Finding the best VPNs for the Netherlands: Methodology

There are hundreds of VPNs on the market, and they are not all suitable for gaining robust online privacy and security. To ensure that we only recommended the very best VPNs for the Netherlands, we tested each VPN in the following areas:

Network suitability

Having plenty of servers to choose from ensures that you can always access services and content from around the world. We scored providers on their presence in the Netherlands as well as their overall global coverage.

Next, we tested each VPN’s ability to access geo-restricted streaming platforms. In addition to Dutch services like Videoland and NPO, we tried them with difficult-to-access international platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, and BBC iPlayer.

The scores for the above were weighted and then combined to generate overall scores for each provider.

Speed

To ensure you get a VPN that’s fast enough for your preferred online activities, we carried out three speed tests for each provider while connected to their servers in the Netherlands.

Tests were carried out in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon. We used the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app for taking measurements, and rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps. This better emulates the experience of the average user in the US.

Security and privacy

We’ve only recommended VPNs that can completely prevent your data from being intercepted. In addition to checking their encryption and no-logs policies, we looked for DNS leak protection, a kill switch, obfuscation, and other features such as split tunneling, port forwarding, and a SOCKS5 proxy.
