uranus kodi addon

Are you curious about the Uranus Kodi addon? In this guide, we’ll be taking a closer look at the Uranus addon, its features, functionality, and content to help decide if it’s worth your time or not.

Kodi is extremely popular, open-source media center software. It’s highly customizable and offers exceptional cross-platform support, making it suitable for novice users and experts alike. Kodi can be installed on almost any popular device including iPhone, Roku, and Amazon Fire Stick. The majority of Kodi’s functionality is preserved on mobile platforms too, allowing for a consistent experience from one device to another.

Today we’ll be examining the Uranus Kodi addon. We’ll explain what it is, how it works and what kind of content it offers. Afterward, we’ll decide whether it’s suitable for most Kodi users to install.

This article highlights some of the potential risks that can come with using certain Kodi addons. Most third-party Kodi addon developers are well-intentioned and spend their own time and resources to build high-quality addons for the Kodi community. That said, even some of the most popular third-party addons have been misused by rogue developers in the past. It is worth being aware of these risks before installing any addon.

Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.

Important: Always use a VPN with Kodi

Some people connect to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in order to hide unlicensed streaming from their Internet Service Provider (ISP). However, VPNs have many legitimate uses and can benefit most people, even if they only stream from official sources.

VPNs work by encrypting your network traffic and routing it through a remote server. This means that it cannot be read by your ISP, network administrators, or anyone using a Man-in-the-Middle attack.

Every VPN is different though, and not all of them are suitable for HD streaming. Some are too slow to use, while others have insufficient privacy measures. Some VPN providers even keep logs of your activities that can be traced back to you. As such, choosing the right VPN provider is vital.

We recommend IPVanish. It’s a VPN with an extensive server network, fast speeds, and strong multi-platform support. IPVanish has dedicated apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire TV devices. There’s also a seven-day money back guarantee so you can try it risk-free.

BEST VPN FOR KODI:IPVanish is our top choice. Has a large uncongested network of servers and achieves good speeds. Strong security and privacy features make IPVanish a favorite for Kodi and Amazon Fire TV Stick users. Try it risk-free with the 7-day money back guarantee.

What is the Uranus Kodi addon?

uranus menu

Uranus is a fork of the now defunct Exodus Kodi addon. Like Exodus, Uranus scrapes links to content from streaming sites and delivers them straight to the user. The menu structure is almost identical, and fairly well organized. Uranus also offers Trakt integration, which allows you to keep a record of which titles you’ve watched.

This addon’s main problem is that it doesn’t use official sources. While specific providers can be turned off, there are no legitimate sources at all, making this a poor choice for those looking to stream legally.

There are some public domain titles available, though. We were able to find 1968’s Night of the Living Dead and 1938’s Algiers. Unfortunately, despite Uranus’ many playlists, none of them are solely devoted to this kind of content. This means that users will have to manually research which films are in the public domain and search for them individually.

Uranus could have been an excellent resource for finding old movies, but unfortunately, its primary focus is on unlicensed content. This is evidenced by the abundance of recently released movies in its “Spotlight” and “In Theaters” categories.

For the reasons above, we do not recommend Kodi users install the Uranus addon or use it for streaming.

Best Uranus alternative: Crackle

Part of Uranus’ appeal is that, like Exodus, it offers lots of high-quality movies. While it’s rare for an official addon to freely provide well-known, well-liked titles, that’s exactly what Crackle does. Better yet, some of Crackle’s content (such as The Social Network and the English dub of Sword Art Online) is difficult to find elsewhere for free.

Crackle’s library is separated into two folders: “Movies” and “TV”. Inside each, you’ll find an alphabetical list of every title available. These appear on a single page, so you can use Kodi’s search function if you’re looking for something specific.

Crackle is only available in the US, so you’ll have to connect to an American server if you’re trying to watch from abroad. Although the web version can suggest content based on the titles you watch, this feature isn’t available in the Kodi addon. This means you can watch Crackle without having to log in.

The Crackle Kodi addon can be found in the official Kodi addon repo, or in the eracknaphobia repository.

Additional alternatives to Uranus

Want to expand your library even further? The following addons offer a wide selection of films and TV shows to choose from.

Tubi TV

TubiTV Kodi addon

Tubi TV is a streaming service that boasts a content library of more than 40,000 movies and TV shows. It’s free to use, although the web player does show ads. This isn’t a problem when watching via the Kodi addon, however.

This addon might not have the latest releases, but many of them are from the last few years. Additionally, there are dedicated sections for older movies, cult classics, and cartoons, making TubiTV a strong choice no matter who’s watching. As a bonus, newer titles are almost always available in high-definition.

Tubi TV mostly offers lesser known titles, but there’s a good selection of recognisable content too, including The Inbetweeners, Battle for Los Angeles, and An Inconvenient Truth. And though the majority of its content is B movies and TV shows, over 600 titles in its content library are rated “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s important to note that Tubi TV’s content changes depending on where you access it from. For instance, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey is available in the US but not the UK. This geo-restriction can be bypassed by connecting to one of your VPN’s servers in a different location.

The Tubi TV addon can be found inside the BG repository.

Kodi Viewster information

If you’re looking for a well-rounded content library, look no further than Viewster. This addon separates its titles first by genre, and then by type (Movies or TV Shows). You can search for something specific, but as most of Viewster’s titles aren’t well known, it’s better suited to people looking to discover new content.

The thing that sets Viewster apart is its collection of free-to-watch anime. There are dozens of series from the past few years, including both seasons of Log Horizon and the critically acclaimed From the New World. These are subtitled, though, so if you want to watch dubbed anime, you might be better suited to the Funimation Kodi addon.

Viewster doesn’t region-lock its content and no login is required. This means that you can watch as much as you like, regardless of where you are in the world.

The Viewster addon can be found in the official Kodi addon repository.

PlayOn Browser

PlayOn browser Kodi addon

The PlayOn Browser is a little different from the other addons we’ve mentioned. It doesn’t actually include any content of its own. Rather, it allows you to login to various other streaming services and view all of their content in one place.

PlayOn’s free plan allows you to watch content from seven sources, but to add popular platforms like Netflix or Hulu, you’ll need to pay $2.50 per month. Like Uranus, the PlayOn Browser removes the need to install and sign into several different streaming services. The difference is that PlayOn is completely legal.

This also enables automatic ad-skipping and DVR functionality. Recording content requires a Windows PC, but the majority of the PlayOn Browser’s functionality is preserved in the Kodi addon.

The PlayOn Browser can be found in the official Kodi addon repository.

iPlayer WWW

iplayer www

The iPlayer offers a huge range of on-demand and live streaming British TV shows. Kodi users can access this content via the iPlayer WWW addon. All content is available in HD, although there are several video options that allow you to reduce the quality for slower internet connections.

This addon is excellent for families. While some of the BBC’s shows are intended for older viewers, you can turn on a child-friendly mode inside the addon’s settings. iPlayer WWW is extremely well-organized, with several different ways to find something to watch.

The iPlayer’s content is only available within the UK. Also, you need a valid UK TV License in order to watch. Despite this requirement, neither the addon or web player asks you to enter any details.

The iPlayer WWW add-on is available from the official Kodi add-on repository.

Improving your experience

Uranus might not use official sources, but there are plenty of excellent addons that do. Of course, finding the right addons is only the beginning; Kodi is vastly customizable and can do all sorts of things. We can show you how to automatically find subtitles, keep track of your watch history, and transfer Kodi builds from one device to another.
