TikTok uses a combination of automated systems and human oversight (manual review) to check accounts. It does this to ensure that young people, under the age of 18, are not being exposed to content that is meant for adults.

TikTok’s analysis primarily revolves around automated content filters. These systems scan videos, captions, comments, and account behavior (engagement patterns) for signs that the account belongs to a minor.

Automation also uses AI to analyze the videos you upload. This allows facial recognition systems to make decisions about your age. Another possible route to age restrictions is a report from another user, or sudden changes in visibility, such as a video going viral.

When automated systems detect a minor, TikTok may initiate a manual review. At this time, features such as TikTok Live (Go Live), direct messaging, or monetization tools may temporarily be blocked. The account may also be put in Restricted Mode to prevent the user from being exposed to content unsuitable for their age.

United Kingdom

In the UK, TikTok uses age verification to comply with the Online Safety Act (2023). The law requires platforms to prevent minors from accessing age-restricted content and features. This is why TikTok introduced stricter AI age estimation, selfie-based checks, and additional account restrictions for users in Britain.

European Union

TikTok applies age verification across Europe to comply with regional digital safety and data-protection rules. These regulations require platforms to protect children and allow the use of AI age estimation or ID-based checks.

Germany

Germany has one of the strictest legal frameworks to limit minors’ exposure to adult content. France

Switzerland

TikTok applies age-verification measures to comply with the Federal Act on the Protection of Minors in the Film and Video Game Sectors (FMSA, adopted in 2022). Australia

TikTok applies age-verification measures to comply with the Online Safety Act 2021, enforced by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner. This has resulted in expanded use of AI and content-based controls that estimate users’ ages and trigger verification for minors.

TikTok age limits explained: What you can and can’t do by age

You need to be 13 or older to start a new TikTok account. Any user under the age of 16 will face strict restrictions and limits on how the account works. Users under 18 also face limitations, although these are not as strict as those applied to younger users.

If you are under 18, for example, you will be excluded from monetization features, including virtual gifts and TikTok Shop. These limitations are in place to protect children from abusive content and to reduce the risk of young people being exposed to adults they shouldn’t be interacting with.
