The 2019 Rugby Super League kicks off at 7:45 PM GMT (11:45 AM PST / 2:45 PM EST) on January 31. The first game will be between the Wigan Warriors and St. Helens, and afterwards, there’ll be three or four matches per week until the final on October 12. Below, we’ll let you know where you can watch every single one of these fixtures live online.
Note that we’ll only be recommending official sources. Unlicensed live streams are almost inevitable for popular sporting events but even if you ignore their copyright implications, they offer at best, a substandard service. These streams are often low-resolution, laggy, and on a delay. Further, there’s a good chance they’ll be taken offline partway through a game. There are several low-cost ways to watch anyway, so there’s really no reason to use unofficial streams.
These days, most major streaming services are geo-restricted, meaning you can’t watch from outside of a particular country. As such, you’ll have to use a VPN to access them abroad.
VPNs work by encrypting your traffic and routing it through a server in a different location. This not only protects you from monitoring by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), employer, or government, it also allows you to spoof your location and access geo-restricted services abroad. We recommend ExpressVPN: it’s a very fast service with excellent security features, a wide network, and the ability to unblock major streaming services like Netflix and beIN Sports.
You can get started with ExpressVPN in just a few minutes. Just choose a one month, six months, or annual subscription, then pay. This starts your 30-day money-back guarantee: although you have to pay upfront, if you’re not satisfied or just needed a VPN to watch one particular game, you can cancel and receive a full refund.
BEST VPN FOR RUGBY:ExpressVPN is our top choice. It provides reliable, high-speed connections, strong security, and exceptional unblocking ability, making it ideal for streaming live sports in HD.
How to watch the Rugby Super League abroad with a VPN
Once you have a VPN, bypassing regional restrictions becomes incredibly simple. Follow the steps below to stream the Super League from anywhere in the world:
- Start by choosing a suitable VPN. We mentioned ExpressVPN briefly above but you may also want to consider NordVPN and CyberGhost as low-cost alternatives.
- Download and install the appropriate version of the app for your operating system.
- Decide which of the services below you’d like to access and connect to a server in the relevant location. For example, you’d use a US server to unblock Fox Sports or a UK server for Now TV.
- Try to use the service. If everything works, it should load immediately. If not, clearing your cache and cookies, then refreshing the page usually fixes the problem.
When trying to watch live events, it’s important to test your VPN with the steps above before kickoff time. This way, if you run into difficulty, you’ll still have time to get help from your VPN’s customer support team. This also means you won’t miss the start of any Super League fixtures.
How to live stream the 2019 Rugby Super League
Good news for international rugby fans: the 2019 Super League will be broadcast across numerous different countries. Take a look below to find the official broadcaster in your area:
Sky Sports has been Britain’s exclusive Super League broadcaster since the league was formed in 1996 (to replace the Rugby Football League). If you already have Sky TV and the sports package (which is an extra £23 per month), you can watch every single Super League fixture live on the Sky Go app.
If you don’t have cable TV, you can still watch with Now TV’s Sky Sports pass. Now, this method is more convenient, but there are a couple of caveats: firstly, Now TV won’t show every match, only the main event for each day. Secondly, it’s still quite an expensive way to watch the league events since this partial coverage costs £33.99 per month. However, in the long-term, you’ll still save about £9 each month and won’t have to pay Sky’s installation or line rental fees on top.
Both of these services are regionally restricted and only available in the UK. As such, you’ll have to use a VPN to watch if you leave the country.
Bizarrely, the only way to watch the 2019 Rugby Super League is on Fox Soccer Plus. This channel isn’t available for live stream via Fox Sports Go; instead, you’ll have to sign up for the Fox Soccer Match Pass. This costs $19.99 USD per month or $139.99 per year, and includes a seven-day free trial.
As with Now TV in the UK, Fox Soccer Plus will only show the biggest match of the day. Currently, there’s no way for American viewers to stream the Super League in its entirety without help from someone in Britain.
If you already have a cable TV package that includes Fox Soccer Plus or if you subscribe to YouTube TV or PlayStation Vue, you can watch these games at no added cost. However, as these platforms cost more than Fox’s Match Pass, it’s not worth signing up specifically to watch the Super League.
All of the above services are geo-restricted, meaning you’ll have to either be in the US or connected to a US VPN server before you can watch.
Australian rugby fans can stream the main Super League fixture every day live on Fox League. Existing Fetch and Foxtel TV subscribers can simply log in to the Fetch or Foxtel Go app and watch on whichever device they prefer. Even if you don’t have cable TV, you can still watch these matches live by signing up to Foxtel Now.
It’s worth noting that this is a fairly expensive option, however. The standard package costs $25 AUD per month, with the sports pack costing an extra $29. A 10-day trial is included, though, and during this period, you’ll have access to every channel the service offers.
On the plus side, since the Super League matches start so early (around 6:30 AM AEDT), Fox League is running repeats shortly after noon. This service is only available in Australia, so remember to use a VPN before trying to access it abroad.
beIN Sports is the only official Super League broadcaster in France. Currently, it’s unclear whether this service will show every fixture or only each day’s main event, but we’ll update this post as soon as the full schedule becomes available.
This service costs €14 per month, but for longterm events like these, it’s actually far cheaper to opt for the six-month pass at €54. beIN Sports almost always offers French commentary for major sporting events, so it’s likely (although not yet confirmed) that this will be available.
Who’s playing in the 2019 Super League?
There are currently 12 teams competing in the Rugby Super League. Take a look below for the full list of this season’s participants:
|Team||Number of Super League wins|
|Salford Red Devils||6|
|Hull Kingston Rovers||5|
Which teams are expected to do well?
The Rugby Super League is something of a three-horse race between the Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos, and St. Helens. While several other teams have won the league a respectable number of times, between them, these three have only lost the title four times since 1989. In each of these instances, it was to the Bradford Bulls, a team which no longer competes in the Super League.
The two teams to watch out for are the Wigan Warriors and the Leeds Rhinos. Each has won fairly consistently in the last few years, whereas St. Helens’ seem to be somewhat past their prime. In their last outing, the Warriors handily beat the Rhinos 48-6, so they’re likely a safe bet for the coming season.
