes with a comprehensive role and permissions system. This system lets you define access rights in accordance with the needs of your customer and to make sure your customers only see the data they need to see.
You can grant your customers full access to their sensors and groups so they can manage their monitoring autonomously, or read-only access so they can view their monitoring data but not make changes to the settings.
You can also publish the monitoring results via custom dashboards on a web page (for example, on the customer's intranet).
- Configure custom alerts and notifications:
If an error occurs in a network, PRTG can be configured to notify you at once via SMS, email, push notification, and other methods. These alerts can also be sent to your customers.
With the PRTG notification system, alerts can even be sent in phases to map different escalation scenarios. For example, you can choose to have an alert sent only to the customer and then to you if the problem is not resolved within a certain time.
- Generate custom reports:
PRTG lets you generate regular reports for your customers with statistics on incidents, uptime, downtime, and more. You can define the level of depth of the information you want your customer to see, including detailed value tables or more high-level charts and graphs.

What is a sensor in PRTG?
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.
On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
