Getting set up with an Indonesian VPN is easy. Follow the instructions below:

Internet restrictions in Indonesia

In Indonesia, the government imposes online censorship and surveillance to protect the peace and national security, and for cultural, moral, and religious reasons. The Indonesian government has enacted regulations that grant it the authority to impose online censorship and surveillance. Internet service providers (ISPs) in Indonesia are responsible for implementing the blocks ordered by the government.

For instance, the government uses the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE), passed in 2008, to engage in censorship and surveillance of the web. The UU ITE empowers the government with broad powers to regulate online content and penalize individuals or platforms that violate the law. However, the UU ITE has faced criticism for its potential negative impact on freedom of speech and expression in Indonesia.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kementerian Komunikasi dan Informatika) is tasked with censoring the internet in Indonesia. It collaborates with the Indonesian National Police to enforce online censorship and surveillance.

Authorities in Indonesia block access to content that is deemed incompatible with local cultures and religions. This includes blocking adult websites, pornography, content related to alcohol and drugs, and gambling websites.

Not all bans have this veneer of legitimacy, though. The Indonesian goverment has carte blanche to block whatever it wants, simply by saying that the website publishes “negative” content.
