5 Best VPNs for Norway

A VPN functions by routing all the traffic flowing to and from your device via an encrypted tunnel. The software keeps internet service providers, hackers, and government surveillance agencies at bay by making it almost impossible for anyone to monitor your digital footprint. A VPN obfuscates your location, thereby granting you access to geo-restricted content that’s not normally available in Norway.

We get into a lot more detail on each provider below, but if you are short of time, here’s our list of the best VPNs for Norway:

  1. ExpressVPN Our #1 Pick. Outstanding performance with super fast, secure and private servers. Can unblock most geo-restricted sites and services with ease. Includes 30-day money back guarantee
  2. NordVPN Operates one of the largest VPN networks globally that easily gets around geo-blocks. Nicely priced and private.
  3. CyberGhost Packs some of the fastest servers we’ve tested. Apps are beginner friendly.

  5. PrivateVPN Up and coming growing network with a good unblocking reputation.

3. CyberGhost

CyberghostWorks in NorwayTested Oct 2019

Romania-headquartered CyberGhost has had some management changes in the past year. Specifically, it was acquired by Crossrider, an Israeli firm registered in the UK. However, that has led to an enhancement in the terms of service and core product offering, which should be welcome news for potential users. The number of servers it hosts has risen considerably from just a few dozen to almost 3,000. They’re housed in 59 countries, including Norway which hosts 30 servers.

CyberGhost can help you pick a server to unblock a specific streaming service, including US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and more. Just select the “Unblock Streaming” mode within the app.

Security and privacy are CyberGhost’s forte; the company uses 256-bit encryption, perfect forward secrecy, an internet kill switch, and DNS leak protection as default.
Its registration in Romania means it’s not required by law to store any user data. Privacy is further strengthened with an internal policy of not logging any IP addresses or other data points. Additional security features include an ad blocker, anti-malware defense, and anti-tracking.

You can access the service on Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS. At the moment, a single subscription allows for seven devices to connect concurrently. This is an increase from its earlier policy of five.

Pros:

  • Low-cost option with beginner-friendly apps

4. IPVanish

IPVanishWorks in NorwayTested Oct 2019

US-headquartered IPVanish is another top-tier VPN provider that puts its money where its mouth is. It chooses to operate its entire network of servers independently, as opposed to other providers that either rent space in server farms, or outsource management to a third-party. This gives it considerable control over the traffic flowing through servers, thereby securing your online footprint.

IPVanish manages more than 1,000 servers that comprise a global footprint of over 60 countries. There’s a total of 10 servers in Norway.

This provider is a known favorite with torrenters and Kodi users because it enables them to download the Android APK directly to their device. The interface is remote control-friendly for Kodi devices that lack a keyboard and mouse. IPVanish manages to unblock streaming sites such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub.

As is the norm with the earlier two providers on this list, rigid encryption protocols are included in all packages. IPVanish offers 256-bit encryption, perfect forward secrecy, DNS leak protection, and an internet kill switch. This means your IP address will remain hidden from prying eyes. It adheres to a strict no-logs policy, meaning there’s no retention of traffic or connection logs at all.

Apps are available for Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS. This provider recently upgraded its packages to allow 10 devices to connect at the same time. That’s far more than the industry standard of five. What’s more, it offers 24/7 live chat for customer support.

Pros:

  • Operates a network of more than 1,300 servers from 75 city locations around the globe
  • Works well with Kodi add-ons for remote control users
  • Impressive speeds and reliable connections

Cons:

  • Customer support is a little slow

LARGE NETWORK:IPVanish can connect up to 10 devices. Uncongested network achives good speeds. A favourite for Kodi and Amazon Fire Stick. Won’t work in China. 7-day Money back guarantee.

Can I use a free VPN in Norway?

We’ve highlighted the five best paid VPN services for Norway but these aren’t the only ones you’ll stumble across as you search for a suitable provider. A tempting option is to sign up for a free solution because the implicit assumption here is that you gain a quality product without giving away anything in return. This view, however, is problematic.

Most free VPN providers are trying to make a quick buck. This usually entails monetization via spammy advertisements or frequent interruptions persuading you to upgrade to paid services. As such, you won’t receive a seamless experience no matter how many providers you test run. Free VPN providers tend to have weak encryption standards, wait times to connect to a server, and data caps that are abysmally low. The latter means that data-intensive tasks like streaming video, playing online games, or even accessing banking and financial services are a poor fit with free VPN providers.

Another reason to opt out is the unscrupulous nature with which some providers operate. Activities include leveraging user bandwidth to build botnet armies, and infecting host devices with malware in order to mine data.

Why should I use a VPN in Norway?

Norwegian citizens enjoy the benefits that come with a completely unfiltered internet experience as there are no content blockage filters in place nor any crackdowns on web freedom. This equates to Norway’s status as a bastion of human rights across the world as well as the larger ideals of liberalism and free speech.

However, torrenting is a problem in the country. In 2016, the owner of Norskifilm.net was fined roughly $25,000 after being found guilty of hosting films downloaded via torrenting site, The Pirate Bay. The class action lawsuit was backed by movie studios Fox, Paramount, and Sony, with the entertainment companies originally seeking a much higher penalty for the infraction.

The troubling text in the verdict is that the judge made it clear engaging in torrents was not allowed under Norwegian laws. That’s despite the fact that prior to the ruling, they definitely sat in a legal grey area. We think it’s advisable for you to use a VPN to maintain peace of mind and your safety and security on the internet.

DISCLAIMER: Comparitech does not encourage using a VPN to stream content illegally. Please consult local laws before deciding to embark on this route. If you have any questions, then it’s best to talk to a lawyer in your country of residence.

Tips for using a VPN in Norway

Follow these steps to hide your online footprint and navigate the web safely in Norway:

  • The first order of business is to decide on a provider (we recommend ExpressVPN). We encourage you to read both the mini-reviews as well as the more detailed reviews referenced at the end of each one.
  • Once you’ve decided on a VPN that works for you, then simply sign up with your credit card information.
  • After authentication, you should receive an email with login information directly from the VPN provider. Use it to connect to a VPN server of your choice.
  • Now you’re armed with an internet connection that’s private and secure!

Accessing Netflix libraries in Norway

When you log in to Netflix with a Norwegian IP address, you’ll be automatically directed to the Netflix Norway library. It doesn’t matter where you originally registered the account; Netflix will apply local content licensing laws depending on your IP address. The only way to overcome this issue is by connecting to a VPN server first. So if you want to gain access to US Netflix while in Norway, then you’ll need a VPN connection that has servers in the US.

Netflix realizes that people are actively trying to use VPNs to access more content and has been trying to actively block them for some time. Free VPNs generally don’t have the resources to overcome these blocks, so won’t work with Netflix. The paid VPN companies we’ve recommended will, but it’s unlikely that all servers will work. If you have any trouble, you can always check with your VPN provider’s customer support team to find out which server to connect to.

If you want to access a different country’s Netflix library or another geo-restricted streaming service like BBC iPlayer, you just need to connect to a VPN server in the appropriate region.

Watching Norwegian television and accessing banking services when abroad

Tens of thousands of Norwegian citizens travel outside the country each year and are interested in keeping in touch with local television content and banking services for this duration. A large number permanently reside outside Norway for work or education and have a similar requirement. As such, a Norwegian IP address can help solve these concerns and more. Just connect to a VPN server located in Norway and you should be good to go.

Public broadcasters in Norway like NRK1, NRK2, TV2, and TVNorge are available for online streaming. Some require users to register and sign in with a Norwegian IP address while others waive that requirement. However, it’s still a prudent practice to acquire a local IP address in case the rules change at some point in the future.

Banking and financial institutions in Norway like Sbanken, Cresco, and Pareto Bank won’t necessarily require a Norwegian IP address if you try to log in to their online banking portal. However, there will most likely be strict internal controls in place which means you may have to answer additional security questions if they determine you’re trying to access the account from outside of Norway. Using a Norwegian IP address won’t raise any red flags, and a VPN can help you do that outside the country.

In both cases, it’s easier to simply use a VPN to get a Norwegian IP address when resident outside the country. Just select a server located there and you’re good to go.
