Kodi exodus alternatives

Having trouble finding the Exodus Kodi addon? As of May 2018, Exodus is broken beyond repair — the addon is no longer supported by its original creator or any other developers. As such, you’ll need a good, solid Exodus alternative. Thankfully, you’re in the right place!

Exodus was one of the most popular third-party addons, but it did not scrape its content from official sources. We have a long list of great TV and movie addons that will fill your TV needs.

In this article, we reveal the best official addons to rival the Kodi Exodus addon for several different content types. While Exodus and some of its counterparts (Gurzil, Covenant, Neptune Rising, etc.) are not addons we recommend, there are many official options that can provide a plethora of free streaming content on Kodi.

Kodi is open source software that makes setting up a home theater system easier than ever. It’s highly versatile and can be installed on a wide range of platforms including PC, Android,  iPhone, Roku, Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Shield, Amazon Fire TV and Firestick, and USB thumb drive.

Kodi is completely legal to use, but some third-party addons like Exodus have resulted in it being unfairly maligned in the media. We urge our readers to find official sources of content wherever possible and to research their country’s laws on streaming content before attempting to use Kodi for this purpose.

Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.

Important: Always use a VPN with Kodi

Although some Kodi users utilize virtual private networks (VPNs) to hide unofficial streaming from their internet service provider (ISP), there are many ways a law-abiding Kodi user could benefit from a VPN.

A VPN stops your ISP from throttling your network speeds based on your traffic history and cause Kodi buffering issues. Because all of your network traffic is encrypted, a VPN can also prevent most Man-in-the-Middle attacks and increase your system’s security.

While all VPNs will slow your internet speeds, some do so to the point that using the internet is difficult, while others might include malware or keep detailed logs of your browsing habits. For this reason it’s important to find a VPN provider that can be trusted to keep your data safe and anonymous.

We recommend IPVanish. It has minimal impact on your internet speeds, keeps no logs of your activities, and offers connections to servers in more than 50 countries. Also, it’s highly portable, capable of being installed on a wide range of devices including the Amazon Firestick.

READER DEAL: save  up to 60% on an IPVanish plans here. IPVanish offers a seven-day money back guarantee so it can be tried risk-free.

Why should Exodus be avoided?

The main reason Exodus should be avoided is that it streams content from unofficial sources. While individual providers can be disabled, Exodus doesn’t contain any legitimate sources at all and it’s impossible to add your own. This makes it a poor choice for Kodi users who want to watch properly licensed content.

Also, because Exodus is so popular, it has drawn the attention of copyright holders. In the past, the Motion Picture Association has claimed that Exodus and similar addons are at the forefront of a new wave of copyright infringement. This makes Kodi an easy scapegoat for organizations and could lead to tighter regulation on the software in future.

It’s also important to bear in mind that Exodus is a third-party addon. This means that it was unlikely to have been rigorously tested during development and likely contains more unpatched vulnerabilities than the official addons we recommend below.

Additionally, Exodus is no longer being supported by the developers so it will only become more vulnerable as time passes. In fact, Exodus’ most recent update came from an unsafe source.

In the past, Exodus has included code that turned Kodi users computers into a botnet. This code has since been removed, but it speaks to the mindset of the developers that it was ever included.

Best Exodus Alterntives

Although Exodus doesn’t use official sources there are many Kodi addons that do. These are less vulnerable to hijacking and often offer similarly sized content libraries. As a result, they can be used to replace the Exodus addon, show support to the content creators, and remove the risk of infringement notices from your ISP.

Best official alternatives for movies

PlayOn Browser

Playon Kodi addon

PlayOn is a service that allows you to connect accounts from multiple streaming services and display all of your available content in one place.

The PlayOn Browser addon is the easiest and safest way to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu content with Kodi since none of these providers have an official addon. A premium account is required to add these sources but at $2.50 a month it’s highly affordable.

The PlayOn Browser can be found in the official Kodi addon repository.

FilmRise – YouTube

FilmRise Kodi addon

The FilmRise – YouTube addon scrapes links from the YouTube channels of independent publisher FilmRise.

This addon contains thousands of movies, most of which are available in HD. Because there’s little in FilmRise’s media library that has seen commercial success, this addon is a great place to discover new movies or find titles that aren’t available anywhere else.

The FilmRise – YouTube addon is available from the official Kodi addon repository.

Official Crackle Kodi addon

Crackle is a video streaming platform owned by Sony. It offers better known movies than most other official addons and is completely free to use.

It should be noted that Crackle’s content is only available in the US, so overseas users will have to connect their VPN to an American server before they can watch anything.

The official Kodi repo’s Crackler addon no longer works, but this updated version, Crackle, can be found in the eracknaphobia repository. Learn how to install Crackle in our Crackle installation guide.

SnagFilms Kodi addon

Snagfilms is a streaming platform that collects independent films. These can be viewed through Kodi using the official Snagfilms addon.

Snagfilms offers more than 5000 titles to choose from, covering everything from sci-fi to politics. Its content is grouped by category and despite its lack of a search function, it’s usually fairly simple to find something interesting to watch.

The Snagfilms addon is available from the official Kodi addon repository.

Best official alternatives for on-demand TV shows

Viewster Kodi addon

Viewster is an online streaming platform that unlike many of its competitors, doesn’t regionlock its content. The official Viewster addon contains a strong selection of TV shows and anime, categorized by genre. What’s particularly impressive is that some of Viewster’s titles (including cult classic Sound of the Sky) aren’t available from any other official online source.

The Viewster addon is available from the official Kodi addon repository.

iPlayer WWW

The BBC makes its content available through its iPlayer streaming platform. The iPlayer WWW Kodi addon offers a regularly updated collection of British TV shows, although you will require a valid UK TV License to watch.

Episodes are added just a few hours after they air, but the iPlayer also allows you to watch live if you’d prefer. Also, the BBC regionlocks their content so foreign users will have to connect their VPN to a UK server.

The iPlayer WWW addon is available from the official Kodi addon repository.

ITV Kodi addon

The ITV Kodi addon is similar to iPlayer WWW. It provides access to ITV programming and live TV streams. Like the BBC, ITV regionlocks their content, so a British IP address is required.

There is no search functionality although titles are categorized by genre, then alphabetically, so it’s easy to find something to watch. The majority of this addon’s content is available in HD with some exceptions for older titles.

The ITV addon is available in the noobsandnerds repository. This repo contains many third-party addons, so we don’t advise installing any of the others.

Official Crunchyroll Kodi addon

Crunchyroll is an anime streaming platform and the official Crunchyroll addon allows you to connect your account and watch directly through Kodi.

This addon offers hundreds of different anime series with new episodes added the same day that they air in Japan. It’s worth noting that the vast majority of Crunchyroll’s titles are subtitled, so if you’re interested in dubbed anime you might be better served by the Funimation addon.

The Crunchyroll addon can be found in the official Kodi addon repository.

NBC Live Sports Extra

NBC Sports Live Extra Kodi addon

The NBC Sports Live Extra addon brings a wide selection of high-definition sporting content to Kodi.

Featured clips and highlights are free to watch, but for full games you’ll need an NBC Sports Gold subscription. NBC Sports can only be viewed in America, so if you’re overseas you’ll have to connect to an American server.

NBC Sports Live Extra can be found in the official Kodi addon repository.

Best official alternatives for live TV

Exodus doesn’t contain any live TV streams, but many similar addons do. The problem is that they use links to unofficial streaming sites that are often unreliable. However, there are several legitimate options available that offer a much higher quality of video.

Install FilmOn for Kodi

The FilmOn.TV Kodi addon offers links to more than 600 live TV channels from around the world. A free account allows users to watch in standard definition, but paid accounts are available that increase the quality of video and the number of channels on offer.

Streams are grouped by country of origin as well as genre, so it’s simple to find content from your home country without looking through several pages of foreign language results.

The FilmOn.TV addon can be found in the SuperRepo repository.

PS Vue

PS Vue Kodi addon

PS Vue is a service that is intended to replace your cable subscription. Plans start at $39.99 a month and include at least 50 channels including the Disney Channel, FX, and ESPN.

The PS Vue Kodi addon requires an account to use as it includes no free content. While there are PS Vue apps for various devices, the Kodi addon allows you to watch on an even greater range of devices, including Raspberry Pi, and offers greater control (zoom, contrast, 3D support) over the video itself.

The PS Vue addon is available from the official Kodi addon repository.

Exodus may seem appealing at first glance, but it has several problems that make it a poor choice for Kodi users looking to watch officially licensed content. This article has shown that there are several viable alternatives available. Better still, these addons have large content libraries while having fewer of the security vulnerabilities Exodus does.

Whatever you’re looking for, be it movies, TV shows, anime, sports, or live TV, there’s an official addon that would better suit your needs.
