If you’ve been looking for a way to watch free movies on Kodi, you’ve probably heard of the Redemption Kodi addon. But with all this free content, you may wonder if Redemption is safe to install and legal to use. If so, read on to find out what Redemption is, what security and privacy risks you may be taking by installing it, and what the alternatives are if you choose not to use it.
What is Kodi?
Kodi is a free software media player from the Kodi Foundation. It allows users to integrate all of their media sources into one platform, eliminating the need for a web-browser or multiple proprietary apps in order to watch different channels. Kodi has become very popular among “cord-cutters” looking to escape expensive cable TV services and all of the arbitrary rules that come with it. Kodi can be installed on PC, Mac, Android or iOS mobile device, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, or Amazon Fire TV.
Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.

Always use a VPN when streaming video
Whenever you stream video from the Internet, whether through Kodi or any other software, you should always use a VPN to protect your privacy. Because it uses so much bandwidth, Internet service providers often frown upon users that stream video. If your ISP knows you are watching movies and TV online, it may throttle your speed, causing your videos to buffer. This can be extremely frustrating when you are trying to watch your favorite movies and shows.
A VPN helps to eliminate this problem by encrypting your data, preventing your ISP from knowing what you are doing. VPNs also help to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks by hackers. In addition, they allow you to watch online TV from sources in other countries.
Not all VPNs are good for streaming video. Most don’t have apps for popular TV devices like Nvidia Shield and Amazon Fire Stick. All VPNs will slow your speed a little, but many aren’t fast enough to handle HD video streams without buffering. In addition, some keep logs of users’ behavior. These logs could reveal private information if they fell into the wrong hands.
For these reasons, we at Comparitech recommend IPVanish for streaming-video users. In our testing, it streamed 1080p video without buffering. It has an app for both Nvidia Shield and Amazon Fire TV/Fire Stick. It has a clearly defined policy against keeping logs. Overall, IPVanish is a great way for Kodi users to protect their privacy.
What is Redemption Kodi addon?
The Redemption Kodi addon is a very popular addon that is focused almost exclusively on finding feature films. It offers few links to TV series. But for Kodi users that are most interested in movies, it offers a lot of content. Redemption houses no actual content itself. Instead, it searches through numerous websites that carry collections of links to videos. But is Redemption safe and legal?
Security and privacy risks with Redemption
The first thing users should understand about the Redemption Kodi addon is that most of the content it provides consists of unofficial, pirated streams. This is because the sources redemption uses do not have robust procedures for taking down unlicensed content. So if you are looking for legal streams of free movies, it will be difficult to find them with this addon.
In addition to this legal/ethical concern, there are security risks to installing Redemption. Redemption was created by a coder named “Echo Coder,” who used to be very popular within the Kodi community. However, Echo Coder deleted his twitter account and stopped developing addons after several Kodi developers were hit with cease and desist letters from copyright-holders. As a result, the Echo repo is no longer available, and no official copies of Redemption exist any longer.
Although there are still some copies of Redemption available on the Internet, there is no way of knowing if they have been tampered with, since there is no longer any official version available. This means that Redemption is especially risky to install.
Even if a version of Redemption could be found that was proven to be malware-free, the person housing the addon could install malicious code on it at a later date through Kodi’s “automatic update” function. On the other hand, if you install it and then never update it, the addon will eventually stop working as the links it contains go dead over time.
For these reasons, we at Comparitech do not recommend installing Redemption Kodi addon. Instead, we recommend using the comparatively safe and legal Kodi addons listed below.
