Traveling abroad (outside Hungary) means you’ll no longer be able to watch some of your favorite content. After all, most major streaming sites tend to be region-locked. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution. By connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN), you can get a Hungarian IP address and regain access from anywhere.
So what is a VPN? Essentially, these services improve your online privacy by encrypting your data and sending it through a server somewhere else in the world. This lets you spoof your location and also prevents anyone from monitoring your activities, which is useful for travelers since they’re often more reliant on public Wi-Fi networks.
Below, we give detailed reviews of the best VPNs for getting a Hungarian IP address. If you don’t have time to read the whole post, here is a quick summary.
Best VPNs for getting a Hungary IP Address:
- NordVPN: The best VPN for a Hungarian IP address. Boasts strong security, impressive server speeds, and the ability to unblock a wide range of streaming services. Includes a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try it risk-free.
TIP In our testing we found that the cheapest NordVPN plan (Standard) works perfectly for Hungary. - Surfshark: Our top budget VPN for a Hungarian IP. Its high-speed Hungarian servers are ideal for uninterrupted streaming. No logs or connection limits. 24/7 support.

How to get a Hungarian IP address using a VPN
The good news is that it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to get a Hungarian IP address. Just follow this step-by-step guide, and you’ll be streaming Hungarian TV channels in minutes.
Here’s how to get an IP address for Hungary from anywhere:
- First, you’ll need to select and sign up with a VPN provider that offers servers in Hungary. We recommend NordVPN.
- Next, download and install the appropriate app for the device you’re using to access online content outside Hungary.
- Open the VPN app and connect to a Hungarian server. You’ll then have a Hungarian IP address for accessing geo-blocked content abroad.
- Now you can navigate to a geo-restricted website or service. It should now be accessible as though you were still in Hungary.

CyberGhost boasts a huge network, with 10,000 servers spanning 100+ countries. Around 60 of these are in Hungary. The provider also offers self-hosted NoSpy servers in neighboring Romania.

The provider is great for streaming and maintains a list of servers labeled with the platforms they work best with. We had no issues accessing US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu with the servers specified for them.

In our tests for this article, PureVPN’s average download speed was an impressive 146.31 Mbps. This is fast enough for any day-to-day task.
This VPN offers a high degree of protection without overcomplicating things. User traffic is secured using unbeatable encryption, a kill switch, and leak prevention, plus automatic tracker-blocking. Best of all, PureVPN has a strict no-logs policy meaning it can’t reveal details of your activities even if it wanted to. It’s also been audited four times – which is more than most other providers.

PureVPN has its own Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows, and Linux apps. Subscriptions allow up to 10 simultaneous connections. If you’d rather secure an entire network, you can follow manual setup instructions to get it running on your router.
Customer support staff are available 24 hours per day via live chat and while they occasionally take a few minutes to respond, they’re friendly, helpful, and willing to spend time helping to solve your problem.

ProtonVPN has a vast network of 12,000+ servers spanning 117 countries. It operates around 24 servers in Hungary, and allows users to choose between them rather than making the choice for them.

While connected to ProtonVPN’s servers in Hungary, we recorded an average speed of 152.09 Mbps. This is fast enough for streaming 4K video on six devices at the same time.
Further, this service can reliably access platforms that stump its competitors, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. There’s a generous 10-device limit, and support staff are on hand 24 hours per day to help with any issues.

If you’re interested in a custom security setup, you’re in the right place. ProtonVPN uses uncrackable encryption by default, prevents DNS and IPv6 leaks, blocks ads and trackers, and includes a kill switch, but that’s only the beginning. It also supports port forwarding and split tunneling and has specially designed Secure Core servers that are kept as far as possible from outside interference. You can even pay using Bitcoin or cash in case you’d like a little extra anonymity.
ProtonVPN apps are available for Android, Windows, Linux, MacOS, and iOS. This service also has setup guides explaining how to manually install it on your home router.

PrivateVPN owns and operates roughly 200 servers in 63 countries. Its server in Budapest, Hungary, works great with Hungarian TV. The provider’s US servers are ideal for Netflix, Disney Plus, and Hulu.

Speed-wise, PrivateVPN was slower than the other providers that we tested. Nevertheless, its overall average of 56.39 Mbps was fast enough for streaming in 4K on two devices at the same time (providing you have a decent base connection speed to start with). If you have slow broadband, we’d recommend opting for one of the other VPNs in this list.
This VPN follows a zero-logs policy, which is a great start. It also offers a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and 256-bit encryption with the option to reduce this to 128-bits for faster speeds. Users can let specific apps through the VPN or activate the stealth mode to get around particularly stubborn geo-blocking.

PrivateVPN allows ten simultaneous device connections and has apps available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux. While you can also use this VPN with select compatible routers, this requires following manual setup instructions.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want access to Hungarian and US content libraries like Netflix
- You want a lightweight, user-friendly VPN to stream Hungarian content
Don’t buy this VPN if:

- You need robust obfuscation to bypass geo-restrictions

Methodology: How we find the best VPNs for a Hungarian IP address
VPNs vary widely in quality, even though they sound remarkably similar when you browse their websites. To objectively assess them, we thoroughly tested each provider in the following key areas:
Network suitability
We started by checking which providers had servers in Hungary, as these are required to get a Hungarian IP address abroad. We then scored them on the number of countries they supported overall. Those with a good server spread are far more versatile. Finally, we scored them on their ability to access geo-restricted services in Hungary and elsewhere. We specifically focused on notoriously difficult-to-access platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer.
These scores were weighted and combined to generate overall scores out of 10 for comparison.
NordVPN’s score of 9.7 was highest. It has servers in more countries than any other provider that we know of. Furthermore, it worked with every streaming platform that we tried it with. ExpressVPN and Surfshark were the highest scoring alternatives.
Speed
If you’re looking to stream or torrent while using a Hungarian IP address, then you’ll need a quick connection. To find the fastest providers, we carried out three speed tests with each while connected to their servers in Hungary.
To better approximate the average user’s experience, we limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps (which is slightly lower than the median broadband speed in the US). Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app.
Once we had results for each provider, we averaged them and converted them to a score out of 10 relative to the other tested VPNs. This makes a meaningful side-by-side comparison possible.
NordVPN was the fastest provider overall. It’s the best option for those with slow connection speeds or those who plan to regularly stream, game or torrent while connected. Surfshark, with a score of 9.2, is the next-best option.
Security and privacy
For maximum protection, we’ve only recommended providers with a zero-logs policy, an uncrackable layer of encryption, leak protection, and a kill switch. This is just a starting point, though. We also looked for additional features that could shield your online activity — these are outlined in the table below.
Feature | NordVPN | Surfshark | IPVanish | ExpressVPN | CyberGhost | PureVPN | Proton VPN | PrivateVPN |

Each test metric was assigned a score, which we combined to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider.
NordVPN and Surfshark each scored 9.5. Both providers use RAM-only servers in their networks and protect user-generated data using strong encryption. Furthermore, they have no-logs policies that have been independently audited multiple times. ProtonVPN is a great alternative, though it doesn’t work in China. NordVPN and Surfshark, however, do.
Ease of use
It’s vital that everyone has access to digital security tools. That’s why we looked for providers with user-friendly apps and live chat-based customer support. You can see the other metrics we used to gauge overall user-friendliness in the table below.

Using a VPN to gain a Hungarian IP address: FAQs
Why might I need an IP address for Hungary?
One of the most common reasons for getting a Hungarian IP address is to access geo-restricted content. For example, you may find that Hungarian TV channels such as RTL Klub and TV2 are unavailable abroad. You may even find that you need a Hungarian IP address to access your online bank account and prevent the foreign login attempt from being incorrectly flagged as fraudulent. Whatever the case, using a VPN to get an IP address for Hungary can help.
If you’re in Hungary and want to improve your online security while still being able to access your home websites and services, a Hungarian IP address can also help in this respect. That’s because the new, temporary IP address isn’t linked to your identity. Furthermore, VPNs offer a number of security features that further protect your online privacy. This is particularly useful when you’re connecting to public wifi hotspots which are especially vulnerable to hackers and snoopers.
Are VPNs legal in Hungary?
The good news is that VPNs are legal in Hungary. In fact, you can safely use a VPN in most countries which is great if you’re traveling abroad. We have a full list of where VPNs are legal and where they’re banned. Countries such as China and Russia have cracked down on VPNs in recent years, but otherwise, VPNs remain viable almost everywhere.
Disclaimer: Although we’ve spent hours researching this topic, we are not legal experts. As such, nothing we’ve said above should be taken as legal advice. We encourage you to consult local laws or perhaps even seek a professional’s opinion before attempting to use a VPN if you’re unsure whether they’re legal.
Can I use a free VPN to get a Hungarian IP address?
It’s possible to get a Hungarian IP address with a free VPN but we’d advise against it. To begin with, they tend to have slow speeds and restrictive monthly bandwidth caps, plus they’re easily detected by major streaming platforms like Netflix.
To make matters worse, these services usually aren’t great where privacy is concerned. Over the years, we’ve seen free VPNs lie about the kind of logs they keep, sell user’s excess bandwidth, and even make money from your data. Instead, you’d be better served by a reputable paid VPN.
