- Samsung Smart TVs don’t support VPN apps. To access geo-blocked content, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or use a Smart DNS service.
- I’ve personally tested over 80 leading providers with the goal of finding the best VPNs for Samsung TVs. This meant examining their speed, security, and more.
- NordVPN is my first choice VPN for Samsung Smart TVs. It’s quick, beginner-friendly, and highly-secure, with exceptional streaming capabilities.
You might think that there’s little benefit to using a VPN with your Samsung Smart TV. After all, most people don’t use the built-in browser for anything significant and nobody’s interested in finding out what shows you’re watching… right? The truth is that major service providers regularly throttle the speeds of customers who stream frequently, and that every scrap of information about your browsing habits is valuable data that can be sold to advertisers or used to market products to you directly. That’s why using a VPN (which enhances anonymity by encrypting traffic) is a great idea.
Now, there is one problem. Samsung TVs run on the Tizen operating system and don’t support traditional VPN apps. I’ll cover several workarounds including installing a VPN on your router, sharing an encrypted connection from another device, and using a Smart DNS service to unblock content without the privacy benefits of a VPN. Before that, though, here’s a quick overview of my top Samsung Smart TV VPNs.
The best VPNs for Samsung Smart TV:
- NordVPN The best VPN for Samsung Smart TV. Boasts 9,000+ servers in 130 countries and extensive router setup documentation. No-logs service with 24/7 live chat and a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try it risk-free.TIP In our testing we found that the cheapest NordVPN plan (Standard) works perfectly for Samsung TV.
- Surfshark Best value VPN for Smart TVs. Very fast speeds and no connection limits. Works with most streaming services and delivers powerful security features including a stealth mode. Affordable yet versatile.
- ProtonVPN This zero-logs VPN has first-class streaming ability and a truly expansive network. Stellar reputation on privacy, with 24/7 customer support.
- ExpressVPN Has its own router app and Smart DNS service, making safe streaming nice and simple. Good set of security tools plus the ability to beat country-wide censorship in places like China.
- IPVanish A reputable, speedy provider that works flawlessly with Netflix and similar platforms. Secure any number of devices using its robust privacy toolkit.
- CyberGhost Perfect for anyone new to VPNs. Tells you which servers are best for streaming but doesn’t neglect privacy or performance. Smart DNS included.
- Private Internet Access Highly-customizable VPN with unlimited connections, lots of powerful privacy tools, and great unblocking ability. Doesn’t keep logs.
- PrivateVPN Anonymity-focused VPN with exceptional unblocking ability. Simple enough for new users but offers 24/7 support and anti-censorship tools.

How I found the best Samsung Smart TV VPNs
Since it’s not possible to install a VPN on a Samsung TV directly, you’ll need one with router support (or desktop apps, if you wanted to share your connection from a second device). To find the best VPN providers for Samsung Smart TVs, I personally tested each candidate, evaluating it on speed, streaming ability, and much more. Below, you’ll find a short overview of what I was looking for:
- Speed: To find the fastest and most consistent providers, I tested each VPN at three different times of day, using a 250 Mbps connection and the quickest-available US server.
- Streaming features: I hunted for VPNs offering manual router setup guides, Smart DNS services, and impressive unblocking ability. This involved checking to see which VPNs worked best with apps like Hulu, Disney+, and Peacock.
- Value for money: Some VPNs aren’t worth what they charge. To get you the best deal, I gauged each VPN service’s overall worth using several criteria including how many connections they allow and how often they go on sale.
- Security and privacy: Security is the entire point of using a VPN, which is why I prioritized services that go the extra mile. Overall, providers were scored using nearly a dozen privacy-related metrics.
- Ease of use: Ideally, you’d be up and running as soon as possible. VPNs with detailed router setup guides, robust streaming abilities, and 24/7 support tend to score highly, but anything that streamlines your experience is a huge plus.
Want to know more? You can read about my testing process and see the results of those tests in the methodology section below. But first, let’s take a closer look at the providers that impressed me.

NordVPN is my top VPN for Samsung Smart TVs. Its website offers step by step instructions for manually setting up routers and for using a VPN with a Smart TV. With 9,000 servers in nearly 130 countries, you’ll have plenty of options for what to watch and I can confirm NordVPN works flawlessly with platforms like BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix. Live chat-based support is available 24 hours per day and up to 10 devices can be secured at the same time.
NordVPN’s speeds are excellent. While connected to the provider’s US servers, I recorded an average download speed of 202.07 Mbps. This is fast enough to stream 4K video on a dozen devices at once with no lag, and there was minimal variation throughout the day so you can count on super-fast speeds even during peak times.
One of the best things about NordVPN is that it offers an expansive set of privacy tools. To begin with, there’s 256-bit ChaCha20 encryption (or AES encryption if you’re using the OpenVPN protocol), a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection. NordVPN has been audited to show it doesn’t keep logs but if you’re looking for even greater protection, you can take advantage of its ad and tracker-blocking tools, censorship-beating NordWhisper protocol, oir multi-hop servers. This VPN accepts crypto payments and gift cards too, making it easy to sign up anonymously.
In addition to being router-compatible, NordVPN also offers apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV. You’ll also have the option of using browser extensions (available for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge).
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a VPN fast enough for uninterrupted 4K streaming
- You’d like a service that works with lots of international streaming platforms
- Security is one of your top concerns
- You are looking for router compatibility with both detailed setup tutorials and pre-configured routers available.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You are looking for a VPN with servers optimised for streaming

Surfshark is the best budget VPN for Samsung TVs. It has 4,500 servers spread across 100 countries and is one of the only major providers with no connection limit. I’ve had great results using this service with stubborn region-locked platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu but torrenting is also allowed on any server. Support staff are on-hand day and night in case you need help setting up the Smart DNS service, getting connected, or anything else.
To get a better understanding of this provider’s performance, I tested its American servers in the morning, at midday, and in the afternoon. Surfshark achieved an average speed of 200.05 Mbps with an unnoticeable 4 Mbps of fluctuation. In practice, this means you shouldn’t have any issues when taking part in data-intensive activities like downloading large files, video calling, or watching live broadcasts.
Surfshark takes good care of your data, shielding it from snoopers using unbreakable encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a kill switch. That’s far from its only security features though; there’s also automatic ad and tracker-blocking, a Stealth mode capable of beating extreme censorship, multi-hop servers, and a tool that filters out various types of adult content. Notably, Surfshark has a proven no-logs policy, meaning you don’t have to worry about anyone seeing what you get up to.
Apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV. It also offers manual setup guides for a wide range of router firmware.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a budget-friendly VPN that doesn’t compromise on service.
- You’d like a provider with unlimited device connections, perfect for large households or multi-device streaming.
- You need a VPN with very fast speeds for smooth 4K streaming on multiple devices at once.
- You want extra features like MultiHop servers for more privacy.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You are looking for a VPN that provides specialized streaming features (like dedicated Netflix servers).
- You want a VPN with more server locations (Surfshark has servers in 100 countries, but some other VPNs have larger networks).
BEST VALUE VPN:Surfshark is the best low-cost VPN. Delivers impressive speeds, allows any number of connections, and works with most popular streaming platforms. All plans come with access to 24/7 live chat and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

ProtonVPN was developed by the team behind Proton Mail, and has the same focus on privacy. Users can choose from servers in almost 130 countries, connect up to 10 devices at the same time, and securely access platforms like BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, and Disney+, from anywhere in the world. Just be aware that this VPN doesn’t work in places like China. If you’re experiencing issues anywhere else, staff are ready to provide one-on-one assistance via ProtonVPN’s 24/7 live chat system.
Streaming requires a stable, high-speed connection, so I wanted to make sure ProtonVPN’s performance was up to scratch. After a full day of testing, this VPN delivered an average speed of 173.82 Mbps, only varying by around 12 Mbps. That’s well above what’s needed for uninterrupted playback, gaming, video calls, or torrenting. Here’s a breakdown of its speeds at different times of day:
ProtonVPN doesn’t compromise on privacy. It follows a strict zero-logs policy (as verified by its multiple external audits), uses unbreakable encryption, and prevents DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks. There’s also a built-in kill switch that stops sending data if your connection drops suddenly. ProtonVPN has lots of advanced options too, including a stealth protocol, ad and tracker-blocker, and support for split tunneling and port forwarding. This last feature often costs extra, so it’s great to see it included as standard.
ProtonVPN has apps for Android, iOS, MacOS, Linux, and Windows. Its website also offers detailed, step-by-step guides to help you manually install it on most routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You’d like a VPN with a proven track record on privacy
- You want access to over 15,000 servers
- You’d like to be able to use almost any streaming platform
- You’d prefer to be able to customize your VPN’s settings
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for the cheapest VPN on the market
- You’re a beginner who might find the advanced features overwhelming
IDEAL FOR STREAMING:ProtonVPN has servers specifically designed for watching TV securely. It’s also extremely quick, has a strong focus on privacy, and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans.

ExpressVPN would be a fantastic choice for any Samsung Smart TV. That’s because it has its own router apps that preserves most of its advanced functionality, a Smart DNS tool called MediaStreamer, and the ability to bypass even the toughest online restrictions (whether it’s beating censorship or just streaming Netflix abroad). ExpressVPN’s network covers 105 countries and there’s 24/7 customer support just in case you run into any problems. Between 10 and 14 devices can be protected simultaneously, depending on which subscription tier you choose.
I personally measured ExpressVPN’s performance three times using a 250 Mbps connection and its quickest-available US servers. This VPN achieved an average speed of 135.74 Mbps, which is highly-competitive and enough for bandwidth-heavy activities like torrenting or watching live TV. Notably, there was just 6 Mbps of variance throughout the day, making it one of the most consistent providers around.
Novice users will appreciate that ExpressVPN takes care of security for them, automatically obfuscating your traffic as needed and hiding your activities using unbreakable encryption. This is backed up by an ad and tracker-blocking tool, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a kill switch, as well ExpressVPN’s audited no-logging policy. Unlike most other providers, ExpressVPN works in China, the UAE, and other regions with oppressive digital censorship, so you can trust that your privacy is in good hands.
Aside from offering custom router firmware, ExpressVPN has Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV apps. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge browser extensions are available for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a router-friendly VPN with custom firmware for easy setup
- You want a VPN with a proven ability to access international streaming platforms on Samsung Smart TV
- You prefer a VPN with a strong no-logs policy and strong security
- You want knowledgeable, 24/7 live chat-based support
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You are looking for a budget-friendly option – priced higher than many competitors
- You’re looking for a VPN with a lot of customizable features
ROUTER FIRMWARE:ExpressVPN offers custom firmware for routers but also includes a Smart DNS proxy. You’ll find servers in 105 countries, excellent customer support, and strong security. ExpressVPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

IPVanish has a lot to offer anyone interested in streaming. This VPN has 3,200 servers in 100+ countries and works perfectly with notoriously difficult-to-unblock services like Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer. Its apps are beginner-friendly yet packed with powerful features and if you need help, you can chat to staff directly. The best thing about IPVanish, in my opinion, is that it has completely scrapped connection limits and now lets you protect as many devices as you like.
My next task was testing IPVanish’s performance. Now, I was able to perform a wide range of activities while connected, including torrenting, watching live TV, and gaming, so I knew this service must be reasonably quick. IPVanish delivered an average speed of 193.37 Mbps, making it one of the three fastest Samsung TV VPNs. It was reliable too, speeds barely slowing down at all during peak times.
IPVanish has been working hard to improve its security offering lately. Just recently, it added support for multi-hop servers that encrypt your data twice as well as a link safety-checker. This in in addition to its 256-bit encryption, kill switch, leak protection, and automatic tracker and ad-blocking. IPVanish has even been audited to show that it’s telling the truth about its no-logging policy. There is an OpenVPN scrambling option too and while this can bypass some VPN-detection systems, it’s unfortunately not strong enough to get around country-wide censorship.
Users can see the available server locations on the app’s dashboard.IPVanish’s Advanced subscription offers the VPN itself, a cloud-based, privacy-focused browser, and a terabyte of secure online storage. Best of all, this only costs around a dollar more than the Essential plan.
This VPN offers manual setup guides for routers and Linux systems. It also has apps for Windows, MacOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, and iOS.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a VPN that allows you to secure every device on your home network
- You prefer fast and reliable speeds suitable for 4K streaming
- You’d like a VPN with router compatibility, including the option to purchase a pre-configured router
- You want a VPN that owns its own servers for added security
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want a VPN based outside of the US for privacy reasons
- You’re looking for a VPN that accepts cryptocurrency for added anonymity.
UNLIMITED DEVICES:IPVanish is very fast and has no connection limit, meaning it’s ideal for families. Detailed router setup guides, powerful security tools, and a proven zero-logs policy. Annual subscriptions include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost is an intuitive, easy to use VPN with servers in more than 100 countries. Unlike most other providers, this one can continue blocking ads and trackers even when installed on a router, and it actually tells you which servers are best for unblocking your favorite streaming apps abroad (though there’s also a Smart DNS service included). Customers have access to 24/7 support over live chat and can connect up to seven devices at the same time.
I tested CyberGhost’s performance by running three speed tests on its American servers while using a 250 Mbps connection. This VPN returned an average speed of 129.07 Mbps with 9 Mbps of difference between its highest and lowest results. In real terms, this means you’ll be able to watch Disney+, play fast-paced online games, and download large files without any noticeable slowdown, stuttering, or lag.
CyberGhost keeps you safe online using a kill switch, 256-bit ChaCha20 encryption (which experts agree is uncrackable), and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. There’s a strict no-logs policy in place, as evidenced by this VPN’s extensive audit history. CyberGhost’s more advanced features include tracker and ad-blocking, a smart rules feature for automating connections, and random port connection. You can also choose to allow certain apps to bypass its encryption if you’d like.
This VPN has its own Android, MacOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV apps. There are also manual setup guides for routers, plus extensions for Chrome and Firefox.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want to simplify your experience using task-specific servers
- You’re looking for a speedy, logless VPN
- You prefer a VPN with router compatibility and a pre-configured router option to make setup easier
- You’d like a privacy-conscious VPN with automatic wifi protection
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need a VPN that works in countries with strict online censorship, like China
- You need a more specialized streaming setup, or access to advanced features
VAST SERVER NETWORK:CyberGhost stands out by offering task-specific servers, high speeds, and a large server network, as well as powerful privacy tools. What’s more, every subscription comes with a generous 45-day money-back guarantee.

Private Internet Access provides router setup guides on its website, but it also comes with its own Smart DNS service in case you’d rather start streaming as quickly as possible. On that note, PIA works perfectly with major apps like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Amazon Prime Video. You don’t have to worry, even if you have lots of devices to protect, since this VPN doesn’t have a connection limit. Customer support is available at any time over live chat.
I decided to check the speed of Private Internet Access’ American servers, testing them at various times of day. This VPN delivered an average speed of 75.62 Mbps, which is decent, even if it isn’t the highest result I’ve seen. However, there was 30 Mbps of variance, which means your speeds can vary by around 40 percent. That’s higher than I’d like, but you shouldn’t struggle with everyday tasks like watching TV.
This service boasts an exceptional security toolkit. To begin with, it uses unbreakable AES encryption, a kill switch that’ll prevent you from browsing without protection following an outage, and protection against IPv6 and DNS leaks. Private Internet Access refuses to log any details of your activities and has been audited to prove it. There are plenty of advanced features built-in as well, such as its port forwarding support, combined ad and tracker-blocker, and stealth protocol.
Apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Amazon Fire TV. Furthermore, browser extensions are offered for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a VPN with Smart DNS to unblock content on your Samsung Smart TV easily, without router setup.
- You want to be able to connect every device you own
- You’re looking for a service with an expansive set of privacy tools
- You are looking for a cost-effective VPN with servers in 91 countries.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need faster speeds for 4K streaming and smooth video playback.
- You require a VPN that works well in restrictive countries like China.
GREAT FOR STREAMING:Private Internet Access is perfect for watching TV abroad. Comes with its own Smart DNS service, can secure any number of devices, and refuses to compromise on security. 30-day money-back guarantee.

PrivateVPN is a reliable, well-respected provider with 200 self-owned servers in 63 countries. That might not sound like much, but PrivateVPN makes up for it with exceptional unblocking ability. As well as beating China’s Great Firewall, this VPN can reliably access geo-blocked services like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu from abroad. Users can secure 10 devices at the same time and get help using PrivateVPN’s 24/7 live chat service.
This provider has never been the fastest on the market, but I’ve never encountered a task it couldn’t handle. Following a day of testing its American servers, PrivateVPN returned an average speed of 52.59 Mbps with roughly 7 Mbps of fluctuation. If you’re on a slower internet connection, you might want to consider a quicker service but for anyone else, PrivateVPN should be more than suitable.
This service uses 128-bit AES encryption by default, with the option to raise this to 256-bit for even greater security. PrivateVPN prevents DNS and IPv6 leaks, uses a kill switch to ensure you’re always protected, and follows a strict no-logs policy. Additionally, it’s one of the few providers that supports split tunneling and port forwarding as standard. There’s even a stealth mode capable of getting around the world’s most oppressive online restrictions. I’d like to see PrivateVPN introduce its own tracker-blocking feature or support for anonymous payment methods, though.
In addition to providing manual router setup guides, PrivateVPN has apps for Windows, Android, MacOS, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV. Like routers, Linux devices must be manually configured.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a no-logs VPN with strong privacy features
- You’re looking for a simple setup with easy-to-use apps and router support
- You want a VPN that unblocks a variety of streaming services including Netflix
- You like the sound of remote assistance
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for a VPN with a larger network
- You need a high-speed service with its own ad-blocker
SEAMLESS STREAMING:PrivateVPN supports routers and offers a good blend of versatility and privacy. This novice-friendly VPN is easy to use and works with most streaming apps. Includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to use a Smart DNS service with a Samsung TV (Tizen OS)
If you’re not worried about privacy, you can access geo-blocked streaming apps quickly and easily using a Smart DNS service. Below, I’ll explain how to set up Smart DNS on your Samsung TV.
Here’s how to set up a Smart DNS with Tizen OS:
- Sign up for a reputable VPN that has its own Smart DNS service (I recommend NordVPN).
- Log into your VPN’s website and locate the Smart DNS options. Make a note of the two addresses provided — you’ll need these in a moment.
- Turn on your Samsung Smart TV and press the Home (menu) button on your remote.
- Navigate through Settings > General > Network > Network Status > IP Settings.
- Select DNS setting and Enter manually. Simply put the two addresses from earlier into the Primary and Secondary DNS fields.
- You should now be able to access content that’s not normally available in your location! Just be aware that most Smart DNS services only provide access to US content (though there are some that support other countries too).

Best VPNs for Samsung Smart TV: FAQs
Can I use a free VPN with Samsung Smart TV?
Most free VPNs aren’t router compatible. Besides, they fall short in several other areas, limiting your bandwidth, offering sluggish speeds, and usually struggling to access popular streaming services like BBC iPlayer at all.
Aside from the performance issues, free VPNs also tend to provide minimal (or in some, nonexistent) protection. One study showed that almost 40 percent of free VPNs for iOS leaked personally-identifiable information, with 70 percent using HTTP instead of the more secure HTTPS protocol. If you’d like to be able to browse and stream anonymously, free VPNs are best avoided.
Will a VPN slow my connection on my Samsung Smart TV?
It’s to be expected that a VPN will slow your connection somewhat. This is down to the encryption and re-routing of data that takes place. Fortunately, the difference needn’t be noticeable, provided you use one of the best (and fastest) VPNs for Samsung TV. These VPNs are all more than fast enough for streaming in 4K and all offer unlimited bandwidth so there’s no limit to how much you can stream content on your Samsung Smart TV.
Can I use a Smart DNS instead of a VPN router?
If configuring a VPN connection on your wifi router seems a little too complicated, there’s also the option of using a Smart DNS proxy service. Several of the VPNs listed above offer this, providing another way for you to bypass content restrictions.
It’s important to understand the distinction, though. Smart DNS services don’t encrypt your data or enhance your privacy at all — they just provide access to geo-blocked content (and usually, only American platforms). VPNs, on other hand, can make it seem like you’re browsing from 60+ countries and simultaneously make it more difficult for anyone to tell what you get up to online.
A Smart DNS with your Samsung Smart TV, as opposed to a VPN router, offers faster speeds as well as quicker and easier setup. However, those benefits come at the cost of the connection not being encrypted. In contrast, a VPN will encrypt your data and hide your IP address, making it more security and privacy-friendly.
Are there any other ways to use a VPN with Samsung Smart TV?
Aside from installing a VPN via a wifi router or a Smart DNS service, it’s possible to share a VPN connection with your Samsung Smart TV. This can be achieved through Windows connection sharing or by setting up a virtual hotspot.
Don’t worry! This might sound complicated but Comparitech has a guide explaining how to set up a VPN for Smart TV. This will walk you through the process of sharing your VPN connection over Ethernet or wifi, step by step.
