Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) allow you to connect to servers all over the world. Most major streaming platforms check the user’s IP address to see if they’re within a given broadcast area before allowing them to watch anything. By using a server in a Hong Kong, you can obtain a new, Hong Kong IP address and trick these services into letting you watch your favorite content from home, no matter where you are in the world.
Most people don’t realize that their online activities aren’t private. Hackers are always a threat, but realistically, you’re far more likely to be monitored by your own Internet Service Provider (ISP), employer, government, or university. When connected to a VPN, however, your traffic is encrypted and as a result, cannot be read by any of these entities. In short, you’re almost completely anonymous online.
How to get a Hong Kong IP address
New to VPNs and not sure how to get started? Don’t worry, it’s actually pretty simple.
Here’s how to get a Hong Kong IP address:

Can’t I just use a free VPN?
While free VPN providers want you to believe that their offerings are just as good as paid services, that’s not usually the case. They have fewer servers yet much larger user bases, so there’s a constant strain on their networks. This leads to extremely slow speeds, which is a particular problem if you’re trying to stream HD video from abroad. Free VPNs are often the first services to be blacklisted by major streaming platforms, meaning you may not be able to access anything in the first place.
It’s incredibly expensive to build and maintain an international server network, so how do free VPNs do it? You’ll almost always find that they inject large ads into pages you visit, but some actually use tracking cookies to harvest valuable user data, such as which sites are your favorite and how often you visit them. VPNs are supposed to protect your privacy but by monitoring and selling details of your activities to the highest bidder, these services actively undermine it.
Most importantly, there’s no guarantee that the service you choose will be safe. Recent research has shown that of 283 free VPN apps tested, over 37% contained malware, 18% never used any kind of encryption, and 66% were vulnerable to DNS leaks. We’ve even seen previously respected services use shady business practices, such as when Hola was caught selling its users’ bandwidth to help run a botnet back in 2016.
To keep yourself safe, we strongly suggest using a security-conscious VPN with a history of protecting its users’ privacy.
Can I watch TV from Hong Kong online with a VPN?
Once you’ve connected to a server in Hong Kong, you’re free to access Hong Kong-based services as though you were physically there. This means that you’ll be able to stream previously inaccessible content on services like Netflix, ViuTV, or MyTV online from anywhere in the world.
You should bear in mind that some platforms restrict access in other ways. For instance, if you’re asked to pay using a Hong Kong-only credit card or if you have to prove you actually live in Hong Kong, it’s near impossible to gain access as someone who lives abroad. That said, if you’re a Hongkonger who’s currently abroad, you’ll still be able to sign up using your regular payment details.
What else can I do with a Hong Kong IP address?
These days, many services (including PayPal and most online banking platforms) automatically send out alerts when your account is accessed from another country. Some even restrict access until you’ve verified your identity. This could potentially cause problems if, for instance, you’re stuck in a foreign country without access to your bank account. However, if you connect to one of your VPN’s servers in your home country before logging in, most platforms won’t even realize you’re out of the country.
When on vacation, you’re usually more reliant on public wifi networks. Of course, these present their own problems: they might restrict access to certain websites and there’s really no way to tell who can see your activities. When using a VPN, not only does your traffic become unreadable, but you’re also able to bypass arbitrary blocking and freely access whatever content you like.
Internet censorship in Hong Kong
In contrast with China, Hong Kong’s internet is actually almost completely open. Only websites that freely share licensed content are blocked. This is standard practice across much of the western world, but extremely rare in Asia.
Despite the lack of government-enforced internet restrictions, journalists in Hong Kong have been known to self-censor in order to maintain favorable relationships with the Chinese government. Additionally, activists suspect that the Hong Kong government monitors their online activities.
As per the Interception of Communications and Surveillance Ordinance (2006), law enforcement must seek approval from a panel before intercepting a user’s traffic. However, in 2017, 1,314 applications were approved (and just one denied), leading to 170 arrests.
