What is Kodi?

Kodi is an an open-source software media player. In order to use Kodi, all you need is a device to run it. It works on Windows PCs and Macs, Nvidia Shields, Android or iOS smartphones, Apple TV boxes, Amazon Fire Sticks, even Roku boxes.

Kodi doesn’t host any content itself. It simply streams content from whatever source you point it to. This flexibility has made Kodi a powerful tool for cord-cutters who want to integrate their streaming services into one platform. However, it has also made Kodi controversial

because many use it to stream unlicensed content. Kodi’s open-source nature can lead to security and privacy risks as well.

Despite this controversy, there are many legitimate uses to Kodi, and the security risks can be minimized by taking the right precautions

Important: Always use a VPN with Kodi

Some Kodi users employ third-party addons to access sites that stream unofficial and unlicensed content. These users generally use a VPN to hide their activities. However, Kodi users who stream from only legitimate sites will find VPNs to be helpful as well.

Kodi addons are vulnerable to hacking because they are created by small, independent developers that may not be able to afford the security features a large company would have. This makes Kodi addons susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks where scammers discreetly monitor user activity and steal data. By encrypting your data, a VPN can greatly reduce the chances of this happening to you.

A VPN can also help prevent buffering caused by ISP speed throttling and can unlock geographic content blocks when traveling.

Unfortunately, many VPNs are too slow to handle high-definition video streaming. That’s why we recommend IPVanish for all Kodi users. IPVanish streamed 1080p video with no buffering in our tests. It keeps no logs of customers data, so users have peace of mind that their information will not get out to third parties. It has a native Amazon Fire Stick app that makes it easy to install. Overall, IPVanish is an excellent VPN for users who stream video.

Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocate the use of Kodi for privacy.

What is the Project Cypher Kodi addon?

Project Cypher is a Kodi addon created by Cypher Media. It allows you to watch live TV, movies, Legends Football League events, serial killer documentaries, live concerts, and many other types of content on your television for free.

Because of the wide variety of content it makes available, Project Cypher is a very popular Kodi addon.

However, there are some big risks to using Project Cypher to view this content. Project Cypher uses databases from sites like DirectD1, 1Movies, and DiziGold to find links to movies the user is searching for. These are databases known to be used primarily for finding pirated streams. Therefore, most or possibly all of the content that Project Cypher streams is unauthorized. In addition, there is no vetting process used by these databases to protect users from malware. Their links could lead to any computer in the world. They could lead to unsecure servers vulnerable to hacking or even to a malware creator’s own computer set up specifically to lure victims in with free movies.

Because of these reasons, we do not recommend installing or using the Project Cypher Kodi addon. Instead, we recommend using the alternatives listed below.

Project Cypher Kodi addon: Overview and Privacy Concerns

The Project Cypher Kodi addon offers a lot of content for Kodi users. However, the security and privacy risks of using it are significant. As just one example of what can happen to someone who streams pirated content using one of these addons, consider what happened with Exodus. For several years, Exodus was one of the most popular addons around. It was constantly being updated with new features and sources and attracting new users.

The creator of Exodus appeared on forums under the code-name “Lambda.” Because no one knew his identity, copyright holders were unable to file a lawsuit against him. However, he eventually developed enemies who threatened to publicly release his real name. In retaliation for this, he secretly added code to his addon, which was then automatically downloaded by most Kodi users that had it installed. This new code turned his users’ devices into botnets that engaged in DDoS attacks against his enemies. Most Kodi users had no idea this was happening.

Luckily, the new code did not actually harm users’ computers other than to slow them down a little. However, this example shows just how risky using infringing third-party addons can be.

Cypher Media is also not an entirely trustworthy addon developer. The developer often takes other popular addons and sticks his/her name on them. There’s no knowing what has been done to these addons.

Given these risks, Project Cypher Kodi addon is probably not the best way to watch TV or movies on Kodi.
