- There are all kinds of websites and streaming services that aren’t usually accessible outside of Thailand.
- VPNs make it easy to regain access to your favorite Thai content, no matter where you are in the world. Plus, they improve your online privacy.
- I’ve tested dozens of popular providers to see which are the best VPNs for getting a Thailand IP address.
- NordVPN is my top choice for getting a Thai IP address. With high speeds, strong security, and excellent streaming ability, it’s ready for anything.
Traveling abroad is a great way to unwind, but it also means you’ll be unable to use Thai streaming platforms like Channel 7 or MCOT. Luckily, you can easily access Thailand-exclusive content from anywhere, securely log into your online banking service, or stay safe on public wifi with the help of a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
VPNs work by encrypting your device’s internet traffic and sending it through a server in another country (in this case, Thailand). This changes your IP address and makes it appear as if you’re browsing from within Thailand, regardless of where you really are. In this way, you can bypass geographic restrictions and access your favorite Thailand-only services like TNN, Thai PBS, or Channel 8 while traveling abroad.
I’ve done the hard part, researching and testing VPNs so you don’t have to. Below, I’ll reveal my top picks for obtaining a Thai IP address and what makes each so special.
Best VPNs for getting an IP address in Thailand:
- NordVPN The best VPN for a Thai IP address. Very large network, impressive speeds, and first-class security. Works with Netflix Thailand and local TV channels. Comes with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.
TIP In our testing we found that the cheapest NordVPN plan (Standard) works perfectly for Thailand IP. - Surfshark My top low-cost VPN for getting a Thailand IP address. This no-logs VPN works in high-censorship countries and has no connection limit.
- Total VPN This easy-to-use VPN boasts speedy, versatile servers in Thailand. Strong on security, with the ability to protect all of your most-used devices.
- ProtonVPN Puts your privacy first. Does a great job of unblocking Thai TV channels abroad. Customer support is available around the clock.
- ExpressVPN Great all-rounder with beginner-friendly apps and 24/7 support. Doesn’t keep any identifying logs and works great with Thai streaming sites.
- IPVanish A no-logs service delivering an impressive set of privacy tools, reliable Thai servers, and 24/7 support. Very easy to use.
- CyberGhost Offers plenty of servers in Thailand and a good variety of customizable security tools. One of the best for unblocking geo-locked sites.
- PrivateVPN Has a smaller network but a huge focus on privacy. Works well with services like Channel 7 and can even be relied upon in China.
- Hotspot Shield An easy-to-use service with solid speeds and reliable servers in Thailand. Capable of handling virtually any task.
Many VPNs claim to work with Thailand IP but most (especially free VPNs) are often blocked.
We regularly test the top 70 VPNs with all major streaming sites and this list only includes VPNs which reliably unblock Thailand IP and offer a full money-back guarantee, allowing you to try them risk-free.

How I identified the top VPNs for a Thai IP address
There are endless VPNs on the market, but they don’t all offer the same level of service, nor will they all be suitable for your needs. I narrowed down the field by trying each VPN for myself and carefully evaluating providers based on their performance in the five key areas below.
- Speed: It’s tricky to get accurate speed test results. That’s why I tried each VPN’s Thai servers in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon, using a 250 Mbps connection (the average household broadband speed in the US).
- Functionality: First, I considered how many countries each VPN had servers in. Then, I looked for split tunneling support, tested them against major streaming platforms and examined their connection limits.
- Security and privacy: I’ll never recommend VPNs that can’t keep you safe. At a bare minimum, we expect to see AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, leak protection, and a no-logs policy, with extra points for services that offer more.
- Ease of use: I tried to find VPNs that offer a seamless, streamlined user experience. They may, for instance, have servers designed for streaming, allow unlimited connections, or simply offer first-class customer support.
- Value for money: Finally, I make sure services are worth what they charge and hunt for ways to reduce the price as much as possible. Worth noting, every VPN in mylist must offer a money-back guarantee so you can try it risk-free.
You can find out more about my VPN testing methodology later in this article. For now, let’s take a closer look at the ones that made the grade.

NordVPN is the best VPN for getting a Thai IP address. It operates a stunning 9,000 servers in 130 countries (including Thailand) and works flawlessly with platforms like MCOT, Netflix, and Disney+. Its custom NordWhisper protocol makes it easy to browse freely in high-censorship countries and thanks to a 10-simultanous connection limit, the whole family can protect themselves online. if you need any help, there’s a 24/7 live chat service on NordVPN’s website.
I tested NordVPN’s Thai servers at various times of day to see what they were capable of. On a 250 Mbps connection, this service achieved an average speed of 190.81 Mbps, outpacing all of its rivals. In short, users can expect stellar performance when streaming, torrenting, or playing games. Better still, with just 7 Mbps of variance, there shouldn’t be any noticeable slowdown at peak times either.
NordVPN’s security toolkit is second to none. For starters, it has a zero-logs policy which has been backed up by multiple independent audits. User traffic is shielded with post-quantum encryption, DNS and IPV6 leak protection, a kill switch, and automatic ad and tracker-blocking. Additionally, NordVPN offers specialty servers for anyone who wants to access the dark web, encrypt their data twice, or beat country-wide censorship. Finally, it provides split tunneling support and automatic wifi protection so you don’t have to worry when using public networks.
NordVPN offers apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV. Browser extensions can be downloaded for Chrome and Firefox. This VPN can be used with compatible routers via manual setup.

Surfshark is the best way to get a Thailand IP address on a budget. It has plenty of servers in Bangkok and 4,500 in total spread throughout 100 countries. This is one of the providers that lets you connect as many devices as you like and if that’s not enough, support staff are ready to help at any time over live chat. I was impressed by Surfshark’s unblocking ability; it was great for watching Thai TV abroad and could even access tricky platforms like Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer.
It might be a low-cost VPN but Surfshark did extremely well on speed. After a full day of testing its Thai servers, it achieved an average speed of 186.19 Mbps — slower than NordVPN but just barely. Whether you’re hoping to watch TV from Thailand, download torrents, or play fast-paced online games, Surfshark will rise to the task.
Surfshark has a fantastic set of security features but it remains accessible to newcomers by having most of them enabled by default. This includes its ChaCha20 encryption, kill switch, and a combined tracker and ad-blocker. Surfshark has proven that it doesn’t keep logs with several external audits and actually has a NoBorders mode capable of beating China’s Great Firewall. It’s even possible to rotate your IP address periodically, making you effectively impossible to track.
This VPN has apps for MacOS, Linux, Windows, Android, Amazon Fire TV, and iOS. Manual installation is required for routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a low-cost VPN with fast Thai servers and no connection limits
- You’re seeking access to Thai content plus international platforms like Disney+
- You need IP rotation and NoBorders mode for bypassing censorship
- You want a VPN with reliable apps for Smart TVs and Fire TV
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want access to the complete feature set without paying extra

Total VPN operates a network of 1,800 servers spread across more than 80 countries, including Thailand. Users are permitted five simultaneous connections per account, and this service does a great job of sidestepping regional blocking, making it a strong choice for watching Thai TV abroad. In the unlikely event that anything goes wrong, you can contact support staff using Total VPN’s ticket system.
I tested Total VPN’s speeds at three points during, with its Thai servers delivering an average speed of 172 Mbps. Although its variability could be improved, this service provided exceptional performance and handled activities such as torrenting, gaming, and streaming Thai TV with no noticeable stuttering, lag, or buffering.
So how secure is this service? Well, it uses 256-bit AES encryption, which is currently considered uncrackable. This means that your ISP, public hotspot owners, and the government will be unable to see what you do online. There’s also a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a strict no-logs policy in place, as well as split tunneling support and an obfuscated protocol called Hydra.
Total VPN apps are available for Windows, Android, iOS, and MacOS. At present, there’s no support for Linux or routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want an affordable VPN with a high degree of versatility
- You want plenty of pre-configured settings to avoid manual effort
- Speed is one of your top priorities
- You like the idea of having an antivirus included
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need to protect more than five devices
- You need Linux support
FAST AND VERSATILE:Total VPN has some of the fastest Thai servers I’ve tested and works with all manner of tasks, from streaming to torrenting. It includes a 30-day money-back guarantee on one-year plans with a 14-day guarantee on shorter-term subscriptions.

ProtonVPN offers access to 18,000 servers in 130+ countries, with roughly a dozen virtual servers capable of getting you a Thai IP address. As such, you’ll be able to access platforms like TrueID, AIS PLAY, Line TV, WeTV, and iQIYI while evading government surveillance in Thailand. Users are permitted up to 10 simultaneous connections and there’s 24/7 support available via live chat. ProtonVPN might not work in China but that’s about the only shortcoming it has.
The real question is whether ProtonVPN is able to keep up with your requirements. In my testing, it did extremely well, achieving an average speed of 152.99 Mbps on a 250 Mbps connection. There was just 11 Mbps between its highest and lowest results too, meaning you should get top-tier performance even at peak times. Here’s a breakdown of ProtonVPN’s speeds across each test.
ProtonVPN was created by a reputable team in Switzerland, a country with strong consumer privacy laws. Accordingly, it doesn’t keep logs of user activities (and has proven this with multiple successive audits). Your data is kept safe using ChaCha20 encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection, plus automatic ad and tracker-blocking. ProtonVPN has a Stealth protocol capable of hiding the signs that you’re using a VPN, plus split tunneling and port forwarding functionality as standard.
ProtonVPN has its own apps for Linux, Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS. It can also be manually configured to work with most routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You prioritize privacy above all, with Swiss jurisdiction and a no-logs policy
- You want to access Thai streaming platforms like TrueID and WeTV
- You’re looking for a VPN that offers port forwarding support
- You want Tor integration for extra anonymity
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for a minimalist, user-friendly app
- You need the fastest speeds on this list
FULLY FEATURED:ProtonVPN is a reliable VPN packed with advanced features. It is perfect for torrenting or bypassing censorship in Thailand, and works with most major streaming platforms. Paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN is a remarkably novice-friendly provider with servers in 105 countries. It works perfectly well in countries where the internet is heavily-restricted, automatically obfuscating your data as needed. Streaming won’t be an issue either; I can confirm that this provider works with Hulu, ITVX, and Channel 7, to name but a few services. Customer support is available 24 hours per day, and users can now connect up to 10 devices simultaneously on the Basic plan.
This service is off to a good start! Now, let’s see how quick ExpressVPN’s servers in Thailand were. Using a 250 Mbps connection, this VPN averaged 135.34 Mbps with a variability of 8 Mbps. While it’s not the fastest, this is pretty consisntent and more than enough for day to day tasks like watching TV, making video calls, or gaming.
ExpressVPN keeps things simple but never compromises on privacy. By default, you are shielded with quantum-resistant ChaCha20 encryption, protection against DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leaks, a kill switch, and a tool that blocks ads, trackers, and malicious websites automatically. There’s a strict no-logging policy in place, though ExpressVPN also has a lengthy audit history and anonymous payment methods for the more anonymity-focused user.
This VPN has a tiered pricing system with Basic plans at $3.49/month, Advanced at $4.49/month, and Pro at $7.49/month. Apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge extensions are available plus there’s custom firmware for routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want reliable access to Thai streaming services with consistent speeds
- You need user-friendly apps that simplify access to Thai content
- You’d like a VPN that’s newcomer-friendly yet serious about privacy
- You want multi-platform support, including routers and Smart TVs
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want to fine-tune your connection or customize security settings
- You’re on a budget (ExpressVPN is one of the most expensive VPNs)
STRONG SECURITY:ExpressVPN keeps you safe at home and abroad. Delivers steady speeds, pre-configured security tools, and the ability to unblock Thai websites from anywhere. This logless VPN even offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

IPVanish has 3,200 servers spread throughout 100+ countries, with around half a dozen in Thailand itself. This provider has been revamping its apps lately, introducing extra security tools, optimizing connections, and enhancing its already-impressive streaming capabilities. Best of all, IPVanish lets users connect as many devices as they like and offers 24/7 support over live chat. Whether you’re looking to watch Thai TV abroad or just torrent securely, it’s a great option.
To get an accurate view of IPVanish’s performance, I tested its servers in Thailand three times. This provider did well, its average speed of 140.39 Mbps ensuring you can watch live TV without the slightest interruption. It was highly-consistent too, speeds varying by just 5 Mbps. Below, you can see all three speed test results.
IPVanish puts a lot of effort into protecting user privacy, and has a no-logs policy that’s been independently audited. User traffic is protected from DNS and IPv6 leaks and shielded from snoopers using unbreakable encryption. There’s also a kill switch, basic obfuscation (OpenVPN protocol only), automatic ad and tracker-blocking, and a feature that checks whether links are safe to open before you click them.
IPVanish apps can be navigated intuitively and are available for Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, and Amazon Fire Stick/ FireTV. This provider recently launched an Advanced subscription tier that includes the VPN, cloud storage, and a cloud-based browser within a browser.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a competitively priced plan without sacrificing speed
- You need a VPN with solid Thai server performance and unlimited devices
- You’d like to be able to see connection metrics as you browse
- You’re looking for strong torrenting support with optional obfuscation
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need a dedicated Linux app (Linux setup requires more manual effort)
- You need support for advanced protocols
SPEEDY SERVERS:IPVanish is a fast and secure provider with plenty of Thai servers. It’s easy to use, great for streaming, and able to protect every device you own. Not only that, annual plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost is a novice-friendly VPN that tries to simplify things as much as possible. It has reliable Thai servers and a network covering 100+ countries, plus its own Smart DNS service. Best of all, there’s no guesswork required since CyberGhost tells you which servers are best for streaming, torrenting, and playing online games. Live chat-based support is available 24 hours per day and each account permits up to seven simultaneous connections.
Of course, none of this matters if CyberGhost can’t keep up. I personally tested its Thai servers, evaluating them on both speed and consistency, and recorded an average speed of 132.52 on a 250 Mbps connection. It’s a competitive result and slowdown should be virtually unnoticeable during real-world activities like streaming Thai TV or downloading large files.
If security is your top priority, you’ll find a lot to like here. Aside from its uncrackable 256-bit encryption, CyberGhost offers a kill switch, protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks, an independently audited no-logs policy, and automatic ad and tracker-blocking. Users can also let certain apps pass through unencrypted or use the smart rules feature to tell the VPN to connect on its own in certain situations.
CyberGhost apps are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as on mobile for Android and iOS. There are also apps for Amazon Fire TV and Android TV, and browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Manual setup is required for routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You’re a beginner who prefers a simple, organized interface
- You appreciate a generous 45-day money-back guarantee
- You want a VPN with moderate and consistent speeds (132 Mbps)
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re a power user wanting advanced obfuscation tools
- You’re trying to use the VPN from highly restrictive environments

PrivateVPN might have a smaller network than its rivals (200 servers across 60+ countries), but it’s a great choice if your priority is remaining anonymous. Its Thai servers work flawlessly, even in high-censorship countries like China, and are able to unblock a wide range of geo-blocked platforms, from Amazon Prime Video to Disney+. You can secure up to 10 devices simultaneously and if you’re struggling with anything, customer support is available via a 24/7 live chat service.
This VPN has historically been a little slower than its rivals (no surprise given it manages its whole network in-house). After testing PrivateVPN’s Thai server, it returned an average speed of 53.03 Mbps with 6 Mbps of variance. While not the quickest VPN I’ve seen, it’s still suitable for high-bandwidth activities like gaming and watching Thai TV from abroad. Here are the full results:
PrivateVPN does a fantastic job of keeping you safe online. For starters, it lets you adjust the encryption level based on whether you need more speed or security. There’s also a kill switch that closes specific apps when your connection drops, protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks, and a Stealth mode capable of beating strict digital blocking in countries like China. PrivateVPN doesn’t keep any logs of your activities but I’d like to see it prove this with an independent audit.
PrivateVPN offers apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV. However, Linux and routers require manual configuration.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a VPN that works in highly restrictive countries
- You prefer a clean, minimal app interface that shows latency for Thai servers
- You want a VPN with a low monthly cost
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need consistently high speeds
- You require extensive server choice (just one single Thai location)
GREAT FOR STREAMING:PrivateVPN is perfect for watching Thai TV abroad. This inexpensive service is packed with security tools and works anywhere in the world. What’s more, all plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

| Security & privacy | 8.6 |
| Thailand speed testing | 1.9 |
| Value for money | 6.1 |
Editor's Note: Hotspot Shield is owned by Point Wild, Comparitech's parent company.
Hotspot Shield has more than 1,800 servers spread across 80+ countries, including Thailand. This VPN works well with most geo-blocked streaming platforms, too, so it’s a natural choice for anyone hoping to keep watching their favorite Thai TV shows while on vacation. Support staff are on hand 24 hours per day over live chat, and users can connect up to 10 devices at the same time.
This service usually ranks quite well where speed is concerned, but I specifically wanted to focus on how quick its Thai servers were. Following a full day of testing, Hotspot Shield achieved an average speed of 75.74 Mbps, meaning it’s fast enough for anything you throw at it including streaming, gaming, and torrenting.
Most of Hotspot Shield’s privacy features are enabled by default, making it ideal for anyone new to VPNs. This provider keeps you safe with unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks, plus an audited no-logs policy. There’s also a custom protocol called Hydra capable of hiding the fact you’re using a VPN in the first place. Finally, you can have this service connect on its own whenever you use an unsecured network.
Hotspot Shield has apps for iOS, Android, Windows, and MacOS. Unfortunately, this service no longer supports Linux systems or wireless routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want an easy to use VPN with a high level of versatility
- You’d like to be able to auto-connect when on public networks
- You’re looking for something quick, secure, and affordable
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need router or Linux support
- You’re using it within high-censorship environments
SECURE AND CAPABLE:Hotspot Shield makes it easy to secure your connection and access Thai content during a trip abroad. Better still, it doesn’t keep any logs of your activities and includes a generous 45-day money-back guarantee.

Using a free VPN to get an IP address for Thailand
Despite the marketing hype, it’s almost never worth using a free VPN. For starters, their performance leaves a lot to be desired because they usually only have a handful of servers and many times more users than the hardware can support. Further, you’ll usually only be given a limited amount of free bandwidth each month.
Free VPNs are often extremely barebones, lacking quality of life features like the ability to favorite servers as well as key security tools such as a kill switch. Because there’s so much traffic coming from a small pool of IP addresses, free VPNs are almost immediately blocked by most streaming services too.
They’re not even a reliable option for enhancing your privacy since malware loves to disguise itself as free VPN apps. Of course, given most free providers inject ads into the pages you visit (with shocking numbers refusing to encrypt user traffic at all), the best-possible result is significantly worse than you’d get from a reputable paid VPN.
Getting a Thai IP address: FAQs
Why do I need a VPN for Thailand?
A Thai VPN is necessary if you want to get a Thailand IP address when on holiday or living abroad. It allows you to access your favorite websites, services, and apps even if you’re in the USA or UK, for example.
While a VPN can help you access content in other countries, it can also help you unblock content that has been banned in your country. Internet users in Thailand may come across a green screen if a website or service is blocked in the country. Unfortunately, internet censorship is prevalent in Thailand, with Bangkok being one of the world’s most surveilled cities. While this was once largely focused on the blocking of pornographic websites, recent years have seen internet censorship in Thailand expand to political issues.
Are VPNs legal in Thailand?
VPNs are legal in Thailand though it’s worth noting that the Thai government has blocked a number of VPNs in an attempt to prevent residents from accessing blocked content.
Freedom House rated Thailand’s internet freedom as “not free” in 2024 with a score of 39/100. In 2017, the amended Computer-Related Crimes Act came into effect in Thailand, providing authorities with greater powers to block and remove online content. Under this amended act and the criminal code, internet users (particularly activists and journalists) are sometimes prosecuted in Thailand.
Disclaimer: Although Comparitech has spent hours researching this topic, nothing above should be taken as legal advice. Comparitech encourages you to consult local laws or perhaps even seek a professional’s opinion before attempting to use a VPN if you’re not completely sure that doing so is legal in your country.
Which websites are blocked in Thailand?
Unfortunately, there is no publicly available list of every website blocked by the Thai government. To make things more complicated, sites are constantly being added to and removed from the country’s blocklists.
Further, even if a site is available in Thailand, there’s a solid chance that the government is interfering, since it’s been known to abuse the takedown request feature on sites like Facebook.
Here is a quick list of material that has previously been blocked in Thailand:
- Any website that is critical of the monarchy or the monarch’s heirs
- Content deemed to pose a national security threat
- Gambling sites
- Websites discussing VPNs and digital privacy
- Adult content
- Change.org
- Telegram
- Wikipedia
- Foreign news sites
- Video-sharing sites such as YouTube
- Various forums and discussion boards
Can I get a Thai IP address without a VPN?
You can, but a VPN is still the most reliable option. Proxy servers can give you an IP address from Thailand, but they won’t encrypt your traffic.
You could also try using the Tor network and configuring Thailand as your preferred exit country. This isn’t guaranteed to work and, even if it does, the additional routing and encryption that are key to Tor’s operation will result in slow connection speeds.
A final option is to use a smart DNS service. While this won’t give you a Thai IP address, it will change your DNS settings so that some sites think you’re connecting from Thailand. Smart DNS isn’t guaranteed to work though, as some sites will still check your IP address (and most only unblock US streaming platforms).
