Looking for a way to watch free movies online? The FilmCube Kodi addon might seem like a good place to find them. But is it legal? Is it even safe to install on your device? Read on to find out.
Kodi is a video media player that plays many different file formats, including WMV, AVI, and MPEG4. It can be installed on most popular TV devices, including Nvidia Shield, PC, and Android or iOS phone mirrored to Roku. It can be controlled with an RF remote or smartphone.
Although Kodi is popular for unlicensed video streaming, there are plenty of legitimate uses for the software.
Important: Always use a VPN with Kodi
When people use Kodi to access unlicensed streams, they generally use a VPN to hide their activities. However, VPNs have many legitimate uses for those who want privacy and and security while browsing and streaming online.
Customers who don’t use VPNs are often restricted by geographic content-blocking, victims of attacks by hackers, and have their Internet speeds throttled by ISPs. VPNs help to prevent these problems by encrypting your data and hiding your IP address.
However, not all VPNs are created equal. While any VPN will cause some slowdown in Internet speed, some slow down speed enough to cause video buffering. Other VPNs are complicated and frustrating to install because of a lack of native apps for devices like Nvidia Shield and Amazon Fire Stick. Still others will keep logs of your activity, creating new privacy and security problems to replace old ones.
For these reasons, we recommend that Kodi users employ IPVanish to protect their privacy and security. IPVanish is fast. Our testing revealed that it can stream HD video with no buffering. It has a native app for both the Nvidia Shield and Fire Stick, protects users against a number of hacking and spying attacks, and it keeps no logs of users’ activities.
Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocate the use of Kodi for piracy.
What is the FilmCube Kodi addon?
The FilmCube Kodi addon was developed by Dandy Media. It searches databases containing links to video streams throughout the Internet in order to find movies the user is looking for. Where other addons try to provide links to movies and TV shows, FilmCube is exclusively devoted to movies. In addition, FilmCube has a “search” function that allows the user to find movies faster. Because of these features and because of the large amount of content available using it, FilmCube has become a very popular Kodi addon.
Despite this popularity, the FilmCube Kodi addon is somewhat risky to install, for several reasons. First, Dandy Media is not an official Kodi addon developer or team. Although it sounds like a legitimate company, it’s actually an independent developer who releases addons anonymously. If you install FilmCube on your Kodi and have “automatic updates” enabled, Dandy Media could alter the code within the addon without you even knowing it. The code can also be altered by a third-party if the website it is held on is not secure. So even if the developer is trustworthy, the addon could still be unsafe. It’s worth noting that these are possible risks we are highlighting. Many unofficial Kodi developers are well intentioned and put a lot of effort in to building great addons for the Kodi community. Nevertheless it is worth being aware of these risks if you are considering installing an addon.
Second, almost all of the content provided by FilmCube is unauthorized by copyright-holders. For example, the addon currently provides streams of Jeepers Creepers III, The Nut Job II: Nutty by Nature, and Atomic Blonde, popular new movies that just left theaters. It is unlikely that the movie studios have agreed to this. Depending on what country these sites are streaming from, this may lead to them being shut down through legal means, causing the links to stop working and FilmCube to malfunction.
In fact, while Dandy Media did have a social media presence on Twitter, the account was recently closed. The shutdown was likely a response to a major third-party addon developer shakedown that occurred in November 2017.
Because of these problems, we do not recommend installing the FilmCube Kodi addon. We think the following alternatives provide better options.
