How to watch Netflix España (Netflix Spain) abroad with a VPN

Netflix España (or Netflix Spain) may not measure up to other countries’ catalogs of TV shows and movies, but there are still some gems to be found. Unfortunately for Spanish subscribers, many of these are unavailable in other countries’ libraries. Still getting the Netflix proxy error? Try this:

If you’ve subscribed to one of the VPNs we recommended in this article but still get the Netflix proxy error when you try to watch a video, try the following steps:

1. If you’re logged into any Google accounts, including the one on Chrome browser, log out of them. Google caches IP addresses, which can reveal your actual location.
2. Disable GPS and any other location services on your computer, smartphone, or browser. If you’ve given Netflix permission to see your location in the past, you’ll need to toggle this off in your browser settings.
3. Clear your browser’s cookies, cache, and temp files. Learn how to clear your cache here, and how to clear your cookies here.
4. Disable IPv6. This is particularly useful for Windows 10 users. You can turn IPv6 off on your Wi-Fi Properties (see video below). You may need to restart your device afterward.
5. Flush your DNS cache. In Windows, run Command Prompt in Administrator mode and type ipconfig /flushdns
6. Change your device’s time zone to that of the country whose Netflix library you’re trying to access.
7. If you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and have access to the router, rename the Wi-Fi network (SSID). Append “_nomap” at the end (no quotes). For example: “comparitech_nomap”. This will opt your Wi-Fi network out of Google’s geolocation services. You will need to reconnect your device to the new network in order to regain internet access.
8. Disconnect and reconnect to the selected server location to obtain a new IP address.

Methodology: Finding the best VPNs for Netflix Spain

You can’t just use any VPN to securely access Netflix Spain. In fact, very few work reliably with this content library. To make matters worse, some are simply too slow to be of any real use. To make sure you get a suitably versatile service, we tested providers in the following areas:

Network suitability

Without Spanish servers, you can’t get a Spanish IP address and can’t access Spanish services. We looked for VPNs with servers in multiple Spanish cities. We then tested providers’ ability to access Netflix ES as well as other popular Netflix libraries, such as those of the US and Japan. Finally, as most people use more than one streaming service, we tested providers with other big-name platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.

The scores for the above were weighted and then combined to generate overall scores for comparison.

Surfshark’s score of 9.6 out of 10 was highest. It has servers in three Spanish cities and works seamlessly with a huge number of Netflix regions and streaming services. NordVPN is also a great option — particularly for access to multiple Netflix libraries.

Speed

Streaming uses quite a bit of bandwidth, so decent speeds are essential. We carried out multiple speed tests for each provider to determine which VPNs were the fastest. These involved connecting to their servers in Spain and measuring download speeds — using the Ookla speed-testing app — in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon.

To more closely emulate the average user’s experience, we rate-limited the base connection speed of our test machine to 250 Mbps (which is roughly the median fixed broadband speed in the US). 

To make a side-by-side comparison easier, the results for each provider were averaged and converted to a score out of 10 relative to the other tested VPNs. 

NordVPN was the fastest provider overall, and your best bet for streaming Netflix Spain without interruption. Surfshark was also particularly quick, with an overall score of 9.3 out of 10.

Security and privacy

VPNs are designed to keep you safe, so we can’t compromise on security. At a minimum, we required providers to have 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks, plus a no-logging policy. You can see the other features we looked for in the table below.
