Bangkok VPN

If you’re currently located in Bangkok, you may want to connect to a local VPN server. This lets you continue to access local geo-restricted websites and services while still being able to enjoy the security benefits of a VPN (and possibly even faster speeds). Likewise, traveling abroad (outside Bangkok, Thailand) means some online content from home becomes unavailable. By getting a Bangkok IP address, however, you can unblock your favorite sites and browse as normal.

A VPN routes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel. This data travels to a VPN server in your preferred location, such as Bangkok, Thailand. Once you get a Bangkok IP address via a VPN, you can browse Thai content freely without any geographic restrictions or bandwidth throttling. Additionally, the security and freedom provided by a VPN are extremely important in Thailand, a country where the internet is severely restricted.

Unfortunately, there are very few VPNs that actually offer servers in Bangkok. To save you some time, here’s a short summary of the best VPNs for Bangkok, all of which offer servers in Thailand (we also provide more in-depth reviews further on in this post).

How to use a VPN in Bangkok

While VPNs may sound a little complicated, they’re actually very straightforward to use. All you need to do is follow the step-by-step instructions provided below.

Here’s how you can use a VPN for Bangkok:

  1. First, sign up with a VPN provider that offers servers in Bangkok, Thailand. As our reviews show, we particularly recommend NordVPN.
  2. Next, you’ll need to download and then install the VPN app on the device (or devices) you’re using to browse and stream while in Bangkok.
  3. Log in to the VPN app before connecting to a server in your preferred location. For example, in Bangkok, Thailand, to browse local content or in the US to access Netflix.
  4. Once connected, you’ll have a new IP address. You can then browse anonymously in Bangkok and access geo-restricted content.
  5. If you’re still encountering geographic restrictions, try clearing your browser’s cookies or connecting to another server. Otherwise, contact your VPN’s support team for more help.

Best VPNs for Bangkok: FAQs

Why do I need a VPN in Bangkok?

According to a Freedom on the Net 2020 report by Freedom House, the internet is severely restricted in Thailand. In particular, there is extensive blocking of content that is deemed critical of the monarchy. Even the websites of some VPNs have been blocked. Aside from government-censored content, chances are you’ve come across region-locked websites. By using a VPN to change your IP address, you can access all of your favorite online content as normal, both in Thailand and while traveling abroad.

Internet users in Thailand have been arrested and prosecuted as a result of their online activities. Furthermore, the Thai government actively monitors the internet activity of users. A VPN encrypts your data so the government can’t read it. You’ll also have a new, temporary Thai IP address that isn’t tied to your physical location or identity, so you can browse or post anonymously.

ISPs in Thailand are required to retain logs which may be accessed by authorities. However, the VPNs listed don’t keep any logs by which you can be identified.

Can I use a free VPN in Bangkok?

We don’t advise the use of a free VPN in Bangkok (or, indeed, any other location). For starters, very few free VPNs actually offer servers in Thailand, never mind servers in the city of Bangkok. Generally speaking, free VPNs have only a limited number of servers available, many of which suffer from heavy user load. This leads to slow server speeds and performance issues such as lag while streaming.

Note also that some websites in Thailand are censored while others are region-locked. However, unlike the best VPNs for Thailand, free VPNs have a poor reputation for unblocking content. Consider also the security risks. Not all free VPNs encrypt your data and some even make money by logging and selling your browsing data. This is particularly risky in a country like Thailand, in which internet users face prosecution for exercising freedom of expression.
