Bypass YouTube age verification: Troubleshooting

If you’re still seeing age prompts or Restricted Mode after setting up a VPN, follow the steps below to get everything working properly.

1. Refresh YouTube in your browser. After connecting to the VPN, reload the page or close and reopen your browser.
2. Clear your browser cookies and cache. Old YouTube cookies can override your new IP address and trigger age checks again.
3. Switch to a different VPN server. Try another location in the same country. Some IPs work better than others.
4. Use YouTube in a browser, not the app. The mobile app can rely on additional signals that conflict with a VPN connection.
5. Turn off YouTube Restricted Mode. Make sure Restricted Mode isn’t enabled in your account or browser settings.

If you are living in or visiting any of the countries below, you may suddenly be asked to provide identification. If an age check is triggered on your account while traveling, you may need to verify your age even after you return home. This is why it’s often a good idea to connect to a VPN server back home while traveling overseas.

United Kingdom

YouTube age verification checks in the UK are triggered by the Online Safety Act 2023. The law requires platforms to prevent minors from accessing age-restricted content, which has led YouTube to introduce stricter AI age estimation and, in some cases, ID-based verification.

United States

In the US, there is no single federal law on YouTube age verification. Instead, enforcement is shaped by COPPA (the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) and by a growing number of state-level laws. As a result, YouTube is rolling out AI age checks more broadly across the country.

• Texas: HB1181 requires age verification for online content considered harmful to minors, including all adult sites.
• Louisiana: First state to introduce modern age-verification requirements for online platforms
• Utah: Enforces age-verification rules for adult and age-restricted content
• Arkansas: Requires proof-of-age checks for certain online material

Australia

Following government plans to restrict platform access for users under 17, YouTube has implemented AI age-verification systems in Australia to identify underage users and limit access to mature content.

European Union

Across the EU and the greater European Economic Area (EEA) (with some exceptions, see below), YouTube applies age verification to comply with regional digital safety and data-protection regulations. These rules allow platforms to use AI age estimation or ID checks to restrict access to age-restricted videos.

Germany

Germany has a strong legal framework for online age verification. YouTube enforces stricter checks in Germany to comply with national youth-protection laws. Music content is also often blocked in Germany, which is why a VPN for YouTube is even more important.

France

France has started experimenting with privacy-first age verification systems. These are meant to check your age without fully exposing who you are. YouTube is involved in these trials, and because of that, users in France may experience additional age checks.

Switzerland

How to turn off Restricted Mode on YouTube

Have you already provided ID or connected to a country where age verification isn’t needed? If you’re still facing blocks on videos meant for adults over the age of 18, it’s possible that you need to disable YouTube’s Restricted Mode.

Restricted Mode is different from ID-based age checks. It’s a filter that hides mature content at the account, device, or network level, and it’s often enabled by default on school, work, or family-managed connections.

This means that you may be able to disable it directly in your account settings. If the option is locked, the restriction is being enforced at the network level, in which case using a VPN is often the only way to remove it.

Here are the steps needed to disable Restricted Mode from within your account settings:

1. Open YouTube and make sure you’re signed in to your account.
2. Click or tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
3. Select Settings from the menu.
4. Go to General (on desktop) or Settings > General (on mobile).
5. Find Restricted Mode at the bottom of the page.
6. Toggle Restricted Mode off.
7. Refresh YouTube and try loading the video again.

Is the restricted mode toggle locked? This usually means it has been set up by a parent or guardian, a managed device, or a school or work network, and may require a password to disable.

What is YouTube AI age verification?

YouTube AI age verification is YouTube’s automated system designed to detect a user’s age. The AI system ignores the age you selected when creating your account and instead analyzes user signals to decide how old you are.

The machine-learning models YouTube uses to infer age include analyzing the channels you subscribe to, the videos you watch, the comments you make, and the devices you use to log in and access your account. Other signals include search history, interaction patterns, and account metadata.

Why is YouTube using age verification?

Many countries require a government ID or credit card verification to prove your age. Laws like the UK Online Safety Act help stop children watching adult videos. COPPA means increased age verification in 20 US states, including via the Texas age verification law (HB1181). These state measures protect children by blocking videos that contain nudity, violence, or other adult topics unsuitable for children.

Initially, age verification checks focused on adult websites and pornography. However, over time, these checks have extended to other popular services, including social media networks, streaming sites, and even multiplayer games.

These regulations force users to provide an official government ID, such as a scan of a passport, driver’s license, national identity card, residence permit, state-issued ID card, or, in some cases, valid credit card verification.

Why is YouTube flagging adult accounts? 

Unfortunately, AI age verification can be triggered on adult accounts, including while traveling or after changes in viewing behavior. So if you suddenly start dating someone who has kids, and you let them use your YouTube account to keep them busy watching cartoons, you could find yourself being asked for ID.

Is it dangerous to provide an ID for YouTube?

YouTube includes safety measures to protect IDs in transit, and it claims not to store identity data long-term. However, the fact remains that all online transactions carry risks, and sending ID verification can introduce risks related to Man in the Middle Attacks (interception of IDs in transit), cyberattacks, data breaches, and data leaks. In other words, it is always safer not to send your ID anywhere.

Besides these security risks, it is also true that providing ID introduces significant privacy risks. The videos you watch on YouTube reveal a lot about your interests, preferences, and habits. This data can be used for profiling, to serve ads, and to create additional revenue streams by selling your data to third parties.

The rise of AI also allows for data collection to be combined with inference at scale. Platforms like YouTube can track not only the subjects and channels we most enjoy, but also how we feel about those videos by monitoring our comments. This allows automated systems to gain unprecedented insight into what we think, believe, and are likely to do next.

In some countries, people have even been arrested for the comments they make on social media platforms like YouTube (see below for how to delete your comments). This kind of dystopian overreach is becoming more common every year, which is why it is important to protect your privacy.

NewPipe doesn’t use a Google account, which means it avoids account-based age verification entirely. You’re not asked to upload an ID, add a credit card, or confirm your age with personal documents. From an identity-theft perspective, that’s the big win because you’ll never need to send sensitive ID data over the internet at all.

NewPipe also removes ads, tracking, and account-based ID checks. However, you may still need a VPN to bypass some location-based restrictions and to use NewPipe to watch YouTube videos on restricted networks, such as at work.

What is the YouTube embed trick, and how does it work?

When you watch a YouTube video that has been embedded on a third-party site, it often removes account-based tracking and identification that can trigger ID checks.

This is a useful way to watch a video outside of your YouTube account, which gives you added privacy and lets you watch videos that are blocked inside your account, that you don’t want showing up in your viewing history, or that you don’t want influencing your recommendations.

How to delete YouTube comments

Do you want to improve your privacy on YouTube? Using a VPN to avoid sending your ID to YouTube is a great first step. In fact, this is the best way to keep using YouTube without feeling pressured to self-censor.

That said, there are other things you can do to improve your privacy. Avoid commenting on videos to prevent YouTube from collecting additional information about your thoughts, beliefs, and preferences.

But what if you have already made thousands of comments? If you want to give yourself a clean slate, you can actually go ahead and delete any comments you made previously. You can follow the steps below to delete any previously made YouTube comments:

Delete your old YouTube comments on desktop

1. Open YouTube and make sure you’re signed in.
2. Click your profile icon (top right).
3. Click History.
4. In the left menu, click Comments. (This opens your comment history.)
5. You’ll see a list of your past comments.
6. For each comment you want to remove:
   1. Click the 3 dots next to the comment
   2. Click Delete
7. Repeat for as many comments as you want.

Top Tip: YouTube doesn’t offer a “delete all comments” button, so you’ll need to remove them manually. If you’ve posted a large number over the years, I usually recommend starting fresh with a new account and deleting the old one instead.

Delete your old YouTube comments on mobile

1. Open the YouTube app and sign in.
2. Tap your profile icon (top right).
3. Tap Your data in YouTube (or Settings > Manage all history, depending on your app version).
4. Look for Comments or Interactions, then open your comment history.
5. Tap the 3 dots next to a comment.
6. Tap Delete.

Mobile note: In 2026, the YouTube app does not reliably show a full comment history on all devices. While some users may see comment controls under Your data in YouTube or Manage all history, this varies by app version and region. If you can’t find your comments in the app, you can use your mobile browser to delete them instead (by following my desktop instructions).

How to delete your old YouTube account

Want a clean slate on YouTube? You can delete your old account and start a new one. Just bear in mind that YouTube will probably still keep a record of your old comments, even if you delete your account. However, your comments will get removed from the videos where you made them.

Remember, deleting your YouTube account removes your channel, videos, and public comments. It does not delete your Google account or Gmail. If you want to start completely fresh, you will also need to start a new Google account.

1. Open YouTube in a web browser and sign in.
2. Click your profile icon (top right), then click Settings.
3. Select Advanced settings from the left menu.
4. Click Delete channel. You may be asked to sign in again to confirm your identity.
5. Choose I want to permanently delete my content.
6. Tick the confirmation boxes acknowledging what will be removed (videos, comments, playlists).
7. Click Delete my content, then confirm.

Your YouTube channel will be scheduled for deletion. Public comments are usually removed from videos shortly after.

Can I start a new YouTube account with the same Gmail?

Yes. Once your old YouTube account has been deleted, and all your old comments have been removed, you are free to start again using the same Gmail account. Simply create a new YouTube account later using the same Google account for a fresh start.
