There are many reasons you might need a Spanish IP address when outside of Spain. Whether you just want to watch Netflix España, Telecinco, or La 1 online, or access your Banco Santander or BBVA online banking without tripping automated fraud detection measures, you could benefit from having a Spanish IP address. In this post, we’ll explain how you can use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access all your usual Spanish services from anywhere in the world.
How to obtain a Spanish IP address
Even if you’re new to using a VPN, obtaining a Spanish IP address is very simple.
Here’s how to get a Spanish IP address:
- First, register with a suitable VPN provider (we recommend ExpressVPN).
- Download the VPN app, making sure you get the appropriate version for your device’s operating system.
- Once installed, log in to the VPN app.
- Connect to one of the available Spanish servers.
- Try to access a Spanish geo-blocked website. It should load without any errors, but you might have to refresh the page first.
You can check your IP address here.
What does a VPN do?
When you connect to a VPN, all of your traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel. This prevents anyone without the encryption key (like hackers or your internet service provider) from intercepting your traffic and finding out what you’re doing online.
The other major advantage to using a VPN is the ability to connect to servers all over the world. When you connect to a Spanish server, you’re given a temporary Spanish IP address. This is what geo-restricted websites look at to determine if you’re in the required country or not. Since you now appear to be in Spain, you’ll be able to access the vast majority of geo-restricted Spanish sites and services, even if you’re in the US, UK, France, Germany, or anywhere else abroad.
We provide a lot of detail on each of the VPN providers below, but in case you can’t stick around to the end of the post, here’s our list of the best VPNs for getting an IP address in Spain:

Can I get a Spanish IP address with a free VPN?
It is technically possible to get a Spanish IP address with a free VPN, but we advise against using one. For a start, these services often have more concurrent users than their servers can support. This leads to extremely slow speeds, which in turn causes frequent stuttering and long buffering times when streaming even low-resolution video. It’s also worth noting that most major websites and services upgrade their geo-restriction measures regularly; premium VPNs usually have the resources to find a workaround, but free services often don’t.
Every business exists to make a profit, and free VPNs are no exception. Sometimes, they’ll offer to upgrade your speeds or increase your data allowance for a price, but mostly, this is done by injecting ads into the sites you visit. Some services go even further, and use tracking cookies to keep track of your browsing habits. This is extremely valuable information for advertisers, and free VPNs can easily sell it to them without your knowledge. VPNs are designed to prevent anonymous third parties from getting hold of your personal information, but when you use a free VPN, this is exactly what can happen.
It’s far more difficult to find a safe, secure, free VPN than you might think. In 2015, researchers found that the Google Play Store was inundated with malware-ridden or otherwise unsafe free VPN apps. Even well-known services have their risks; Hola was found to be selling user bandwidth to help run a botnet that very same year. To keep yourself and your personal information safe, we recommend using a VPN with a proven history of standing up for its users’ privacy.
Can I use a VPN to watch Spanish TV abroad?
When connected to one of your VPN’s Spanish servers, you’ll be able to access a huge range of geo-locked Spanish platforms. This includes services like Netflix España, RTVE, Telecinco, and Antena 3. Without a VPN, viewers outside of Spain will often see an error message saying “This content is not available in your location”, but often it’s more vague, as with Telecinco’s “Ha habido un error – Por favor, inténtalo de nuevo más tarde” (“An error has occurred – Please try again later”).
You should note that a VPN does not provide free access to subscription services. If you’re currently abroad but usually live in Spain, you’ll still be able to access these with a VPN, and even sign up using your regular credit card or PayPal account. However, some streaming platforms require the user’s payment method to be linked to an address in the broadcast area, so it’s all but impossible for non-Spanish residents to sign up.
