What is Kodi?

Kodi is an open-source media player designed to let you stream anything you want online, whenever you want. Just about anything can be found using Kodi: movies, TV shows, cartoons, documentaries, sporting events and more.

Kodi can be downloaded onto a Windows or Mac, Roku, Android or iOS smartphone, Amazon Fire Stick, or Apple TV.

It has often been portrayed in the media as just a means for people to download pirated movies and TV shows. It’s also often been thought of as posing security and privacy risks. However, not all content available for Kodi is pirated, and the security risks can be mitigated by using a VPN.

Important: Always use a VPN with Kodi

Most Kodi users who watch pirated streams employ a VPN to keep their activities secret from their ISPs. However, even a person who only streams from legitimate sources should consider using one.

VPNs can protect you from “man-in-the-middle” attacks where a hacker steals your personal information by sending your data through his/her own network. It prevents this by encrypting your data so that a hacker can’t read it. A VPN can also help to stop speed throttling by ISPs and bypass geographic content blocking employed by streaming services.

Most VPNs are not fast enough to stream video without buffering problems, and many don’t work on all devices. In addition, a lot of VPNs keep logs of users activities, leading to concerns that these networks may share users’ information with third-parties.

For these reasons, we recommend all Kodi users take advantage of IPVanish. IPVanish is fast enough to handle high definition video. It’s easy to install on any device, with one of the only native apps for Amazon Fire Stick. It also does not keep logs of your activity, so you can sleep safely at night knowing your private information will not get into the wrong hands.

Comparitech does not condone or encourage any violation of copyright restrictions, including illegal streaming through Kodi. Kodi can be used for many excellent, legal online streaming purposes. Please consider the law, victims, and risks of piracy before downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission.

What is MMA Streams for Kodi?

Similar in purpose to the Planet MMA addon, The MMA Streams Kodi addon searches the internet for websites that offer mixed martial arts events online. When it finds a source that has what the user is looking for, it plays the content. MMA Streams does not host any content itself. It just allows the user to stream from whatever source it finds.

MMA Streams has become very popular with MMA fans who don’t want to pay for cable TV service. It offers a wide variety of UFC fights and other MMA content.

However, there are some risks to using MMA Streams as well.

Most or possibly all of the sources that MMA Streams from provide fights without an agreement from the networks that are covering them. In other words, these are pirated streams. This means that the websites MMA Streams links to may be taken down at any minute. Inconsistent and unverified streaming can lead to broken links and frustration for you as a user.

In addition, MMA Streams uses sources with limited server security. To be fair, this is true of any streaming site to an extent. Even a legitimate service like UFC Fight Pass can be hacked. However, it is especially difficult to find a secure video source when the options available are constantly being shut down by authorities for breaking the law.

In addition to these concerns, it’s also difficult to find high-quality video on MMA Streams. Sometimes a match will cut out right in the middle of a fight. Other times, it will buffer for several minutes before resuming. Still other times, it will play at a low resolution, with grainy video and poor sound quality.

For these reasons, we do not recommend downloading and installing the MMA Streams Kodi addon. Instead, we recommend the alternatives listed below.

The best MMA Streams alternatives

The Kodi addons listed below all stream from official sources that are authorized by the copyright holders. Because of this, they have much higher picture and sound quality, few or no broken links, and limited buffering.

UFC Fight Pass

UFC Fight Pass Kodi addon

By far, the easiest way to legally get access to a lot of MMA fights on Kodi is to subscribe to UFC Fight Pass. For $9.99/month, UFC Fight Pass gives you access to a live event every Saturday night. That’s four live events for under $10. Considering that a single pay-per-view event goes for $60, that’s a pretty good deal.

UFC Fight Pass also gives you access to a massive library of MMA matches from the past, including fights from UFC, Pride, WEC, Strikeforce, and other MMA organizations. Once you get an account, you can watch all of the content from the site using the UFC Fight Pass Kodi addon.

This addon is located in the portse’s Addon Repository.

Playstation Vue

PS Vue Kodi addon

If you’ve watched everything on UFC Fight Pass and are still looking for more MMA matches, Playstation Vue can help. Playstation Vue is a for-pay IPTV service that is meant to replace cable TV packages. For $39.99, it gives you access to UFC Fight Night on FS1 and FX’s The Ultimate Fighter. The only thing missing from this package is Spike TV, which would allow you to watch Bellator MMA. However, Playstation Vue is still a good deal for some users since it has its own Kodi addon that doesn’t require PlayOn.

PlayOn with DirecTV Now

If you don’t like the channel lineup of Playstation Vue or if you really want to see Bellator, you may want to get DirecTV Now. DirecTV Now is another streaming video service designed to replace cable or satellite subscriptions. DirecTV Now offers FS1, FX, and Spike as part of a $35/month basic package. This allows you to see UFC Fight Night, Bellator, and The Ultimate Fighter.

The only problem with this option is that there is no stand-alone Kodi addon that allows you to watch DirecTV Now. Instead, you have to subscribe to a separate service called PlayOn and use the Playon Kodi addon to access your DirecTV Now channels. However, PlayOn allows you to legally record UFC matches you see on DirecTV Now and keep them forever, along with any other content you want to record from it. It also allows you to record from Netflix, Hulu, and many other streaming services as long as you have a subscription to them. It costs $30/year, the equivalent of $2.50/month.

The PlayOn Kodi addon is located in the official Kodi addon repository. The DirecTV Now menu is located within the addon itself. You can get an account with DirecTV Now here.

DEAL ALERT: Try Playon FREE for 7 days

FilmOn Simple

Want to get high-quality, legal MMA content without paying for it? That’s where FilmOn comes in. FilmOn is a completely free online television service with hundreds of channels. Importantly for MMA fans, it carries the GFL Combat Sports channel. On this channel, you can see the Combat USA Fighting Championships every year. FilmOn also has several MMA talk show channels like MMA Now and UFC Next.

FilmOn can be viewed through Kodi using the FilmOn Simple Kodi addon. It is located in the SuperRepo repository.

MMA Streams Kodi addon: Overview and privacy concerns

There’s no question that MMA Streams provides a lot of content for MMA fans. This has made it very popular. However, there are also a lot of risks to using MMA Streams.

MMA Streams has not gone through the same vetting process that official addons have. This makes it more likely that it could be used to infect a computer with malware.

To illustrate just how unsecure some third-party addons can be, consider the case of Exodus. Exodus was a popular Kodi addon used to see pirated movies, TV shows, and sporting events, including MMA matches. After the addon got popular, its creator developed enemies who threatened to release his true identity in order to allow authorities to find him. In retaliation, he secretly changed the code in Exodus to convert his users’ devices into DDoS botnets that would attack his enemies. The users did not know that this was happening, and simply thought they were being allowed to view movies and TV shows for free. Most of them did not want to be drawn into a feud between developers.

Luckily, the only adverse effect of this on users was that their computers were slowed down a bit. But the situation could have been much worse had the creator of the addon wanted it to be.

Given the security risks of using an addon like MMA Streams, there are better ways to access MMA fights using Kodi.
