Sportsworld Kodi addon

Kodi is free, open source software that allows you to easily set up your own home theater system. One of Kodi’s biggest attractions is its portability: it can be installed across a huge range of different devices including PC (Windows, Mac, and Linux), Android, iPhones, Raspberry Pi, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Firestick, and USB flash drives. Better still, there’s no disparity between desktop and mobile platforms; if something works on a PC, it’ll most likely work on a cell phone or tablet too.

Kodi provides two ways to access content. Firstly, you can import audio or video files that are stored on your device. This is convenient since they can be watched without an internet connection, but isn’t ideal for mobile devices as they have limited storage space. Kodi users can also install plugins called addons. These addons gather libraries of content that are hosted online and usually have a relatively small installation size. They do, however, require an internet connection to work.

In this article, we’ll be discussing a third-party Kodi addon named Sports World. It provides access to live streams of various sports-focused TV channels. We’ll be exploring the legality and functionality of Sports World, and describing some of the privacy concerns that all official and third-party Kodi addons share.

Kodi has seen a lot of negative media attention in recent months, even though it’s completely legal to use. Much of this attention stems from the fact that some third-party addons have been providing unrestricted access to licensed content. This may or may not be legal to watch, depending on which country you live in. To minimize the risk of getting into legal trouble, we highly recommend Kodi users research the laws on streaming content online before attempting to use Kodi for this purpose.

Comparitech does not condone or encourage any violation of copyright restrictions, including illegal streaming through Kodi. Kodi can be used for many excellent, legal online streaming purposes. Please consider the law, victims, and risks of piracy before downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission. Always do you own research before accessing any Kodi addon, stream or repository.

Important: Always use a VPN with Kodi

VPNs are often used with Kodi to hide individuals identity and activities from ISPs. However, there are many legitimate reasons to use a VPN with Kodi.

VPNs guard your privacy by preventing your ISP from snooping on your online activity or slowing down your connection and buffering Kodi so that it becomes unusable. A VPN can also protect you against security threats linked to Kodi such as Man in The Middle attacks.

Not all VPNs are suitable for Kodi users. Every VPN service will slow your internet connection but some much more than others. Without a fast VPN provider, you’ll be left frustrated with a slow connection. Additionally, many VPNs keep logs of their customers’ activity, defeating the purpose of using a VPN to stay private online.

We recommend IPVanish. It works seamlessly with Kodi, is one of the fastest VPNs available and, unlike many VPNs, does not log your browsing activity. IPVanish works with all popular devices and is the easiest VPN to install on a Firestick that we have tested.

What is the Sports World Kodi addon?

Sportsworld menu

Sports World is a third-party addon that provides access to various live sports TV channels. It works by finding these links on several different streaming sites and aggregating them in one place for easier access.

The biggest issue with Sports World is that none of its content is properly licensed. While there is a menu option titled “Sports Channels”, this does not actually allow you to select an individual channel to watch. Instead, it searches for new channels and adds them to the correct category. This leads to discrepancies, such as when general sporting news channels are assigned to one particular sport’s category.

Sports World has no user-accessible options and cannot be configured at all. There is no way to add legitimate sources of content, and no way to disable those providers that offer unlicensed streams. During our tests we found several inaccessible providers and those that worked took a long time to load since they offered so many games.

Sports World is currently only available from a single little-known repository. Also, the developer appears to have no social media presence. This means that if the repo or addon were to be hijacked, it’s very likely that Sports World users would receive no warning. There are several official Kodi addons that can provide much of the same functionality as Sports World with far less risk.

For the reasons above, we do not recommend that Kodi users install or stream content through Sports World.

Alternatives to the Sports World addon

Sports World offers nothing to Kodi users who want to stream officially licensed media. However, there are many Kodi addons that offer legitimate sources for a wide range of sporting content. These addons are not only safer, but are more reliable as they are not at risk of receiving takedown notices from the copyright holder.

Sportsnet Now

Sportsnet Now on Kodi

Sportsnet Now is a service that offers live and on-demand Canadian sporting content. It covers a wide range of sports including hockey, curling, and baseball.

You can use the Sportsnet Now addon to view Sportsnet content directly through Kodi. There’s no free-to-watch content available, so you will require a Sportsnet account. This costs $24.99 per month, but may already be included in your cable package.

Sportsnet region-locks their content, so if you live outside of Canada you’ll have to connect your VPN to a Canadian server in order to watch anything. Certain hockey games have additional restrictions, but you can watch these by connecting to a server in the region of Canada that one of the playing teams is from.

The Sportsnet Now addon is available in the official Kodi addon repository.

USTV Now

USTV Now Kodi addon

USTV Now is an online service designed to allow members of the US armed forces to watch US TV while overseas. However, it doesn’t require any kind of identity verification and anyone can sign up for an account.

USTV Now has three different membership options. A free membership provides access to seven network TV stations, but by paying $19 a month you can unlock 25 additional channels. These include ESPN and ESPN 2, and NBC Sports, so USTV Now is a solid choice for sports fans.

The USTV Now Kodi addon includes TV guide and DVR functionality (for paid subscriptions). While USTV say that their content is only available to US citizens, they don’t region-lock their streams and as a result, they can be watched from anywhere in the world.

The USTV Now addon is available in the official Kodi addon repository.

FOX Sports GO

Fox Sports Go addon

The FOX Sports GO addon allows you to watch live and on-demand sporting content within Kodi. It requires a Fox Sports subscription, but this may already be included in your cable TV subscription or one of your other streaming subscriptions like PlayStation Vue or Sling TV.

This addon covers all of the more popular sports like football and baseball, but also some that are less commonly seen, such as NASCAR and college basketball. Selected content is available outside of the US, but to view everything on offer, you’ll have to connect your VPN to an American server.

The FOX Sports GO addon is available in the official Kodi addon repository.

Overview and privacy concerns

Sports World may appear attractive, but it comes with significant risk and does not include any kind of customization features. None of its streams are authorized by the copyright holder, and with no way to add or remove specific content providers, it’s impossible to see if any officially licensed content is available.

Because Sports World is a third-party addon, it was less likely to have been developed with the same stringent technical validation processes as most official addons. This means that it likely includes more vulnerables for an attacker to exploit and poses a greater risk than its official competitors.

We’ve mentioned some alternatives to the Sports World addon above and in other articles, and we’re confident that there’s an addon out there that would suit you better. The official sports addons we’ve recommended previously are not only safer, but allow you to support the athletes and broadcasters who make this content available in the first place.
