Israel is one of the most connected countries in the region, and its tech is the most advanced. However, that doesn’t mean there are zero restrictions on content. These restrictions sometimes call for a VPN in Israel.
Short for Virtual Private Network, a VPN encrypts all the internet traffic flowing to and from your device by routing it via an intermediary server. It’s sturdy software that guarantees anonymity and privacy. All of the VPN providers we recommend have servers in Israel that will let you hide your real IP address so that you browse the web and watch Israeli TV channels abroad as if you were physically located there.
If you don’t want to read the full article, here’s a summary list of the best VPNs for Israel.

PureVPN has a network spanning 65+ countries, though it doesn’t offer Israeli servers. It’s a strong choice for streaming, torrenting, or staying safe on public Wi-Fi. With a 10-connection limit, you can secure all of your most-used devices simultaneously. Help is available via the 24/7 live chat service, and in our experience, staff tend to respond within a few minutes.
PureVPN’s download speeds averaged 132.34 Mbps in our tests, and were notably consistent. You’ll have no trouble streaming in the highest resolution available or placing video calls while connected.
The provider works with a range of international streaming services, including Netflix, Disney Plus, Max, and Amazon Prime Video.

This provider offers uncrackable 256-bit encryption, multiple connection protocols, and DNS leak protection, as well as a kill switch. There’s also automatic obfuscation, which can help you bypass country-wide censorship and access your favorite sites while traveling.

With a strict no-logs policy in place, there’s no need to worry about having your activities revealed after the fact. We would prefer if there was a way to pay anonymously and if the tracker-blocker was available to all subscribers, however.
PureVPN has its own iOS, Android, Linux, Windows, and macOS apps. Further, it can be manually installed on a wide range of routers, allowing you to bypass the 10-device cap.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a simple VPN for basic streaming, torrenting, and safe browsing
- You appreciate built-in ad-blocking and tracker prevention tools
- You want a VPN for accessing international content like Netflix and Amazon Prime
Don’t buy this VPN if:

ProtonVPN has more than 12,000 servers spread across 117+ countries and around a dozen in Israel. In our latest tests, it delivered average speeds of 138.72 Mbps, making it a good choice for more demanding online activities.
The provider is capable of accessing a huge range of streaming platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Sling TV (though you’ll need a paid subscription for this). Users can connect 10 devices at a time, block ads automatically, and speak to staff day or night using the live chat service.

We’re big fans of this VPN’s security offering. For starters, there’s unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. Additionally, it supports split tunneling and port forwarding, plus there are special Secure Core servers that are kept in high-security data centers for even greater privacy. Most importantly, ProtonVPN has been audited to prove that it doesn’t keep logs. You can even pay in Bitcoin or cash to sign up without providing any personal information.

Our Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for Israel
There are hundreds of VPNs to choose from, which can be more than a little confusing for the average person. To help untangle the good from the bad, we objectively tested each provider in five key areas:
Speed
It’s vital that your chosen VPN is fast enough to cope with a range of online activities. To weed out any overly slow providers, we carried out multiple speed tests while connected to their US servers.
Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app. To make the tests more representative, we rate-limited our test machine to 250 Mbps (which is a little slower than the median fixed broadband speed in the US).
The results for each VPN were averaged and then converted to a score out of 10 relative to the other tested providers. This makes a side-by-side comparison possible.
NordVPN was the fastest provider overall, and your best bet if you’re planning on streaming, gaming or torrenting while connected. Surfshark was a little slower, but also well-suited to a wide range of online activities.
Streaming suitability
We scored each VPN on the number of countries it had servers in. A good spread of servers means you’ll always be able to find a relatively nearby server for the best possible speeds. It’ll also give you the chance to access geo-restricted services.
As many VPNs are blocked by streaming platforms, we tested each VPN with some of the most popular streaming services. This included Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney Plus.
NordVPN’s score of 9.7 out of 10 was highest. The provider has servers in 118 countries and worked with all the Israeli TV channels and international services that we tried it with. If you’re looking for an alternative, ExpressVPN or Surfshark are excellent options.
Security and Privacy
Going online while traveling abroad comes with increased risk if you’re connecting to public Wi-Fi hotspots. The best VPNs encrypt your data and protect you from leaks, with some able to automatically connect when unfamiliar networks are detected. You can see how each VPN performed against our various security and privacy test metrics in the table below.

NordVPN and Surfshark each scored an impressive 9.5 out of 10. They both use strong encryption and RAM-only servers as standard. They each have independently audited no-logs policies and obfuscation that can bypass blocks in countries such as China and the UAE. ProtonVPN and PIA are the next-best alternatives (though it’s worth noting that neither works in China).

Surfshark was the best-value provider overall, though it was closely followed by IPVanish. Both VPNs allow unlimited device connections — which makes them great for sharing with friends and family. They also have generous two-year introductory offers (with Surfshark’s being the slightly cheaper of the two).
How to watch Israeli TV from abroad with a VPN
Israel is home to a ton of live and on-demand TV programming. Popular live channels include Keshet, Mako, BeTipul, and Channels 1, 2, 10, and 24. You can also stream video on demand from Isramedia, Hot, Walla, and Yes.
Many of the online streams for these channels restrict watching to viewers in Israel, which means people outside of Israel will need an Israeli IP address to watch. A VPN can change your IP address to anywhere it has servers. Once you’ve signed up for one of our recommended VPNs with servers in Israel, just follow these steps to watch Israeli TV while traveling abroad.
Here’s how to watch Israeli TV from anywhere with a VPN:
- Download and install the VPN app for your device; we recommend NordVPN.
- Open the VPN app and select an Israeli VPN server. Alternatively, if you’re an American visiting Israel, you could use a server in the US to access platforms like Hulu during your trip.
- Hit the Connect button
- Once the connection has been established, open the video as you normally would. You now have an IP address for Israel and the stream should now be accessible. If not, try clearing your cookies and browser cache or contact your VPN’s customer support for help.
Note: The same method applies for accessing any other geo-blocked Israeli content and online services, like online banking or Government websites.
Can I use a free VPN in Israel?
It’s easy to find a free VPN if you don’t want to splurge for one.
However, free VPN services come with several limitations. You don’t have a large network of servers to choose from. Encryption standards are weak, at best. And be prepared for speed throttling and bandwidth caps — there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
Such services may come across as free, but they have overheads too – staff salaries, office space, and server maintenance. At the same time, they’re not charities – so it’s likely that they’re monetizing by selling your data to whoever can cough up the cash for it and inject tons of invasive advertisements.
If you’re okay with these infractions and lousy service, then a free VPN isn’t half-bad. But paid versions are a class apart – with speed, privacy, and security guaranteed.
What is the state of the internet in Israel?
The Israeli government has long touted itself as the only democracy in the Middle East, but that doesn’t mean it’s a libertarian utopia with zero government intervention in public life.
Advocacy body Freedom House also ranked press freedom in Israel as “free” in 2025. That said, it notes that media outlets and journalists are subject to military censorship — particularly when it comes to sensitive matters like the ongoing conflict with Palestinians.
Generally, internet users are free to express any opinion or belief without fear of repercussion, providing it doesn’t advocate for a boycott of Israel or stoke tensions. Still, you can be held without charge for four days if you’re suspected of certain security-related offenses. For peace of mind, we recommend you use a VPN while browsing the web in Israel.
Israel VPN FAQs
How do I set up a VPN on a router in Israel?
If your VPN supports manual configuration on a router, and your router supports the same VPN protocol(s) as your VPN provider, then you can set up the VPN on your router. This will connect every device on the wi-fi network to the VPN but only count as a single device. A router setup is a great option for devices that don’t normally support VPNs, such as smart TVs and game consoles.
How you set up a router VPN depends on your router’s firmware, your VPN provider, and the VPN protocol you want to use. The process can vary quite a bit depending on these factors, but you can learn more in our article on VPN routers.
Is using a VPN legal in Israel?
There are some restrictions on accessing content in the Middle Eastern country, but the use of VPNs in Israel is perfectly legal. It’s worth noting that you are still liable for any crimes you commit while connected to the VPN, however.
Disclaimer: Although we’ve thoroughly researched this topic, international law is a complex and ever-changing thing. Nothing in this post should be considered legal advice. If there’s any doubt in your mind, please consult a lawyer.
Is it legal to use torrents in Israel?
Laws are a little murky here, but social media reports suggest authorities turn a blind eye when it comes to penalizing users who indulge in torrents. At the time of writing, there have been no documented cases of arrests of people downloading copyrighted material.
Will a VPN for Israel slow my internet down?
It’s normal for a VPN to slow your connection to some extent. Whether the speed difference is noticeable or not depends on the quality of your VPN. Simply, some VPNs are much faster than others. Of course, all need to encrypt and re-route your data via their servers. However, some VPNs offer faster protocols such as WireGuard. They may also offer more servers per user, reducing load and providing superior performance as a result.
In summary, a VPN for Israel may slow your internet down, but the difference can be minimal, providing you use one of the fastest VPNs.
How will I know that my connection has been changed to Israel?
