- Vietnam’s government heavily censors the internet, but it can still be helpful to have a Vietnamese IP address sometimes.
- VPNs make it possible to spoof your location and evade digital surveillance. That’s right: you can watch Vietnamese TV abroad without undermining privacy.
- I’ve performed extensive hands-on testing to find out which VPNs are best for getting a Vietnamese IP address.
- NordVPN is first choice. It boasts first-class speed and security plus apps that are easy enough for anyone to use.
Vietnam has extremely strict online restrictions and authorities routinely harass journalists and activists, using jail time and extrajudicial violence to discourage people from speaking up against the government. Rather than submit to widespread surveillance, it’s best to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to protect yourself. This also has the added advantage of allowing you to watch Vietnamese TV channels like ATV and VTV while traveling abroad, and to use public hotspots safely.
You might be wondering how a VPN works. It’s really quite simple: your data is encrypted and sent through a server in a location of your choosing. This hides all of your online activities and your real IP address from anyone monitoring the network. Once connected, it’ll appear as though you’re browsing from somewhere else entirely, removing any link between you and your online activities.
I’ll soon explain how to get a Vietnamese IP address using a VPN. Before that though, here’s a little information about the services that impressed me the most.
The best VPNs for getting a Vietnam IP address:
- NordVPN My top pick for getting an IP address for Vietnam! Fast and beginner-friendly, with a huge network and an incredible security offering. Includes a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try it risk-free.

How to get a Vietnam IP address
Getting a Vietnamese IP address is quicker and easier than you may think! No matter your location, the process is the same. Just follow these simple steps.
Here’s how to get an IP address for Vietnam:
- Choose and sign up for a VPN service. I recommend NordVPN.
- Download and install the VPN app or browser extension, making sure to select the appropriate version for your device.
- Open the VPN app or browser extension and connect to a server in Vietnam. This will change your IP address. If you’re currently in Vietnam and want to access content that is blocked in the country, you’ll need to select a server in the country where that content is available, such as the US.
- Try out the restricted site or service. It should now be unblocked!
- If you’re still having trouble, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies before reloading the page. You may also want to try connecting to another server. If all else fails, contact your VPN provider’s customer support team for help.
TRY THE TOP RATED VPN RISK FREE
NordVPN is offering a fully-featured risk-free 30-day trial if you sign up on this page. You can use the VPN rated #1 for a Vietnamese IP address with no restrictions for a month – great if you're going on a short trip.

How I found the best VPNs for a Vietnam IP address
You can’t get a Vietnamese IP address if your VPN doesn’t have servers in Vietnam. Of course, that’s just one small part of my testing. I considered five main areas when researching, testing, and scoring different VPN services. To rank highly providers had to excel in all of the areas below, rather than simply doing one thing very well.
- Network suitability: I started by checking how many server locations each provider had in Vietnam, as this gives an indication of the number of available IP addresses. I then evaluated their ability to unblock national streaming services in Vietnam, as well as the more stubborn international services.
- Speed: It’s all very well getting an IP address in Vietnam, but what if the resulting connection is too slow to use? I looked for the fastest providers by carrying out multiple speed tests while connected to their servers in Vietnam.
- Security and privacy: I only recommend VPNs that can provide users with adequate protection. My comprehensive evaluation involved testing them against 16 different security and privacy criteria.
- Ease of use: To find the most user-friendly services, I evaluated providers against 10 related metrics covering everything from the quality of their interfaces to the responsiveness of their customer support teams.
- Value for money: I love a good deal, and I’m sure you do too. To gauge which providers were worth what they charged, I used various criteria that took into account monthly fees as well as any discounts and free trials.
You can read more about how I tested my top VPNs in the methodology section below. But, for now, let’s take a closer look at the ones that made the grade.

NordVPN is the best option for gaining a Vietnam IP address. It has two Vietnamese locations (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh) and servers in 130+ countries. As such, it’s great for those looking to unblock geo-restricted content in Vietnam, Cambodia, or anywhere else. I was able to access stubborn platforms like BBC iPlayer, VTV, and Disney+, and torrenting is permitted too! Users can connect 10 devices at once and get help via NordVPN’s 24/7 live chat system.
I measured the speed of NordVPN’s Vietnamese servers multiple times over the course of a typical day. This provider did very well, delivering an average speed of 191.8 Mbps with around 8 Mbps of fluctuation across three tests. That’s one of the highest results I saw during testing, and it’s more than suitable for streaming live TV, making video calls, and playing online games.
The area where NordVPN excels most is undoubtedly security. That’s because it comes packed with advanced features like split tunneling support, an anti-censorship protocol named NordWhisper, ad and tracker-blocking, and Tor over VPN servers. Of course, NordVPN also boasts a strict no-logs policy, poweful encryption, and all of the safeguards you’d expect. With several ways to pay anonymously and the ability to beat China’s Great Firewall, you can stay safe, no matter where you go.
NordVPN apps are available for Windows, Android, MacOS, iOS, Linux, and Android TV. There are also browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need access to multiple server locations in Vietnam – servers in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
- You’re looking for superior speeds for streaming and gaming.
- You want a secure VPN with robust encryption, a no-logs policy, and multiple privacy features such as a kill switch and DNS leak protection.
- You want reliable access to geo-restricted content – worked with multiple international streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and BBC iPlayer.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want a VPN that optimizes and labels its servers by use case.
BEST VPN FOR VIETNAM:NordVPN is my first choice VPN. A huge network of around 9,000 high-speed servers in 130+ countries, including Vietnam. Securely access most region-locked websites and services such as Netflix. 24/7 support and a strict no-logs policy. NordVPN comes with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Surfshark is my top budget provider, and it’s easy to see why. For starters, it allows users to connect as many devices as they like, making it perfect for families traveling abroad. You’ll also be able to access services like Netflix, Hulu, and FTP Play since there are 4,500 servers spread throughout 100 different countries. All plans include 24-hour support and a Smart DNS service that can help you stream geo-blocked content on Smart TVs and games consoles.
I wanted to see what kind of performance Surfshark’s Vietnamese servers were capable of, and was pleasantly surprised when it took second place with an average speed of 181.86 Mbps. It was extremely consistent too, speeds only varying by 6 Mbps. In other words, it’s perfect for tasks where a stable connection is vital, such as play fast-paced games, watching live broadcasts, or video calling. Take a look:
Surfshark is based in the British Virgin Islands, where there are no mandatory data-retention laws and as such, refuses to keep any logs of your activities. It comes equipped with all of the security tools you’d expect, like unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and an independently-verified no-logging policy. If you’d like a little more control, you can get a static iP address or activate its ad and tracker-blocker, adult content filter, and censorship-beating NoBorders mode.
Surfshark apps are available for iOS, MacOS, Android, Windows, and Linux. There are Chrome and Firefox extensions but routers have to be configured manually.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a budget-friendly VPN that doesn’t compromise on quality.
- You want a provider that offers unlimited device connections, making it perfect for families or multiple devices.
- You want a VPN with great streaming compatibility.
- You’re looking for a user-friendly experience, easy-to-use apps and browser extensions, and 24/7 live chat support.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want access to all the advanced features without being prompted to upgrade.

Total VPN is a versatile and reliable provider with servers in 80+ countries including Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. You shouldn’t have any issues watching Vietnamese TV from abroad, and I can confirm that it works with Netflix and Prime Video too. I’d prefer if the five-connection limit was increased slightly, since many providers allow double this. On the plus side, Total VPN does offer 24/7 assistance over live chat now, previously relying entirely on a ticket system.
To make sure Total VPN could handle any day-to-day task, I ran performance tests on its Vietnamese servers using a 250 Mbps connection. As the table below shows, it had an average speed of 159.3 Mbps, with roughly 5 Mbps of variance throughout the day. That’s an exceptional result, well above what’s needed for most activities.
The main question is “can this VPN keep you safe” and I’m pleased to announce that the answer is a resounding yes. Total VPN uses unbreakable AES-256 encryption, combined with DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, and a no-logs policy, meaning your online activities remain your business and no one else’s. There’s also an obfuscated protocol called Hydra and a sophisticated split tunneling feature in case you’d like a little more control.
Total VPN offers novice-friendly apps for iOS, MacOS, Android, and Windows. Unfortunately, there’s no router or Linux support at the time of writing.
Buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for high-speed Vietnamese servers
- You need a VPN that can handle whatever you throw at it
- You’d like to get a VPN and antivirus app for one low price
- Security is important to you, but you don’t want to manually tweak settings
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want a provider with an extensive audit history
SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE:Total VPN is a fuss-free provider that takes care of security for you. Boasts a large network and the ability to access all kinds of region-locked sites. Annual subscriptions come with a 30-day money-back guarantee and there’s a 14-day guarantee if you choose a shorter plan.

ProtonVPN has a network that seems to grow daily, currently sitting at almost 20,000 servers in 145 countries. There are a dozen servers in Vietnam itself, and a stealth protocol in case you’re worried about government surveillance. ProtonVPN’s streaming abilities are top-notch too; I was able to access platforms that stump most other VPNs, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer. Up to 10 simultaneous connections are permitted and there’s 24/7 live chat, just in case.
My next challenge was to see whether ProtonVPN can keep up with your requirements. I tested it three times using a 250 Mbps connection, ending up with a result of 140.98 Mbps. For context, that’s quick enough for any day to day task so whether you’re hoping to stream or torrent anonymously, you’ll be just fine. There was only 8 Mbps of varaibility too, so it’s extremely consistent.
This service was created by the Proton Mail team, so it certainly has a strong pedigree. ProtonVPN excels in its own right though, offering unbreakable encryption and a wealth of other security features like tracker and ad-blocking, split tunneling functionality, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. Thanks to ProtonVPN’s audited no-logs policy, you don’t have to take its privacy claims at face value. Finally, it’s one of the only services that includes port forwarding as standard, meaning it’s perfect for anyone hoping to torrent or play games anonymously.
ProtonVPN has its own apps for Linux, MacOS, Windows, Android, and iOS. Additionally, there are manual router setup instructions on its website.
Buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for a secure, privacy-focused VPN with a proven no-logs policy.
- You want high-speed servers suitable for HD streaming and torrenting
- You need advanced features like split tunneling, port forwarding, and multi-hop connections, ideal for tech-savvy users.
- You want to consistently bypass censorship or access restricted content.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need a cheaper option – more expensive than other VPNs on this list.
- You’re looking for a beginner-friendly service, but advanced settings may be overwhelming for those new to VPNs.
FULLY FEATURED:ProtonVPN is a trusted and reliable VPN with many advanced features. It is perfect for users who want to torrent or bypass censorship in Vietnam. Has a constantly growing network and the ability to beat most online restrictions. Every paid plans comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN is a great introduction for anybody new to online security. That’s because it offers access to servers in 105 countries and sidesteps extreme censorship like it’s nothing. Regardless of whether you’re trying to communicate safely in Vietnam or just watch your favorite shows on VTV Go, FTP Play, Netflix, or Sky Go, ExpressVPN can handle it. Basic plans permit up to 10 simultaneous connections and come with a Smart DNS service plus 24/7 live chat-based support.
ExpressVPN usually does quite well in Comparitech’s speed tests but I specifically wanted to see how reliable its Vietnamese servers were. I needn’t have worried — ExpressVPN achieved an average speed of 132.44 Mbps with around 7 Mbps of fluctuation. In short, high bandwidth activities won’t pose much of a problem, with speeds virtually the same even at peak times like evenings or weekends.
One of the things I really liked about ExpressVPN is that it requires virtually no setup. Most of its security and privacy tools are already enabled, with content-blocking and split tunneling being the only things you’ll have to activate manually. That’s right: this service even obfuscates your data automatically so you can browse safely in Vietnam, China, or anywhere else. There’s a proven no-logs policy, a choice of connection protocols, quantum-resistant encryption, and support for crypto payments too, which should help give you some peace of mind.
ExpressVPN has three subscription tiers: Basic at $3.49/month, Advanced at $4.49/month, and Pro at $7.49/month. There are apps for Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS, and Android, plus a Smart DNS service and custom firmware for routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need fast, reliable connections for smooth streaming and gaming.
- You want a VPN with strong, pre-enabled security features
- You require a user-friendly experience – simple apps for all devices and solid 24/7 live chat support.
- You want to access a wide range of streaming services – like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for a cheaper option.
- You need more control over advanced features – simple app design may not satisfy those looking for detailed customization.
SECURE AND RELIABLE:ExpressVPN makes digital security simple, boasting unbreakable encryption and an audited no-logs policy. Won’t be stopped by online restrictions. Higher connection limits and lower prices than before, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee.

IPVanish is another phenomenal service with a network spanning 100+ countries and the ability to access geo-blocked platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video from abroad. That’s not all: unlike most of the competition, IPVanish can secure every device you own. While it doesn’t work in China, it does a great job of beating Vietnamese internet restrictions and provides 24/7 support over live chat. Torrenting is permitted on all three of this provider’s servers in Vietnam too.
You’re unlikely to experience unwanted interruptions while streaming, thanks to IPVanish’s consistently fast speeds. In my tests, the provider’s slowest and fastest speeds only varied by just 5 Mbps. Overall, IPVanish averaged 152.45 Mbps, which is plenty fast enough for streaming Vietnamese TV from abroad.
IPVanish keeps your online activities private using unbreakable encryption, a kill switch that stops sending data at the moment your connection drops, and protection against IPv6 and DNS leaks. It refuses to log anything that could personally identify you and has been audited multiple times. Better still, IPVanish offers advanced functionality like split tunneling, a link safety checker, ad and tracker-blocker, and an obfuscation feature that scrambles OpenVPN traffic.
IPVanish offers an Advanced plan, bundling its VPN with a terabyte of cloud storage and a remotely-accessible private browser. There are apps for iOS, Android, MacOS, and Windows, with manual setup needed for Linux devices and supported routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need unlimited device connections, allowing you to secure all your devices with a single account.
- You’re looking for consistent and fast speeds suitable for streaming and gaming, even during peak times.
- You want access to the advanced plan’s cloud storage and secure browser.
- You want to use a VPN with flexible connection options – supports multiple protocols and even offers traffic obfuscation for additional privacy.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want specialized servers for gaming or streaming
- You require consistent performance in heavily censored countries like China.
UNLIMITED CONNECTIONS:IPVanish lets you connect all of your devices, unblocks Vietnamese TV abroad, and refuses to keep any logs of your activities. In short, it’s a fast and versatile VPN that’s well worth trying. Annual plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost has more than 40 servers in Vietnam, with a network spanning 100 countries. Servers are explicitly labelled to let you know which task each is best-suited for (streaming, gaming, torrenting, and so on), so everyday usage should be simple and straightforward. If you need help, customer support is available 24 hours per day via live chat. Users can secure up to seven devices at the same time — just be aware that while CyberGhost works in Vietnam, it won’t in China.
To get a better understanding of this VPN’s performance, itested its Vietnamese servers at three different times of day. With all tests complete, I recorded an average speed of 130.98 Mbps, well above what’s required for live streaming TV, playing competitive online games, or downloading large files. Here are my full results:
This provider keeps you safe online using a combination of uncrackable encryption, leak protection, and a kill switch, not to mention its no-logs policy which has been independently-verified three times. CyberGhost can even block ads and trackers or connect on its own in certain situations. If you need a little more privacy, there is a basic obfuscation feature as well as multi-hop servers that encrypt your traffic a second time. Anonymous signup is possible if you pay with Bitcoin.
CyberGhost offers apps for Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS, as well as Amazon Fire Stick. Note that adding CyberGhost to Linux or your router requires manual configuration.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a VPN with over 40 servers in Vietnam.
- You need a reliable, fast VPN for streaming and gaming.
- You’re looking for easy-to-use apps – simple and user-friendly interfaces are great for beginners.
- You want knowledgeable 24/7 live chat support that responds quickly.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need advanced customization options – CyberGhost’s simplicity may feel limiting for advanced users.
- You want a VPN that works in China.
STRONG SECURITY:CyberGhost is another great value option to consider. Lots of servers, fast and consistent connections, and a high level of security. Use on up to seven devices simultaneously. Offers 24/7 live chat support. 45-day money-back guarantee.

PureVPN operates out of the British Virgin Islands, far from the prying eyes of Vietnamese authorities. It recently expanded its network to 6,500 servers in 90+ countries and has a five-year introductory offer that’s sure to appeal to anyone who wants long-term coverage at affordable prices. I can confirm that this VPN works with major apps like Netflix and Hulu, so streaming TV from Vietnam abroad isn’t likely to be an issue. Users may connect 10 devices at once and speak to support staff over live chat at any time, day or night.
After measuring PureVPN’s performance in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon, it had an average speed of 130.92 Mbps. That’s a highly-competitive result, especially when you consider there was just 5 Mbps of variance. So long as your base internet speeds are semi-decent, you should be able to handle any activity without any major issues. Here’s a closer look at PureVPN’s speed test results:
If you live in Vietnam, you can’t afford to compromise on security. Thankfully, PureVPN ensures your browsing habits can’t be read, obscuring them with AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, and protection against IPv6 and DNS leaks. There’s also a built-in tracker and ad-blocker, plus an independently-audited no-logging policy. All traffic is obfuscated by default and it’s possible to sign up without providing any genuine personal information if you pay in Bitcoin.
PureVPN apps are available for MacOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. Its website has instructions in case you want to manually install PureVPN on your router.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a cost-effective VPN with strong privacy features.
- You’d like to be able to connect lots of devices at the same time
- You want reliable streaming and compatibility with platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want advanced features like port forwarding without having to pay extra
- You want to try the fastest service on the market

| Vietnam speed testing | 1.0 |
PrivateVPN emphasizes quality over quantity, with 200 self-owned servers strategically position throughout 60+ countries. You might think that this smaller network would cause issues but that’s not the case: PrivateVPN can reliably access streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer. In fact, it even works in places with extreme censorship like Vietnam, China, and the UAE. Users can connect 10 devices at once and get help using the 24/7 live chat service.
Now, historically this service has had some issues keeping up with its competitors where performance is concerned. Still, after testing its Vietnamese server multiple times, I recorded an average speed of 51.92 Mbps. That’s not amazing but it’s several times the speed required for watching 4K video. If your connection is on the slower side, maybe look elsewhere but for everyone else, PrivateVPN is worth trying.
PrivateVPN, as the name suggests, is quite good at hiding your activities from snoopers such as your ISP or the government. It uses 128-bit AES encryption by default, though this can be raised to 256-bits for extra security. There’s also DNS and IPv6 leak protection, an application-specific kill switch, and a stealth mode which hides any signs of VPN usage. Using a free VPN to get a Vietnam IP address
Free VPNs can seem like an easy way to enhance your privacy without paying. The truth is that most free providers don’t have servers in Vietnam and so won’t be able to get you a Vietnamese IP address. Aside from that, free VPNs have several major shortcomings, including low monthly bandwidth limits, a lack of customer support, and an almost guaranteed inability to access popular streaming platforms.
Aside from poor performance, free VPNs don’t protect your privacy as they should. Often this is because they lack the essential security features of paid VPNs, such as 256-bit AES encryption, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch. However, some free VPNs also carry malware, intentionally harming your online security. In some cases, free VPNs keep logs of your online activity. They may use your data to spam you with ads or even sell it to third parties.
Why you need a VPN for Vietnam
Vietnam has a history of internet censorship. Freedom House has consistently rated Vietnam as “Not Free” in Freedom on the Net. In its 2025 report, the advocacy group said that the country “enforced stringent controls on the country’s online environment and punished people for expressing their views online”.
Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index ranks Vietnam in position 173 out of 190, noting that “independent reporters and bloggers are often jailed, making Vietnam one of the world’s biggest prisons for journalists”.
For these reasons, it’s extremely important to have a VPN when you’re in Vietnam, whether you’re living there permanently or just for a short stay.
A quality VPN can allow you to unblock geo-restricted content from all over the world. Indeed, the best VPNs allow you to unblock websites that have been banned by the Vietnamese government, as well as access Vietnamese websites and services from outside Vietnam. Finally, the strong security features of the best VPNs let you browse safely on public Wi-Fi in Vietnam without fear of being hacked.
Other ways to gain a Vietnam IP address
A VPN ensures your connection is safe and secure, making it the best way to get an IP address in Vietnam. That said, there are other options:
Proxy server — Proxy services such as SOAX, Evomi, MangoProxy, and NaProxy all offer IP addresses in Vietnam. Bear in mind, however, that your internet traffic will not be encrypted while using them. This means your ISP can find out which websites you visit.
Smart DNS — If you want an IP address in Vietnam solely for streaming, then a Smart DNS service could be useful. This redirects DNS requests so that they’re resolved in Vietnam rather than in your own country. This can be enough to trick streaming platforms into thinking that you’re in Vietnam. However, the vast majority of Smart DNS services only unblock US platforms.
Tor network — Tor is a network that lets you browse the internet anonymously by passing your traffic through a network of volunteer-maintained nodes. It ensures that your true location is hidden when visiting websites and performing other online activities.
By specifying an exit node in Vietnam, your traffic will join the wider internet from Vietnam, making it look like you’re based in the country. Unfortunately, choosing an exit node doesn’t always work. Even if it does, Tor speeds are very slow and only really suitable for general browsing.
Getting a Vietnam IP address: FAQs
How can I watch Vietnamese TV abroad with a VPN?
In order to watch Vietnamese TV outside Vietnam, you’ll need to use a VPN and connect to a server in Vietnam. Once connected, you’ll be able to unblock geo-restricted content such as Vietnamese TV and streaming services. Be sure to clear your browser’s cookies beforehand (this ensures the website or service you’re trying to access doesn’t remember your actual IP address).
An IP address for Vietnam lets you access content from Vietnam Television (VTV), the national television broadcaster of Vietnam. This includes channels such as VTV1, V2V24, and VTV7 Kids. You’ll also be able to unblock Vietnamese streaming services such as Phimmoi and Zing TV. Finally, a VPN with servers in other countries, such as the US and UK, allows you to stream movies and TV shows on Netflix US, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer.
Are VPNs legal in Vietnam?
While residents are subjected to extensive online censorship, the use of VPNs is legal in Vietnam. In fact, it’s very much recommended! The Vietnamese government claim restrictions are in place to protect its population from obscene content, though evidence suggests that it’s very quick to crack down on anything anti-government.
Banned content in Vietnam often consists of political websites and blogs. Vietnamese authorities have also successfully sought the removal of Facebook accounts and YouTube videos that were deemed to be critical of the state. From April to June 2018, independent news sites in Vietnam were hit with DDoS attacks.
Amnesty International has reported cases of internet activists being arrested in relation to their online activity. The most prominent example is that of blogger Hoang Duc Binh who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his coverage of the Formosa environmental disaster. In December 2018, the Communist Party of Vietnam introduced Force 47, a military unit of over 10,000 staff, with the intention, critics claim, of manipulating content online.
