How to watch Ligue 1 live online (1)

The 2019/20 Ligue 1 season begins on August 9, with AS Monaco vs. Olympique Lyonnais at 7:45 PM BST (6:45 AM PST/ 9:45 AM EST). It’ll run until May 23rd, 2020, and during this time, each team will play 38 matches. You don’t need a season ticket to catch all of the action, though: read on below to find out how you can stream every game from the comfort of your own home.

It’s important to note that we’ll only be recommending official sources to live stream Ligue 1. Although unlicensed streams are rife online, you should know that these are often low-quality, unreliable, and prone to being taken offline during matches. With so many legitimate ways to watch, there’s nothing to be gained by using unofficial Ligue 1 streams.

Ligue 1 games will only be shown on geo-blocked streaming services, which means you’ll need a VPN to watch from abroad.

How to stream Ligue 1 with a VPN

New to VPNs? Not sure where to start? Just follow the steps below and you’ll be streaming Ligue 1 matches in no time:

  1. Choose a VPN designed for HD streaming. We mentioned ExpressVPN earlier, but NordVPN and CyberGhost are two high-performance, low-cost alternatives.
  2. Download and install the VPN software. There will be a few different versions, so be sure to get the right one for your operating system.
  3. Decide which of the sources below you’d like to use, then sign up. Note that you might need a payment method linked to an address in the required country.
  4. Connect to one of your VPN’s servers in the appropriate location. For instance, you’d use a British server for BT Sport, or a French one for Canal+.
  5. Try to watch a video on your chosen site. If you’re still getting errors, you might have to reload the page first. Afterward, content should play as normal.

Where to watch Ligue 1 matches live online

France has some of the best soccer teams in the world, so understandably, there are a lot of fans in other countries. Luckily, live Ligue 1 coverage is being broadcast all over the world. Take a look at the list below to find the official broadcasters in your country.

British flag - union jack

British viewers can stream Ligue 1 fixtures live and on-demand with BT Sport. This service allows users to watch either via the website or the BT Sport mobile app. Unfortunately, this service isn’t available on its own: you’ll need either a BT, Sky, or TalkTalk TV subscription before you can start streaming.

The price fluctuates wildly based on your current TV and broadband supplier. If you’re with BT, you can watch BT Sport online for £6 a month, but if you’re with Sky or TalkTalk, the price could be as high as £29.99 a month. It’s a bit unfair, but as BT has exclusive Ligue 1 broadcast rights in the UK, there’s isn’t much you can do about it.

To access BT Sport while traveling outside of the UK, you can simply connect to a UK VPN server.

USA flag

There’s just one Ligue 1 broadcaster in the US: beIN Sports. This company is known for its exceptional multi-language sports coverage, and the Ligue 1 is no exception. beIN Sports will show every Ligue 1 fixture in both English and Spanish in the US and Puerto Rico.

As yet, there’s no way to register exclusively to beIN Sports: if your cable package already includes beIN Sports, you can watch matches online at no extra cost. If it doesn’t, you’ll have to log in with your PlayStation Vue, fubo TV, or Sling TV subscription.

In France, the majority of Ligue 1 fixtures will be split between Canal Sports and beIN Sports. Canal Sports costs €19.90 per month, with a one-month free trial, and beIN Sports starts at €14 per month, although we’d recommend choosing the €15 plan instead to avoid being locked into a 12-month contract.

If you want to access games while you’re abroad, you can use a VPN to spoof your location and get a French IP address.

In Mexico, Ligue 1 broadcasting rights are owned exclusively by ESPN. This network will be showing Ligue 1 fixtures online and across its ESPN Play, ESPN 2, ESPN 3, and ESPN Internacional channels. If these are included in your cable TV package, you can sign into the ESPN website and start streaming immediately at no added cost.

ESPN is region-locked and only showing these matches in Mexico. As such, you’ll need a VPN if you’re looking to stream Ligue 1 games abroad.

DAZN has managed to snap up Ligue 1 broadcast rights in Germany. Soccer fans can tune in using either the web player or DAZN app for iOS or Android devices. DAZN usually costs €10 a month, but there’s a one-month free trial, meaning you can try the service out and cancel if you’re not satisfied.

This platform has particularly strict geo-blocking and as a result, most VPNs will not be able to unblock it from outside of Germany.

Can I watch Ligue 1 soccer with a free VPN?

Free VPNs can seem tempting at first glance, but we advise against using them for several reasons. First and foremost, they don’t provide the same quality of connection. With limited server networks and a never-ending influx of users, you’ll find that free VPNs struggle to load live HD video smoothly. With data caps and queues, this process only becomes more frustrating for the user.

Free VPNs pose a threat to your hardware and personal information. In 2016, one study showed that dozens of free VPN apps for Android actually attempted to install malware onto their users’ devices. Even if you use a well-established free VPN, there are no guarantees; we’ve seen a high-profile free VPNs sell their users’ bandwidth for use in a botnet before. To protect yourself and your personal information, we recommend using a trusted VPN with a privacy policy that puts its users first.
