Features

You’ll be able to use CyberGhost and VyprVPN on desktop and mobile thanks to the apps for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. Both VPNs also provide apps for use with Amazon Fire TV and Android TV. One difference is that CyberGhost also has a CLI app for Linux whereas VyprVPN only provides instructions for manual configuration.

With both VPNs, you’ll be able to connect multiple devices at the same time. CyberGhost edges this particular contest. With it, you can have up to seven simultaneous connections. VyprVPN allows up to five which is about average for a paid VPN. Furthermore, CyberGhost also has Chrome and Firefox browser extensions, providing you with an easy way to change your location without even having to open the main app.

When it comes to installing CyberGhost or VyprVPN on your router, things get slightly more difficult. This is because manual configuration is required. However, these two VPNs provide setup guides to make this process easier. Split tunneling is another feature that you’ll find in both CyberGhost and VyprVPN. This allows you to choose which websites or apps won’t have their data routed through the VPN even when it’s connected.

You may also be interested to know that CyberGhost includes various additional features. This includes the option to block ads, trackers, and malware via the desktop apps. Access to streaming services

There’s little to separate CyberGhost and VyprVPN when it comes to accessing the major streaming platforms. However, you may find CyberGhost the better option for bypassing geographic restrictions due to its significantly larger network of servers. Both VPNs work with popular streaming services including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and more.

While both VPNs provide good speeds for streaming without lag or buffering, CyberGhost is the quicker of the two. The two VPNs also provide unlimited bandwidth for uninterrupted browsing, streaming, and torrenting. While CyberGhost and VyprVPN allow torrenting, VyprVPN has discouraged it in the past. Fortunately, this has changed in recent years.

Overall, CyberGhost has a larger network of servers and is faster – it came fourth in our most recent speed tests. Furthermore, you can use its desktop and mobile apps to search for servers that are optimized for specific streaming services. However, you shouldn’t have too many issues streaming or access with either of these VPNs.

CyberGhost vs VyprVPN in China

In general, you may struggle to find a VPN that works reliably in China. The country has a high level of censorship, and its government requires VPNs to agree to extensive data logging before they are approved. Furthermore, the Great Firewall of China blocks the websites of many VPNs. It uses various techniques, which include IP address blacklists, keyword filtering, and packet inspection.

We used our “Blocked in China” tool to check the websites of CyberGhost and VyprVPN and can confirm that both are blocked in China. As such, you cannot go to these websites, sign up, and download the apps if you’re already in China. However, you may be able to do so before arriving in China. Unfortunately, CyberGhost doesn’t work in China but does provide manual configuration guides in case you’d like to try anyway.

The good news is that VyprVPN does still work in China, making it the better option. Its Chameleon protocol disguises VPN traffic as normal traffic, allowing it to pass deep packet inspection. Just remember that you’ll need to have VyprVPN set up in advance of traveling to China in order for it to work.

Setup and interface

It may be that this is your first time using a VPN. Whether this is the case or not, you’ll likely appreciate how easy CyberGhost and VyprVPN are to use. Setup couldn’t be simpler thanks to the automatic setup wizard, plus a wide variety of desktop and mobile apps.

You’ll find that the CyberGhost and VyprVPN apps are very similar in that both have a simple, clutter-free interface. This consists of an on/off button and the option to select a server from a drop-down list. In both cases, the desktop and mobile apps allow you to see more in-depth server information (current load, for instance) and access your settings with just one click.

These two VPNs list servers by country and city. However, there are some differences. In particular, CyberGhost allows you to search for servers that are optimized for streaming and torrenting. You’ll be able to see exactly how far each server is from your physical location too, which makes it easy to get a fast, low-latency connection. Another difference is that VyprVPN lets you filter by server speed.

The extra settings pages of CyberGhost and VyprVPN are more extensive on desktop than mobile. Some of the adjustable options with CyberGhost include the option to block ads, compress data, and auto-connect on startup. With VyprVPN, you’ll find a kill switch as well as a malware-blocker (CyberGhost has a kill switch too, but it’s always on, so there’s no option for it). Both VPNs provide a feature that automatically connects when you use a public wi-fi network, protecting you from any potential threats.

Servers and performance

One of the biggest differences between CyberGhost and VyprVPN is the server networks. With over 10,000 servers in 100+ countries worldwide, CyberGhost is one of the biggest VPNs on the market. In contrast, VyprVPN has around 700 servers in 64 countries. The more servers there are available, the less loaded each individual server is likely to be. Larger networks typically give you more options for alternative content libraries while streaming.

CyberGhost is a better bet if you’re looking for a server in a less commonly used location such as Bangladesh or Georgia. However, both VPNs provide plenty of options in the most requested countries such as the United States. For example, VyprVPN has servers in eight US cities including Los Angeles and New York City. CyberGhost has over 1,300 servers across 11 cities in the US. This makes it a good option for accessing Netflix US, for example.

CyberGhost vs VyprVPN Security

Both CyberGhost and VyprVPN support some of the most common VPN protocols including OpenVPN, L2TP, and IKEv2. However, the key difference is that VyprVPN supports more protocols including PPTP as well as its proprietary VPN protocol, Chameleon. This uses the OpenVPN protocol but scrambles metadata to evade deep packet inspection. As such, it’s particularly useful for bypassing government censorship in places like China.

One similarity is that CyberGhost and VyprVPN both secure your internet traffic with 256-bit AES encryption. While CyberGhost has an automatic kill switch on its desktop and mobile apps, a kill switch is only available via VyprVPN’s desktop apps. The kill switch essentially cuts your internet traffic should the VPN connection drop, preventing you from accidentally browsing unprotected. CyberGhost protects against DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks although VyprVPN only protects against DNS leaks.

Another security feature offered by both CyberGhost and VyprVPN is automatic wi-fi protection. This means that if you connect to a wi-fi network, the VPN will automatically switch on to protect your data. One final similarity is that the two services use private DNS servers by default although there is the option to switch to a third party DNS should you wish. Overall, there’s little to separate between the two VPNs when it comes to security.

Privacy

The good news for your privacy is that both CyberGhost and VyprVPN are headquartered in countries outside of the 14 Eyes intelligence alliance. In particular, CyberGhost is headquartered in Romania where there are no mandatory data retention laws. VyprVPN is based out of Switzerland, a country with strong privacy laws. As such, you don’t need to worry about their governments requesting user data.

Even if data were to be requested, these two VPNs shouldn’t have anything to provide. That’s because they both operate strict no-logs policies. However, it’s worth noting that CyberGhost does keep some non-identifiable connection logs. Fortunately, these logs are deleted at the end of every month. In contrast, VyprVPN doesn’t keep any logs whatsoever. Both providers have had their no-logs policies independently verified by third-party auditors.

Signing up with CyberGhost only requires that you enter an email address. With VyprVPN, you’ll need to enter your name and email address. One of the privacy-oriented differences is that CyberGhost accepts Bitcoin while VyprVPN doesn’t accept any anonymous payment options. In theory, you can sign up anonymously with CyberGhost by using a burner email address and by choosing to pay in Bitcoin.

Configuration

CyberGhost and VyprVPN are like most VPNs in that they use shared address allocation. This means that when you connect to one of their servers, you’ll be assigned the same IP address as other users on the server. As all user activity is mixed, it becomes nearly impossible to link specific activity to a single person or device. Needless to say, this adds a layer of anonymity to your browsing experience.

With CyberGhost, you have the option to get a dedicated IP address (also known as a static IP address). However, it’s worth knowing that this costs an additional $5 (USD) per month. One of the main reasons to have a dedicated IP address is that you don’t have to worry about other people using it and getting it blacklisted. Unfortunately, it’s only possible to get a static IP address with VyprVPN via VyprVPN Cloud, a solution for business customers.

While there’s no outright DDoS protection with either VPN, using a VPN ensures that you yourself are not targeted. Indeed, should a DDoS attack take place, only the VPN servers will be affected. As a result, you’re protected from this and can simply switch servers if necessary. CyberGhost and VyprVPN both have a NAT firewall, preventing unrequested or suspicious traffic from entering.

Customer Service

When it comes to customer service, you’ll find that CyberGhost and VyprVPN both have 24/7 support via live chat as well as email. Clearly you’ll receive the quickest possible response when you use the live chat feature. However, if you aren’t in a hurry, you can open a ticket.

We tested the response time of each VPN by sending them three questions. The questions were of varying difficulty and were sent at different times of the day. Both VPNs are quick to respond. In the case of CyberGhost, we had to wait an average of six hours for replies to our emails. However, VyprVPN was even faster at just three hours on average. In both cases, answers were relevant to the questions asked and didn’t require further enquiry on our part.

CyberGhost and VyprVPN are two of the better VPNs on the market. Each provides plenty of benefits for unblocking geo-restricted content, browsing and streaming, and protecting your privacy. Despite this, our research and testing of the two services tells us that CyberGhost is the overall winner.

If you’re looking to access region-locked websites and services, CyberGhost is your best bet due to its huge network of servers. However, both VPNs are very reliable with popular streaming services, be it Netflix US or BBC iPlayer. Overall, CyberGhost is the faster of the two which may prove important if you plan on using your VPN to stream or torrent.

We found that CyberGhost offered more flexibility in terms of its features. In particular, it lets you connect up to seven devices simultaneously while VyprVPN allows a maximum of five. In addition, CyberGhost provides browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox as well as lots of other extra features such as an ad-blocker and private browser.

Security-wise, it was a close race with both VPNs using 256-bit AES encryption. Both providers have also undertaken independent audits to verify their no-logs claims.
