Getting HGTV on Kodi is not just possible, but very easy. You can install both HGTV and HGTV Canada Kodi addons easily through your Kodi 17 or Kodi 18 media player installations. However, there’s more to it than that, so we’ll provide some detailed information regarding streaming content through both HGTV addons.
What is Kodi?
Kodi is a revolutionary piece of software for video streaming. It allows users to integrate all of their media sources into one platform, making it easy to watch online TV and movies. Kodi can be downloaded for free from the Kodi Foundation and installed on Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, Amazon Fire Stick, PC, Mac, or Android or iOS mobile device.

Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.
Always use a VPN with Kodi
Whenever you use Kodi to stream TV or movies, you should always use a VPN to protect your privacy. Some video streaming services will block you from viewing content if you are located outside of a particular country. If you use a VPN, it allows you to have an IP address from virtually any country you choose. This prevents streaming sites from knowing where you are physically located, giving you more options for content to watch.
A VPN also prevents your ISP from knowing that you are streaming video. This helps prevent buffering caused by ISP speed throttling. In addition, a VPN can help protect you against man-in-the-middle attacks by hackers.
Not all VPNs are good for streaming video. Some have servers in only a few countries, which limits the programming available to viewers. Others are too slow to stream HD video without buffering. Many invade users’ privacy by keeping logs of their activities. Most do not have apps for popular streaming devices like the Amazon Fire Stick and Nvidia Shield.
For these reasons, we recommend IPVanish to Kodi users. In our testing, we found that it streamed 1080p video without buffering. IPVanish has servers in 60+ countries. It keeps no logs, and it has a native app for both Amazon Fire Stick and Nvidia Shield.
How to install and use the HGTV Kodi addon
The HGTV U.S. website provides a robust catalog of free content for HGTV fans, including full episodes of Fixer Upper, Flip or Flop Nashville, Property Brothers, Flipping Virgins, House Hunters, and 12 other popular HGTV shows.
The HGTV Kodi addon allows you to connect to this website through your Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, smartphone, PC, or other device, without needing a web browser. Here is how to install the HGTV Kodi addon:
- From Kodi’s main menu, select addons
- Click download
- Choose video addons
- Select HGTV. This will bring up the information screen for the addon
- Click install. The addon will install within a few seconds
Once you have the HGTV addon installed, click to open its main menu. You will see a list of 17 shows, along with an option to view “featured full episodes.” “Fixer Upper Fan Favorites” is listed twice, and each of these two options provides different episodes.
Click on a particular show for a list of episodes of that show. Click the episode you want to see, kick back, and enjoy watching your HGTV show. That’s all there is to installing and using the HGTV Kodi addon.
Note that the HGTV Canada website provides different content than the U.S. version and requires a different Kodi addon to view its content. More on that below.
HGTV Canada Kodi addon doesn’t work
While the U.S. HGTV website provides a lot of content, it pales in comparison to HGTV Canada. The Canadian version carries 46 shows, including Bryan Inc., Holmes Makes it Right, Disaster Decks, Flip or Flop Fort Worth, and many other shows not available on the U.S. website.
Because of this larger catalog, many Kodi users would like to find a Kodi addon that works with HGTV Canada. Unfortunately, though, the HGTV Canada Kodi addon available in the official Kodi repo produces “HGTV Canada error” messages, and none of the videos will play.
On the official Kodi.tv forums, the developer stated on March 27 that he currently does not know of a way to fix the HGTV Canada addon, since “the manifest that’s used isn’t currently supported.”
The bottom line is that the HGTV Canada addon currently does not work, and we do not know when it will work again or if a new one will be developed. For readers that want to watch HGTV Canada shows not available on the U.S. website, we currently recommend using a web browser instead of Kodi.
Keep in mind that if you are located outside of Canada, a VPN will be required to get around HGTV Canada’s geoblocks.

Other Kodi addons that can be used to watch HGTV
While the previous Kodi addons attempt to let you watch legally free content, there may still be some HGTV shows you want to see that require a subscription. If so, here are two Kodi addons you can use to watch them.
If you’re a U.S. resident, you can get a subscription to the HGTV channel from PS Vue as part of a broader package that costs $39.99/month. The PS Vue Kodi addon can then be used to watch HGTV on your TV device.
PS Vue also allows you to add your favorite HGTV shows to a “favorite shows” list to be recorded and kept in the cloud. These shows can be accessed from the Kodi addon anytime you want to see them.
If you want to try out PS Vue to see if you like it, you can get a 7-day free trial from the official website.
The PS Vue Kodi addon is in the official Kodi repository. To install, load Kodi and click addons → download → video addons → PS Vue → install.

DIRECTV NOW and Playon
Another option for U.S. residents is DIRECTV NOW. It offers a subscription to HGTV as part of its basic package that costs $35/month. It also offers a free trial for seven days on its official website.
Unfortunately, there is no dedicated DIRECTV NOW Kodi addon. However, you can still watch DIRECTV NOW through Kodi using the Playon Kodi addon. This costs an additional $30/year for a subscription to Playon, but it gives you the added benefit of being able to legally record HGTV shows and keep them on your device forever. These recordings can even be kept if you later unsubscribe from DIRECTV NOW and Playon.
