bypass TikTok age verification

TikTok is legally required to comply with age-verification laws. The UK Online Safety Act, Texas HB1181, and similar rules caused by COPPA in 20+ US states mean that users need to prove their age or risk losing access to features. TikTok can request ID or credit card verification, or use selfie-based AI checks to check your age. Understandably, Privacy-conscious users don’t want to upload government IDs, sensitive personal data, or facial scans to social media apps. Luckily, you don’t have to. In this guide, I’ll show you how to bypass TikTok age verification with a VPN.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) run your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server in the location of your choice. This can help you spoof your location, bypass age verification, and prevent TikTok from treating your account as underage. It also provides an added layer of data security. This is important since TikTok’s Chinese ownership raises concerns surrounding China’s National Intelligence Law (2017), which requires Chinese companies to cooperate with government intelligence requests.

In this article, I’ll list the best VPNs for TikTok to help you protect your online and data privacy. I’ll also explain how TikTok’s Community Guidelines can trigger Restricted Mode and age-related account limits.

Disclaimer: This post is intended for privacy-conscious adults who don’t feel comfortable providing personally-identifiable information to any site that asks for it, not as a way to help minors circumvent TikTok’s age restrictions. Comparitech does not condone or promote this in any way and stresses that readers act on the information in this post at their own risk.

How to bypass TikTok age verification with a VPN

Don’t worry if you’ve never used a VPN before, the process is quite simple.  Follow the steps below to change your TikTok region and to get your account running smoothly again. If you run into problems setting up or using your VPN, I’ve included troubleshooting tips later in this guide.

How to bypass TikTok age verification using a VPN

  1. Choose a reliable VPN for TikTok age verification. My top pick is NordVPN, which offers fast speeds, strong privacy settings, and reliable access to regions where TikTok applies fewer age checks. Surfshark is a solid lower-cost alternative, while TotalVPN works well if you want a VPN bundled with an antivirus at no extra cost.
  2. Sign up for your chosen VPN. The providers recommended here offer discounts and a money-back guarantee, giving you time to test whether the VPN works for you.
  3. Install the VPN app on your device. These VPNs all support Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, so you can use TikTok on your phone, tablet, or computer without compatibility issues.
  4. Connect to a VPN server in a country without strict age checks. Choose a location such as Canada or the Netherlands. This gives you a new IP address, which lets you bypass age verification laws in countries like the UK and states like Texas or Louisiana.
  5. Open TikTok and use the app normally. Once connected, restart TikTok or refresh the app. You should be able to browse, watch videos, and access age-restricted features without ID prompts.

Bypass TikTok age verification: troubleshooting

Having any problems changing your region to bypass age checks? If TikTok has changed to Restricted Mode or has begun asking you for an ID, you can follow the steps below to give your VPN the best chance of bypassing these restrictions.

  1. Restart the TikTok app. After you connect to the VPN, fully close TikTok and open it again. Don’t just swipe out and back in, actually kill it and relaunch.
  2. Clear the TikTok app cache. Old location data can stick around. Clearing the cache helps force TikTok to pick up your new IP address.
  3. Switch to a different VPN server. Try another server in the same country. Some IP addresses work better than others, and a quick switch often fixes it.
  4. Try TikTok in a browser instead of the app. The mobile app sometimes relies on extra signals such as GPS. Using TikTok in a browser increases the chances of it working with your VPN.
  5. Check Restricted Mode settings. Make sure Restricted Mode isn’t turned on in your TikTok settings. If it is, TikTok may keep filtering content while connected to the VPN.
  6. Sign out of your TikTok account. Signing out can help you check whether age restrictions are tied to your account or your location. This won’t let you upload or go live, but it can confirm whether your VPN setup is working before you sign back in.
  7. Ask VPN support for help. All the VPNs I recommend offer live chat. They can usually tell you which servers currently work best with TikTok.

If the steps above don’t work, the VPN you are using may not work reliably with TikTok. That is why it is important to stick to a recommended provider. If you already have an existing VPN subscription, you may need to switch services to one that works reliably with TikTok.

Which countries work best to bypass TikTok age verification?

Short on time and just want TikTok to work normally? Below is a list of countries where TikTok generally applies fewer ID-based age checks. All of the VPNs I recommend for TikTok offer servers in these locations, so you have multiple options if one server doesn’t work.

As a general rule, you’ll get better performance by choosing a country that’s closer to where you actually are. Shorter distances usually mean faster loading and fewer issues with videos or TikTok Live by keeping your ping down and your speeds up.

These countries currently tend to work well for bypassing TikTok’s age verification:

If one location doesn’t work right away, try another server in the same country or switch to a nearby region.

How to turn off Restricted Mode on TikTok

If your account is behaving like an underage account, Restricted Mode may already be enabled on your account. You can check this and disable it by following the steps below.

  1. Open TikTok.
  2. Tap Profile (bottom-right).
  3. Tap the menu (three lines) in the top-right.
  4. Tap Settings and privacy.
  5. Tap Content preferences.
  6. Tap Restricted Mode.
  7. Tap Turn off (or toggle it off).
  8. Enter your Restricted Mode passcode to confirm.

Please note that in some regions, Restricted Mode may appear under Digital Wellbeing (or a local translation of that term). Restricted Mode requires a password, so it is unlikely to have become enabled on its own. Instead, it has probably been set up previously and forgotten (by you or another user with access to the same account).

If TikTok is suddenly filtering a lot of content but Restricted Mode isn’t actually turned on, the problem is usually tied to the birthdate on your account or a region-level rule, not the setting itself. In that situation, flipping a toggle won’t fix it. You will need to contact TikTok support to request the change, or use a VPN to switch to a different region.

Is it dangerous to provide an ID to TikTok?

TikTok claims to provide security measures to protect user IDs. However, whenever you send a copy of your ID over the internet, this introduces risks related to interception, handling, storage, and usage. This is why many people prefer not to send their ID to social media services.

Besides the security risks, there are also increased privacy concerns. If you provide your ID, this means that TikTok can tie what you watch, how long you watch it, what you interact with, and how you engage with content directly to your person. This allows for high levels of profiling, and could lead to your preferences being sold to third parties, such as data brokers and marketing companies.

Modern AI monitoring systems increase these risks further. By using AI to analyze watch time, rewatches, likes, comments, and engagement patterns, TikTok can track interests, preferences, and reactions at scale. Studies reveal that this type of information allows invasive secondary inferences about your religion, political beliefs, sexual preferences, and other highly personal information.

It is also worth noting that in some regions, users have faced legal consequences for comments made on TikTok. Users living in countries with high levels of surveillance and overreaching censorship should be aware that providing an ID can increase the chance of comments being tied to their person.

Note that some of the VPNs I recommend now include additional identity theft protection services. These can help you monitor for misuse after submitting important documents online (for example, by checking that your personal information doesn’t appear on people finder sites).

TikTok is Chinese-owned

When using TikTok, the usual concerns surrounding tracking and identification documents are heightened by the potential for data to be shared with the Chinese government. Chinese laws such as the National Intelligence Law (2017) and the Data Security Law (2021) give Chinese authorities broad powers to compel access to user data held by Chinese companies, including data stored overseas.

TikTok says it stores international user data outside China and limits access. However, the Chinese law makes it clear that all Chinese companies have to comply, creating grey areas that make many privacy-conscious users uncomfortable about uploading passports or other government IDs.

Why TikTok restricts accounts and triggers age verification

TikTok uses a combination of automated systems and human oversight (manual review) to check accounts. It does this to ensure that young people, under the age of 18, are not being exposed to content that is meant for adults.

TikTok’s analysis primarily revolves around automated content filters. These systems scan videos, captions, comments, and account behavior (engagement patterns) for signs that the account belongs to a minor.

Automation also uses AI to analyze the videos you upload. This allows facial recognition systems to make decisions about your age. Another possible route to age restrictions is a report from another user, or sudden changes in visibility, such as a video going viral.

When automated systems detect a minor, TikTok may initiate a manual review. At this time, features such as TikTok Live (Go Live), direct messaging, or monetization tools may temporarily be blocked. The account may also be put in Restricted Mode to prevent the user from being exposed to content unsuitable for their age.

TikTok’s Community Guidelines also play a role in this process. Account holders who create content for younger audiences, for example, may trigger repeated checks.

Once an account is flagged, TikTok is obliged to enforce actions. This is due to child safety regulations across more than 20 US states, as well as in other countries around the world. If they limit your account, this can lead to reduced reach and a loss of creator features until the verification is completed.

Countries and regions requiring TikTok age verification

If you live in, or are traveling through, any of the countries listed below, TikTok may suddenly ask you to verify your age. If an age check is triggered while you are abroad, you could still be required to complete verification even after returning home. This is why many users choose to connect to a VPN server in their home country while traveling.

Below is an overview of the countries and regions where TikTok age verification is most commonly enforced. Each entry highlights the law or regulatory pressure that causes TikTok to apply stricter age checks.

United States

In the US, TikTok has begun enforcing age checks in response to the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Due to these child protection laws, TikTok has expanded the use of AI age estimation, facial analysis, and account reviews across much of the country.

Below, I have included details of the states where explicit age-verification regulations are already in place:

  • Louisiana: One of the first states to introduce modern age-verification rules for online platforms
  • Utah: Enforces age checks for adult or age-restricted online content
  • Virginia: Applies age-verification requirements to certain categories of digital media
  • Arkansas: Requires proof-of-age checks for specific types of online material
  • Texas: HB1181 mandates age verification for content considered harmful to minors

In addition to the states listed above, age verification is also known to be triggered regularly in many other US states as part of TikTok’s broader efforts to comply with COPPA and reduce regulatory risk nationwide. These include Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wyoming, and others.

Why does TikTok apply age checks if my state hasn’t passed age verification laws yet?

Complying with a patchwork of different regulations creates challenges for social media companies like TikTok. By rolling out automated systems across more regions, TikTok ensures it is acting defensively to avoid potential fines under existing laws such as COPPA. This proactive approach can also help bolster its reputation by demonstrating that it is taking steps to protect minors.

United Kingdom

In the UK, TikTok uses age verification to comply with the Online Safety Act (2023). The law requires platforms to prevent minors from accessing age-restricted content and features. This is why TikTok introduced stricter AI age estimation, selfie-based checks, and additional account restrictions for users in Britain.

European Union

TikTok applies age verification across Europe to comply with regional digital safety and data-protection rules. These regulations require platforms to protect children and allow the use of AI age estimation or ID-based checks.

Germany

Germany has one of the strictest legal frameworks to limit minors’ exposure to adult content. As a result, TikTok enforces harsher age controls to comply with Jugendmedienschutz-Staatsvertrag (2003) and the updated Jugendschutzgesetz (2021), both of which regulate minors’ access to age-restricted online content.

France

France began testing privacy-focused age-verification systems after passing Law No. 2023-566 (7 July 2023), which strengthens controls on access to age-restricted online content. TikTok takes part in these regulatory trials. This can cause users in France to see additional age-verification prompts, including AI-based and privacy-preserving checks.

Switzerland

TikTok applies age-verification measures to comply with the Federal Act on the Protection of Minors in the Film and Video Game Sectors (FMSA, adopted in 2022). The law requires platforms to limit minors’ access to age-restricted games and video content, which places video-sharing platforms like TikTok within its scope.

Australia

TikTok applies age-verification measures to comply with the Online Safety Act 2021, enforced by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner. This has resulted in expanded use of AI and content-based controls that estimate users’ ages and trigger verification for minors.

TikTok age limits explained: What you can and can’t do by age

You need to be 13 or older to start a new TikTok account. Any user under the age of 16 will face strict restrictions and limits on how the account works. Users under 18 also face limitations, although these are not as strict as those applied to younger users.

If you are under 18, for example, you will be excluded from monetization features, including virtual gifts and TikTok Shop. These limitations are in place to protect children from abusive content and to reduce the risk of young people being exposed to adults they shouldn’t be interacting with.

Age verification for creators and monetization on TikTok

Age checks are more likely to happen when money or advanced creator tools are involved. For example, using the Creator Rewards Program requires you to confirm both your identity and age. Until you do this, you will not be able to enable payouts. TikTok enforces this by requesting government-issued ID or selfie-based verification.

Accounts flagged as underage may also lose access to Creator Search Insights. If your account is limited due to age, creator analytics and discovery tools may remain unavailable until you provide identification.

This is why many creators only experience age verification prompts after attempting to monetize, go live, or scale their reach. TikTok treats these actions as higher-risk activities, which is why it engages in additional safeguards.

How to bypass TikTok age verification: FAQs

Can you change your date of birth on TikTok?

Not in account settings. When you create a TikTok account, the date of birth you enter is locked permanently to your account. TikTok does not have an account settings page where you can edit your age or birthdate.

TikTok locks your account age as a safety control. This ensures that users can’t abuse the system by changing their age periodically. This helps to protect minors.

If you entered the wrong date of birth and don’t want to create a new TikTok account, the only option is to go through TikTok’s appeal process. To do this, you will need to contact TikTok support and ask them to review your account.

In some cases, TikTok may ask for proof of age, and under some conditions, the request may be denied. If this happens to you, you can test using a VPN to switch to a different region to see if this removes the restrictions you encounter.

What is a TikTok appeal?

A TikTok appeal is the official process for challenging an age restriction or feature block. If your account is limited, TikTok may allow you to submit an appeal through the app. In most cases, this requires ID verification or a selfie-based age check, which many privacy-conscious users prefer not to provide.

What is TikTok Family Pairing?

TikTok Family Pairing is a parental control feature that allows a parent or guardian to link their account to a child’s account. When Family Pairing is enabled, settings such as Restricted Mode, direct messaging, and content visibility can be controlled by the linked account. These restrictions can remain active even if the user later meets age requirements.

Is it legal to use a VPN to change TikTok region?

Yes, it is legal to use a VPN to access TikTok, and VPNs are legal in most countries. However, using a VPN to change your region or bypass age checks may go against TikTok’s Terms of Service.

That said, breaking a platform’s terms is not the same as breaking the law. Enforcement is inconsistent, and many users rely on VPNs for privacy, security on public wifi, or while traveling. The main risk is account-level action from TikTok, not legal consequences.

Can TikTok shadowban accounts after age verification?

Yes. Even after age verification, TikTok can still limit reach or visibility if an account triggers Community Guidelines, safety systems, or repeated flags. Age verification removes age-based blocks, but it does not override content moderation or ranking rules. In some cases, reach does not fully return, even after age restrictions are removed.
