the walking dead on Kodi
Season 8 of The Walking Dead begins October 22, 2017, on AMC. If you want to watch The Walking Dead without cable, you have two legal online options: Sling TV and PlayStation Vue. Both are subscription TV streaming services limited to the United States. We’ll also look at how to watch The Walking Dead on Kodi and see if there are any good options available.

If you live in another country or are traveling outside the US, access to both of these services will be blocked. To get around this, you can use a VPN to “spoof” your location. A VPN encrypts all your internet traffic and sends it through an intermediary server in a location of your choosing–in this case, the US. We’ll get to the specifics on how to do this for each service further down.

Important note for Kodi users:

Kodi has some worrying privacy and security issues, these apply to those using Kodi legally as well as those using it illegally. A common concern for Kodi users include ISPs spying on how they use Kodi and what they stream, even if it is not pirated content. A VPN will stop your ISP or others snooping on your internet activity. A VPN can also guard against security issues such as Man in The Middle attacks which Kodi users are vulnerable to.

Most VPNs are too slow to use with Kodi. Others log your activity so don’t protect your privacy. We recommend IPVanish as it has speeds fast enough for streaming in HD or even UHD, keeps no logs of user activity, works with all popular devices and is the easiest VPN for Amazon Firestick users to install.

Finally, there are options available through the Kodi media player that you may be able to take advantage of. We caution against utilizing the Kodi option, however. Aside from one legal streaming method available here, most Kodi add-ons that offer up AMC streams are pirated and illegal.  Additionally, some Kodi add-ons can get hijacked by hackers, making your computer and private information vulnerable. A VPN will help secure your computer against many Kodi-related privacy issues. However, you should check your local laws and regulations before using, as laws can vary from country-to-country regarding streaming from pirated sources.

Comparitech does not condone or encourage any violation of copyright restrictions, including illegal streaming through Kodi. Kodi can be used for many excellent, legal online streaming purposes. Please consider the law, victims, and risks of piracy before downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission.

For Kodi, we suggest combining your streaming with a VPN. More on that below.

AMC’s The Walking Dead on Sling TV

Sling TV’s basic package starts out at $20 per month for 28 channels, which include AMC. You can live stream The Walking Dead as it plays on cable TV or watch it on-demand later. A one-week free trial is available for new subscribers.

Sling TV works on a ton of different devices and operating systems, including Windows PC, Mac OSX, iOS, Apple TV, game consoles, and Android. That includes Android-based streaming devices like Chromecast, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV.

If you’re watching from abroad, the easiest way to watch is from a web browser like Chrome or Firefox. Just install your VPN, connect to a location in the US, and log into your account as usual. We recommend ExpressVPN, as it’s one of the easiest and most reliable VPN providers available. You can get 3 months extra free here with ExpressVPN 12 month plans. Kodi users may prefer IPVanish as it offer similar benefits but is easier to install on an Amazon Firestick, a popular device with Kodi fans.

For those outside of the US hoping to create an account, bad news: Sling TV does not offer access to non-US residents at this time.

If you’re watching from a device that doesn’t support VPNs, things get a bit more complicated. You’ll have to configure the VPN on your wireless router or create a virtual router on a laptop. The exact process varies depending on your router firmware. You can learn how to set up a virtual router on a Windows laptop or MacBook here.

AMC’s The Walking Dead on PlayStation Vue

A basic PlayStation Vue subscription starts out at $39.99 per month for 60+ channels, including AMC. You can watch The Walking Dead live online as it airs on TV, or use the built-in cloud-based DVR to save it for later.

PlayStation Vue is no longer limited to just the PS3 and PS4. You can also watch on Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, any Android or iOS device, and even your web browser. PlayStation Vue Mobile is also available on iOS and Android devices, but you’ll need an activated, TV-connected device to use it. Several channels on mobile are also restricted depending on licensing rights and your location.

Due to Sony witchcraft that requires you always log into PlayStation Vue from your home wifi network in the US, we can’t guarantee this will work for users abroad even with a VPN. It’s difficult to even watch from outside your home, much less your country. For that reason, we recommend Sling TV as a better (and cheaper) option for TWD fans in other countries.

How to stream The Walking Dead on Kodi

If neither of these options is available to you–possibly because you don’t have a US billing address or credit card–then you can opt for some streaming methods through Kodi. There is at least one legitimate, legal option for watching AMC through Kodi, while most others utilize pirated streams.

We do not encourage or recommend the usage of pirated streaming third-party add-ons. We recommend you opt for the legal options. Laws can vary in different countries, so viewing pirated streams may be legal where you are. However, we do not condone the use of these pirated streams and warn most users against their use.

Best method through Kodi: USTV Now

The USTV Now service is mostly designed for US military who are overseas and lack a permanent U.S. address. However, the service does not have any blocks against non-US individuals signing up either, leaving it available as a perfectly viable option for anyone outside the US, whether you’re a citizen or not.

USTV Now offers a free service with 7 over-the-air channels. However, you can pay $19.00 a month for just under 30 channels, which thankfully does include AMC.

When making an account with USTV Now, it’s important to avoid signing up using the Facebook or Gmail quick sign-up links. While this may be convenient, it will also prevent you from actually being able to stream USTV Now through the Kodi add-on available for this service. This is because the quick sign-up links connect to your accounts, and don’t provide with a password, which you’ll need when using the USTV Now Kodi add-on

USTV Now and other streaming add-ons don’t come pre-installed on Kodi. You’ll have to install a repo, then install an add-on from that repo to start watching streams. Both live streaming and on-demand streams are available. Check out our list of the best Kodi add-ons for streaming TV and movies here. Additional option: PS Vue Kodi add-on

If you decide to go with PlayStation Vue, you’ll be in luck. Not only can you run PlayStation Vue through a large number of devices, you can also connect to your account through a Kodi add-on.

You can find the PS Vue add-on listed in the Official Kodi Add-on Repository. In order to access your account through here, you will need to add your credentials before trying to load the add-on. If you load the add-on without your credentials inputted, the add-on will crash.

After downloading and installing the add-on, find it in your Add-ons section, then right-click on it. Click on Settings, and then enter your username and password.
