Shokugeki no Soma, or Food Wars!, is a manga series written by Yuto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It was first adapted into an anime show in 2015, with a second season in 2016. The fifth and final season aired in 2020. The show brought in celebrity chef Yuki Morisaki as a consultant.
Food Wars! takes place at a culinary institute in Tokyo called Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute. The top chefs at the school are part of the Council of Ten Masters. The show follows Soma Yukihira’s quest to become a top chef. His father, Joichiro, owns a busy family restaurant called Restaurant Yukihira, but has to close up shop when he gets a new job. Soma Yukihira strives to follow in his father’s footsteps and take over the restaurant.
The Food Wars! manga series came in third in the 2014 Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics list. It was also adapted into two different video games in Japan, as well as an iOS and Android game in 2015.
