how to get a Serbian IP address

Quick Summary
In Short

  • Most Serbian streaming services aren’t available in other countries, which causes problems for international travelers.
  • VPNs make it easy to regain access to your usual content during a trip abroad and offer a wide range of security benefits too.
  • We’ve performed extensive testing on more than 50 top providers to find out which are the best VPNs for getting a Serbian IP address.
  • NordVPN is the best overall VPN for obtaining an IP address from Serbia. It’s privacy-conscious, fast, and versatile while remaining beginner-friendly.

Often, if you travel abroad, you’ll find that the services you’ve taken for granted are not available outside of your home country. Streaming services are the most obvious example of this, with most Serbian streaming platforms requiring the user to have a Serbian IP address to watch anything. Here’s the good news: with a VPN, you can get around this kind of geo-blocking in a matter of seconds.

Normally, geo-restricted services get your location from your IP address. If you’re connected to a VPN, though, they’ll only be able to see the IP address of the server you’re using. In other words, by connecting to a Serbian VPN server, you can trick websites into thinking you’re still in Serbia, regardless of where you really are. Better still, your traffic will be encrypted, protecting you from snoopers like your employer, ISP, government, or the owner of any public hotspots you use.

In this article, we’ll explain how to use a VPN to get an IP address for Serbia and list the best VPNs for the job. Short on time? No problem. Here’s a quick list of our recommended VPNs:

How to get an IP address from Serbia

The easiest way to get a Serbian IP address is to use a VPN. A VPN routes your internet traffic through an encrypted server in the country of your choosing, in this case, Serbia, effectively spoofing your location. And don’t worry if you’ve never used one before, just follow the simple steps below to set up a VPN and change your IP address in minutes.

Here’s how to get a Serbian IP address using a VPN:

  1. Start by deciding which VPN you’d like to use. We particularly recommend NordVPN.
  2. Next, install the app on all of your most commonly-used devices. Usually, providers allow five or so connections at once.
  3. When you’re ready, log in and connect to a Serbian VPN server. This will change your IP address, allowing you to use geo-blocked platforms like RTS outside of Serbia.
  4. You should now be browsing with a secure connection. To make sure everything is working as expected, try watching a Serbian TV channel like PRVA.
  5. If it fails to load, clear your cookies and reload the page or contact your VPN’s support team directly for more help.

There are a ton of VPN options on the market, but in our experience, versatile services tend to beat those that excel in one particular area, like speed. The VPNs we’re recommending fit the criteria below:

  • Offers consistently high-speed connections for streaming and downloading

  • Doesn’t log any personally identifiable information
  • Provides apps for all major platforms and devices
  • Has reliable customer support (bonus points if its 24/7)
  • Is good value for money with a money-back guarantee

You can read more about how we test and rank the VPNs we recommend in our methodology section below. For now, let’s take a look at the ones that made the cut.

NordVPN is our first choice for getting an IP address from Serbia. It operates more than 7,000 servers worldwide, covering 100 countries, and can reliably unblock Sportklub, RTA, and just about any streaming platform. Best of all, it works anywhere thanks to its censorship-beating obfuscated servers and NordWhisper protocol. You’ll be able to connect up to 10 devices at once and get support via 24/7 live chat.

Screenshot showing NordVPN's Serbia servers
Despite this VPN’s advanced functionality, it remains welcoming to novice users, with a clean interface and both map and list-based server selection

If your goal is to watch Serbian TV abroad, you’ll need a relatively quick connection. To make sure NordVPN was up to the task, we tested its Serbian servers at three times of day (morning, noon, and afternoon). This lets us see not only how fast it is, but also how its speeds vary during busier periods. Let’s take a look:

NordVPN delivered an average speed of 190.17 Mbps, the highest of any provider on this list. It was extremely consistent, too, varying by just 5 Mbps throughout the day. This means that you’ll be able to handle data-intensive tasks like streaming and torrenting without any noticeable slowdown and can even multitask if that interests you.

When it comes to security, NordVPN is one of the best. It keeps you safe using a kill switch, 256-bit AES encryption, and automatic malware scanning. There’s also DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak protection and obfuscated servers that offer even greater digital privacy. NordVPN doesn’t keep logs, which means your activities can’t be traced back to you. 24/7 support is available over live chat and email.

NordVPN apps are available for Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS devices. Alternatively, users can manually configure this service on supported wireless routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want the fastest speeds for streaming RTS, PRVA, and other Serbian TV
  • You need obfuscated servers to bypass censorship when accessing Serbian services from restrictive countries
  • You want a no-logs VPN with extensive independent audits
  • You plan to stream Netflix and other global platforms (NordVPN works reliably across all)
  • You prefer a beginner-friendly and easy-to-use interface

Screenshot showing Surfshark's Serbia servers
This low-cost service is perfect for beginners, boasting a simple design and servers capable of accessing almost any streaming platform abroad

The key question we have to answer is whether Surfshark is fast enough for day-to-day usage. Our experts ran a series of speed tests to find out, measuring the performance of this VPN’s Serbian servers at different points throughout a typical day. You’ll find the results in the following table:

Surfshark provided an average speed of 178.7 Mbps, well above what most people would expect from a budget VPN. In fact, it was actually the second-fastest service we tested! In other words, you don’t have to worry about stuttering, buffering, or lag when streaming TV from Serbia. Naturally, this means that it’s quick enough for video calling, playing games, and torrenting too.

This service has a very strong security focus, as evidenced by its DNS and IPv6 leak protection, 256-bit encryption, automatic malware scanning, and customizable kill switch. That’s not all: there’s also a NoBorders feature capable of bypassing stringent country-wide internet restrictions. Further, Surfshark doesn’t log any data that could identify you. If you’d prefer to sign up anonymously, you can pay in Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Ripple. 24/7 live chat is available.

Surfshark users can install Android, iOS, Windows, MacOS, or Linux apps. Select network routers are also supported via manual configuration.

Screenshot of IPVanish's Serbian servers
IPVanish has a large network and displays important metrics about your connection right there on the location page

So just how quick is IPVanish? Historically, it’s ranked very highly in our industry-wide speed tests. All the same, it’s important to retest regularly since even a minor network optimization can have a large impact. Below, you’ll find the results of our testing showing IPVanish’s speeds in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon:

With an average speed of 175.93 Mbps, IPVanish was the third-fastest provider we tried. It was remarkably consistent too, with only 4 Mbps of difference between its highest and lowest results. If you’re someone who likes to participate in data-intensive activities like streaming, torrenting, or gaming, this VPN would be a fantastic choice.

This service clearly takes its users’ security seriously: it keeps you safe with a combination of 256-bit AES encryption, IPv6 and DNS leak protection, and a kill switch. Further, there’s a traffic scrambling feature that lets you access services with particularly strong VPN-detection measures. Here’s the best part: IPVanish doesn’t keep any logs at all, meaning your activities can’t be traced back to you. Additionally, if you need help, 24/7 live chat is available.

Screenshot of ExpressVPN's serbia servers
ExpressVPN boasts speedy servers in Serbia and the ability to unblock virtually any major streaming platform abroad

Given that streaming requires a reasonably quick connection, we wanted to be sure that ExpressVPN was up to the task. This involved testing its Serbian servers at three different times of day using a 250 Mbps connection. Let’s see how ExpressVPN did, and equally important, how consistent it was:

ExpressVPN’s average speed was 138.7 Mbps, placing it firmly on the higher end of the performance spectrum. With just 5 Mbps of variability, it’s also one of the more reliable options around, making it a solid pick for anyone interested in streaming TV from Serbia during a trip abroad.

This VPN includes several advanced security features like 256-bit encryption, protection against DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leaks, and a kill switch. It can be configured to let certain apps and websites bypass the VPN entirely, which is helpful when you want to access geo-restricted services from multiple regions at once. ExpressVPN doesn’t log any personally identifiable info and has had its apps, infrastructure, and privacy policy all independently-audited.

ExpressVPN provides iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux apps. Further, it has custom router firmware that makes it easy to protect your entire home network.

CyberGhost boasts servers in around 100 countries, Serbia included. It takes a different approach from many of its rivals, letting users see at a glance which servers are best for tasks like gaming, watching TV, and torrenting. On that note, this VPN works perfectly with even the most stubborn streaming services. There’s a seven-connection limit and 24/7 customer support (though hopefully you’ll never need it).

Screenshot of CyberGhost's serbia servers
This provider doesn’t have any streaming servers located in Serbia but in our experience, the general purpose ones work perfectly well for TV

CyberGhost has a history of impressive performance results but here at Comparitech, we strive to provide readers with the most accurate and up-to-date information. For that reason, we tested its servers in Serbia three more times (once in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon). Let’s see how it did:

Remarkably well, it turns out! CyberGhost’s average speed was 128.97 Mbps, which is more than 10 times what’s required to watch 4K video without interruption. Our team were also able to play fast-paced online games, download large files, and make video calls without any noticable performance issues.

There’s no need to worry about snoopers, as CyberGhost comes pre-configured for security. It uses 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and automatic malware scanning, as well as IPv6 and DNS leak protection to keep your online activities private. Further, CyberGhost refuses to log any personally identifiable data and has been audited to prove it. There’s also a smart rules tab that lets you decide how and when the VPN connects automatically.

CyberGhost has simple, easy-to-use apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. You can install the VPN manually on select routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want task-specific servers, including options geared for streaming

6. PrivateVPN

Apps Available:

  • PC
  • Mac
  • IOS
  • Android
  • Linux

Website:  www.PrivateVPN.com

Money-back guarantee: 30 DAYS

PrivateVPN is the only service in this list that owns its servers outright and acts as its own ISP. This gives it significantly more control over who has access to its infrastructure (200 servers in 60+ countries) and user traffic. Watching Serbian TV abroad won’t be an issue either, since this VPN works with major platforms like Netflix and can even sidestep the world’s strictest online censorship.

Screenshot of PrivateVPN's Serbia servers
This VPN might have a smaller network but its Serbian servers are quick, reliable, and capable of handling anything you throw at them

To find out what kind of performance users can expect from this service, we had our team run three speed tests over the course of the day. We were specifically concerned with seeing how fast and consistent the Serbian servers were since these are likely what you’ll use for streaming:

With an average speed of 71.98 Mbps, PrivateVPN isn’t the fastest provider around but it’s still highly competitive. For instance, this is enough for users to live stream Serbian TV, take part in a video call, and download files in the background without any significant impact on quality. Its speeds varied by around 8 Mbps throughout the day too, which is about average.

This service has an impressive range of security features, including DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, and 256-bit encryption. There’s even a togglable stealth mode that scrambles your traffic, hiding the telltale signs that you’re using a VPN. This is particularly helpful for accessing platforms that normally block VPN users. This service doesn’t store any logs at all, and offers live chat-based support during European business hours.

PrivateVPN has iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows apps. This VPN can also be installed manually on supported Linux distros and routers. Up to 10 devices can be protected at the same time.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want a provider that owns and controls its servers directly for added privacy
  • You want to unblock difficult platforms like Netflix, RTS, and Serbian regional content
  • You’re a privacy-first user seeking a no-logs policy and solid encryption

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You expect lightning-fast speeds for heavy streaming or torrenting
  • You need a 24/7 live chat for immediate troubleshooting

HIGHLY VERSATILE:PrivateVPN is one of the most reliable ervices we’ve tested, and can securely access Netflix, RTS, and more abroad. It also has a great range of security and privacy features built-in and even offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Website:  www.ProtonVPN.com

Money-back guarantee: 30 DAYS

ProtonVPN has roughly 50 servers in Serbia and 12,000 more in another 110+ countries around the world. However, while there is a limited free plan, you’ll have to upgrade to use most of its network. This also lets you secure 10 devices at a time, contact support staff day or night using the live chat service, and block ads automatically. It’s also a fantastic choice for streaming, easily unblocking tricky platforms like Disney+, Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer abroad.

Screenshot showing ProtonVPN's Serbia servers
This VPN tells you which servers are optimized for streaming and torrenting, plus it shows the current load of each

If you’re trying to get a Serbian IP address, you’re likely interested in streaming. That’s a fairly data-intensive task, which means ProtonVPN’s speeds have to be up to scratch. Let’s take a look at the service’s performance at various times of day:

ProtonVPN achieved average speeds of 110.67 Mbps with a remarkably low 5 Mbps between its best and worst result. In practical terms, this means you won’t notice any stuttering, buffering, or low-quality playback when watching Serbian TV abroad. We also had great results using this VPN to stream, make video calls, and torrent.

Although it might not be the best option for novices, ProtonVPN gives advanced users lots of tools to play with. There’s support for port forwarding and split tunneling, special Secure Core servers, and a VPN accelerator tool, for instance, plus unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection. ProtonVPN doesn’t keep any logs of your activities, something proven by its independent audit. What’s more, it accepts Bitcoin and cash payments, giving you a way to sign up without providing any personal information.

ProtonVPN apps are available for iOS, Android, MacOS, Windows, and Linux. Alternatively, you can manually install this service on most routers (check the website’s help section for details).

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want advanced security tools like Secure Core, split tunneling, and VPN accelerator

  • Linux

Website:  www.PureVPN.com

Money-back guarantee: 31 DAYS

PureVPN offers access to thousands of ultra-fast servers spread across 65 countries including Serbia. Not only that, but it excels at evading detection; whether you’re visiting China or trying to access stubborn services like RTS and Netflix, you shouldn’t have any problems. As such, it’s a great choice for anyone hoping to use their favorite sites while on vacation. Users can connect 10 devices at the same time, chat directly to support staff, and torrent as much as they like.

Screenshot showing PureVPN's Serbia servers
This VPN has high-speed servers all over the world, and its Serbian ones are ideal for streaming

PureVPN is known for providing stable connections, but we wanted to see whether that reputation was still deserved. That’s why our team performed three speed tests on its Serbian servers throughout a normal day. The chart below shows how this VPN did in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon:

This service delivered an average speed of 55.73 Mbps, with results fluctuating by around 11 Mbps. That’s a little higher than normal, but still nothing to worry about. In fact, we were able to watch live TV broadcasts, download files, and play games without any issues. If your base connection is fairly slow to begin with, though, you might want to look into a VPN with a slightly lower footprint.

We’ve always said that you shouldn’t have to be a networking expert to stay safe online, and PureVPN seems to agree. By default, it uses uncrackable encryption, a kill switch (on most platforms), and leak protection to shield your activities from prying eyes. There’s also a toggleable tracker-blocker, though this only works if you sign up for the Plus or Max plan. Most importantly, PureVPN has a strict no-logs policy and has passed four independent audits.

PureVPN has apps for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. It also supports a wide range of routers, allowing you to get around the already generous connection limit.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You’re a beginner looking for a fast, easy-to-use app to stream Serbian TV abroad
  • You need a VPN that allows torrenting on all servers, including those in Serbia

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You need advanced features like port forwarding, split tunneling, or obfuscation
  • You require full-feature parity across devices

Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for a Serbian IP address

Due to the vast number of VPN providers that are advertised online, it is extremely hard to know which service is worth your time. At Comparitech, we work hard to test all the market-leading VPNs, ensuring they offer a high-quality service before we recommend them to you. Here’s a quick guide to the five main areas we considered when picking the best VPNs for getting a Serbian IP address:

Speed

Every VPN will reduce your connection speeds to some degree but some providers have a much larger impact than others. Getting accurate test results is difficult though, since speeds vary based on time of day, distance between you and your chosen server, and several other factors. So how can we mitigate these issues?

For starters, we perform three speed tests instead of one. These are run in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon, using a 250 Mbps connection and the VPN’s Serbian servers. Finally, our team averages the results and normalizes them relative to one another, which results in a score out of 10 for each VPN tested.

As you can see, NordVPN was the fastest provider we tried, with Surfshark and IPVanish coming second and third, respectively. However, it’s important to note that every VPN in this list was quick enough for day to day tasks like streaming; it’s just that some offered more overhead, making them better for doing lots of things at once.

Functionality

Our next challenge was gaining an understanding of how versatile each VPN was. To do this, we first examined how many countries its network covered aside from Serbia, whether it worked in high-censorship countries like China, and how reliably it could access Netflix abroad. This is an important bellweather since Netflix is one of the trickiest platforms to access and if a VPN works with that, it’ll likely work with most other sites too.

NordVPN took first place here too, only losing out because ProtonVPN had more server locations to choose from. It was the most reliable option for streaming regional Netflix libraries and the only VPN with two methods of getting around country-wide censorship.

Security and privacy

Keeping your online activities private is a VPN’s primary goal, so any services that can’t do this aren’t worth using. Before we can recommend a service, we first ensure it uses unbreakable encryption and offers safeguards including a kill switch, protection against IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC leaks, and a privacy-first logging policy. It’s understandable if some of the technical terms above went over your head. To provide you a more easily-understandable comparison of different providers, we’ve created a chart showing the security score of each side-by-side.

Our top two providers were NordVPN and Surfshark. Each offers a robust selection of security features and has backed up their privacy claims with multiple independent audits. We would prefer to see NordVPN shore up its authentication slightly and Surfshark could do with being based outside of a Nine Eyes country, though.

Ease of use

The easier a VPN is to use, the better. That’s why we prioritize providers that simplify day to day operation as much as possible. This might be by offering task-specific servers, automatic obfuscation, split tunneling support, or just clearly-labelled settings and well-designed apps. The table below shows every factor that went into our scoring decisions in this category.

Once again, NordVPN scored the highest with an impressive 9.6 points out of 10. Despite having lots of advanced features, it presents these in a way that feels welcoming to novice users, and we really liked that it’s capable of unblocking most streaming platforms with its general-purpose servers. Of course, its generous 10-connection limit didn’t hurt either.

Streaming

The vast majority of streaming services have some form of geographic restriction designed to prevent anyone from accessing them outside of specific countries. Now, VPNs are a great way to sidestep this problem but streaming platforms know this and are quite good at blocking VPN connections. To find out which VPNs are best for watching your usual TV channels abroad, we tested them against some of the most popular services and assigned points based on how they fared in the areas below:

We have a three-way tie for first place between NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN. These providers were all able to access every platform we tried and very rarely required us to try more than one server. We also really liked that NordVPN can access Netflix from any server — if you try to access a library it can’t access, it’ll just default you to the US catalog.

Getting a Serbian IP address with a free VPN

Although it’s tempting to try, it’s extremely unlikely that you’ll be able to get a Serbian IP address with a free VPN. These services usually have very small networks and, as such, cluster their servers in high-demand regions like the US. Even if you do find a free VPN with Serbian servers, you’ll likely have to contend with very slow speeds and limited bandwidth, making these services a poor choice for streaming.

What’s more, free VPNs are much less secure than their paid counterparts. In fact, many fail to secure your traffic with encryption, making them no safer than browsing normally. There’s also the question of who can see what you get up to online and what they do with this data. Paid services will tell you exactly what data they log upfront, but this is rarely the case with free VPNs, which have been known to collect your data and sell it to third parties.

To be as safe as possible, we recommend resisting the temptation of free VPNs and using a reputable VPN with a strict no-logs policy and a money-back guarantee instead.

Frequently asked questions

What can I do with a Serbian IP address?

A Serbian IP address will allow you to securely access Serbian streaming platforms no matter where you are in the world. It also allows you to browse the internet freely since Serbia doesn’t really block access to any material outright. This could be useful if you’re traveling somewhere with online censorship like Russia; the Serbian servers are relatively nearby and should offer lower latency than those elsewhere in the world.

VPNs are also great for accessing your online banking safely. Many banks restrict access to users’ accounts when they detect a login attempt that came from abroad. The problem is that automated services can’t distinguish between a hacker in another country and a Serb on vacation. However, by using a Serbian VPN server, you can hide the fact that you’re abroad and access your Intesa, Unicredit, or Telenor Banka online banking service without worrying about being locked out of your account.

Lastly, VPNs are great for keeping you safe when using public Wi-Fi hotspots in cafes, hotels, etc. These can be notoriously insecure and a magnet for hackers and snoopers. A VPN will keep your information and activities safe.

Can I live stream Serbian TV online?

It’s possible to watch a wide variety of Serbian content online, free of charge. Here’s a list of some major Serbian TV channels that let you stream their shows online:

  • RTS
  • RTV
  • PRVA
  • RTCG
  • B92
  • Happy TV

Is it legal to use a VPN to gain a Serbian IP address?

VPN use is legal in most countries in the world, including Serbia. A VPN is a legitimate tool to use to protect your online safety. However, while using a VPN is perfectly legal, any illegal activity carried out online will remain illegal regardless of whether you use a VPN or not. For example, while a VPN may cover your tracks and keep your activity hidden from your internet provider, torrenting copyrighted material while using a VPN doesn’t make it legal.
