Best VPN Pokémon Go

Quick Summary
In Short

  • When playing Pokémon Go, not everybody has the same level of access to different Pokémon, especially if you live in a rural area.
  • Fortunately, a VPN can help you change your location on Pokémon Go without having to move, so you can catch more Pokémon than you would otherwise be able to.
  • Our team has tested dozens of popular VPNs to see which are the best for securely accessing Pokémon Go and spoofing your location.
  • NordVPN is our top recommendation for Pokémon Go. It boasts high speeds, powerful security tools, and the ability to access geo-blocked services worldwide.

Pokémon Go is incredibly popular, but due to the way the game works, people in rural areas see far fewer Pokémon than those who live in a city. Here’s the good news: with a Virtual Private Network (VPN), a GPS spoofing app, and a little bit of configuration, it’s possible to change your location in Pokémon Go without moving a muscle.

VPNs encrypt your traffic and hide your IP address, replacing it with that of the server you’re connected to. If the server is in the US, for instance, geo-restricted services will think that’s where you are. This means that VPNs are useful for more than just Pokémon Go; you can also use them to enhance your security or access your usual streaming services while on vacation.

Looking for the quick version? Here’s an overview of the best VPNs for Pokémon Go. Read on for a more in-depth review of each provider.

How we found the top Pokémon Go VPNs

There are hundreds of VPNs on the market, but they won’t all be suitable for spoofing your location on Pokémon Go. To take the guesswork out of it for you, we’ve narrowed down the choices by carrying out tests in the following key areas:

  • Ease of use: To help you get a new IP address with the least amount of fuss possible, we used 10 different metrics to find the most user-friendly VPN services.
  • Network scope: We looked for VPNs with thousands of servers across many countries. This ensures you have the widest range of location options when playing Pokémon Go.
  • Security and privacy: To ensure your connection is protected from potentially malicious third parties, we looked for VPNs that performed well against our 16 different test metrics.
  • Streaming: If you get bored with Pokémon Go, it’s nice to have a VPN that works with a range of streaming services. We used nine metrics to find providers that make it easy to access your favorite platform.
  • Speed: To help you avoid laggy connections, we carried out multiple speed tests while connected to each VPN’s servers in the US.

The above is just an overview. You can read more about how we test and rank the VPNs we recommend in the methodology section later in the article.

With novice-friendly apps and a very clean design, Total VPN is perfect for anyone new to the world of VPNs.

Our team tested Total VPN’s American servers at three times of day to get a feel for how quick and reliable they were. We used a 250 Mbps connection since that’s the household average in the US. PrivateVPN has fewer servers than the other VPNs in this list (around 200 in 63+ countries), but it makes up for this with its ability to unblock the most stubborn region-locked services, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. As such, it should have no problem whatsoever helping you spoof your location in Pokémon Go.

While connected to the provider’s US servers, we recorded download speeds averaging 50.65 Mbps. Although slower than the above VPNs, it’s still fast enough for playing Pokémon Go. If you need a speed bump, PrivateVPN allows you to drop the level of encryption used on your traffic to give you a few extra Mbps.

This VPN enhances your privacy using a combination of a kill switch, protection against DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks, and 256-bit AES encryption. You can even enable stealth mode to hide the fact that you’re using a VPN at all. There’s the option to pay with Bitcoin, and PrivateVPN is a zero-logs provider. Live chat-based support is available 22 hours per day.

PrivateVPN allows users to connect up to 10 devices at the same time. It has apps for iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, and Linux devices. Some network routers are also supported, although manual configuration is required.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want stealth mode for use in countries with strict censorship (like China).
  • You’re happy with fewer servers but higher reliability and performance.

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You rely on a large number of server locations (only 200 available).
  • You want advanced feature control or automation tools.

VERY HIGH SPEEDS:PrivateVPN is one of the fastest VPNs around, which means it’s great for anything that uses a lot of bandwidth (like playing Pokémon Go or watching Netflix). Also, PrivateVPN boasts a no-logs policy, powerful encryption, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to change location in Pokémon Go with a VPN

Until recently, you didn’t even need a phone or tablet to spoof your location in Pokémon Go; you could just run an Android emulator and go wherever you wanted. Now, however, many older methods no longer work, and you’ll need a physical Android or iOS device.

Here’s how to change location in Pokémon Go:

Android

Note that this method only works with Android versions 6–8.

  1. Start by downloading version 12.6.87 of the Google Play Services app. Don’t install it just yet.
  2. Go into the settings menu and search for Device admin apps. Now, turn off Find My Device and Google Pay.
  3. Next, install your older version of Google Play Services.
  4. Browse to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > Mobile data and turn off Allow background data usage.
  5. Find Google Play Store in your list of installed apps and hit the Disable button.
  6. Clear Pokémon Go’s stored data and restart your device.
  7. Finally, turn on your GPS spoofing app, connect to a VPN server that’s near wherever you’re hunting Pokémon, and you should be able to go anywhere you like.

If your device has Android 8.1 or higher installed, it’s still technically possible to spoof your location, but you’ll have to root your device. This is a tricky procedure, and there’s a lot that could go wrong, though. Once rooted, you’ll find the most up-to-date setup guides on the Pokémon Go spoofing subreddit.

iOS

Note: spoofing your location on iOS devices is more likely to result in a ban since the most widely used methods involve installing a modded version of the Pokémon Go app. Additionally, since these apps cost money (and you don’t know who will have access to your payment details), we strongly advise against changing your country in Pokémon Go on iOS. If you’re dead set on doing so, though, you’ll find walkthroughs on the Pokémon Go spoofing subreddit mentioned above.

Using a free VPN with Pokémon Go

Understandably, Niantic isn’t crazy about the idea of users who can go wherever they want in-game. In fact, they’ve invested considerable effort into stopping VPNs and GPS spoofing apps from working. As such, free VPNs are highly unlikely to work. Additionally, these services tend to have more users than their networks can support, so you’ll likely notice extremely slow speeds. In some cases, this could even lead to you being kicked from the game.

The second problem is that free VPNs pose a real threat to your security. Recent studies have found that there are huge numbers of malware-carrying apps pretending to be VPNs on major app stores. Worse still, of the ones that were malware-free, 18 per cent used no encryption at all. We’ve even seen major providers take advantage of their users; back in 2015, Hola was caught selling idle user bandwidth to help facilitate a botnet. In short, the best way to protect yourself online is to use a reputable, security-first VPN with a strong record on privacy.

Playing Pokémon Go with a VPN: FAQs

Why use a VPN with Pokémon Go?

VPNs can help you play Pokémon Go in places where it might not normally be available, like most of China. Additionally, if used in conjunction with a GPS spoofing app, users can essentially teleport anywhere. This allows you to catch region-exclusive Pokémon that would otherwise take a lot of time and money to collect.

Will I get into trouble for using a VPN with Pokémon Go?

Technically, GPS spoofing is forbidden in Pokémon Go. Also, the player guidelines do not make exceptions for users who live in really remote areas (where Pokémon rarely spawn). As such, if you decide to change your location in Pokémon Go, you do so at your own risk.

So what’s the worst that could happen? Well, your account could be permanently banned. This is unlikely for a first offense, though; you’re far more likely to receive a warning per Niantic’s three-strike policy. If you continue to spoof your location, you could be temporarily banned for up to a month. Keep it up, and finally, your account will be banned for good. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from making another, but you will lose all of the Pokémon you’ve caught.

Can I spoof my location in Pokémon Go using a modified APK?

We strongly advise against installing modified APKs of any kind. Simply, there’s no real way to tell if the game has been repackaged with malware, and hacks for popular games like Pokémon Go are an easy way for bad actors to quickly gain access to a huge number of unsuspecting victims.

Since you can always change your in-game location using a VPN and easily discoverable GPS spoofing tools, there’s no need to grant a faceless third-party access to your device just to move around in Pokémon Go.

Can I unblock Pokémon Go at school?

Yes, you can use a VPN to bypass your school’s network restrictions and unblock Pokémon Go. Simply connecting to a server ensures your internet traffic is encrypted and hidden from view. You’re then provided with a new, temporary IP address. As such, your school’s network administrator won’t be able to see what you’re doing online.

However, if you’re using a standard VPN protocol, then your school’s network admin will be able to see that you’re using a VPN. If you don’t even want this to be known, then you’ll need to opt for a VPN such as NordVPN (our top recommended VPN for Pokémon Go). It provides obfuscated servers that disguise VPN traffic as regular web traffic.
