How to get a Vietnam IP address

Vietnam has extremely strict online restrictions and authorities routinely harass journalists and activists, using jail time and extrajudicial violence to discourage people from speaking up against the government. Rather than submit to widespread surveillance, it’s best to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to protect yourself. This also has the added advantage of allowing you to watch Vietnamese TV channels like ATV and VTV while traveling abroad, and to use public hotspots safely.

You might be wondering how a VPN works. It’s really quite simple: your data is encrypted and sent through a server in a location of your choosing. Getting a Vietnamese IP address is quicker and easier than you may think! No matter your location, the process is the same. Just follow these simple steps.

Here’s how to get an IP address for Vietnam:

2. Download and install the VPN app or browser extension, making sure to select the appropriate version for your device.

PrivateVPN emphasizes quality over quantity, with 200 self-owned servers strategically position throughout 60+ countries. You might think that this smaller network would cause issues but that’s not the case: PrivateVPN can reliably access streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer. Now, historically this service has had some issues keeping up with its competitors where performance is concerned. Still, after testing its Vietnamese server multiple times, I recorded an average speed of 51.92 Mbps. That’s not amazing but it’s several times the speed required for watching 4K video. Using a free VPN to get a Vietnam IP address

Free VPNs can seem like an easy way to enhance your privacy without paying. The truth is that most free providers don’t have servers in Vietnam and so won’t be able to get you a Vietnamese IP address. Aside from that, free VPNs have several major shortcomings, including low monthly bandwidth limits, a lack of customer support, and an almost guaranteed inability to access popular streaming platforms.

Aside from poor performance, free VPNs don’t protect your privacy as they should. Often this is because they lack the essential security features of paid VPNs, such as 256-bit AES encryption, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch. However, some free VPNs also carry malware, intentionally harming your online security. In some cases, free VPNs keep logs of your online activity. They may use your data to spam you with ads or even sell it to third parties.

Why you need a VPN for Vietnam

Vietnam has a history of internet censorship. Freedom House has consistently rated Vietnam as “Not Free” in Freedom on the Net. In its 2025 report, the advocacy group said that the country “enforced stringent controls on the country’s online environment and punished people for expressing their views online”.

Other ways to gain a Vietnam IP address

A VPN ensures your connection is safe and secure, making it the best way to get an IP address in Vietnam. That said, there are other options:

Proxy server — Proxy services such as SOAX, Evomi, MangoProxy, and NaProxy all offer IP addresses in Vietnam. Bear in mind, however, that your internet traffic will not be encrypted while using them. This means your ISP can find out which websites you visit.

Smart DNS — If you want an IP address in Vietnam solely for streaming, then a Smart DNS service could be useful. This redirects DNS requests so that they’re resolved in Vietnam rather than in your own country. This can be enough to trick streaming platforms into thinking that you’re in Vietnam. However, the vast majority of Smart DNS services only unblock US platforms.

Tor network — Tor is a network that lets you browse the internet anonymously by passing your traffic through a network of volunteer-maintained nodes. It ensures that your true location is hidden when visiting websites and performing other online activities.

By specifying an exit node in Vietnam, your traffic will join the wider internet from Vietnam, making it look like you’re based in the country. Unfortunately, choosing an exit node doesn’t always work. Even if it does, Tor speeds are very slow and only really suitable for general browsing.
