Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for a Vietnam IP address

Many VPNs don’t have servers in Vietnam, so it’s easy to rule them out. But what about the providers that do? To rank these, we subjected them to speed tests and evaluated their security and privacy features, value for money, and overall user-friendliness.

Speed

While using an IP address in Vietnam, you’ll undoubtedly want to do all the things you normally do online, like streaming, gaming, or torrenting. This requires a VPN that won’t drastically slow your connection down (all VPNs slow your connection to some extent). We found the fastest providers by speed-testing their servers in Vietnam at multiple times over the course of a day.

To better replicate the experience of the average user in the US (where most of our readership is based), we rate-limited our connection speed to 250 Mbps. We measured each VPN’s speed using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app. The results were averaged and then converted to a score out of 10 for ease of comparison.

Network suitability

In order to get a Vietnamese IP address, you’ll need access to VPN servers in Vietnam. As such, we started by scoring providers on the number of server locations they had in Vietnam. Next, we scored them on the number of other countries they support. Finally, we checked their streaming ability with platforms from around the world. Those that scored highly were able to unblock the most services.

Once the results were in, we weighted each score and then combined them to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider. This makes a quick comparison easier.

There are many free VPNs available, and we understand that they are tempting. However, there isn’t exactly a wealth of choice when it comes to free VPNs in Vietnam. What’s more, there are a number of reasons why we don’t recommend free VPNs, no matter the country.

First of all, free VPNs rarely offer servers in Vietnam. In fact, free VPNs tend to offer fewer servers overall. When you combine this with the high number of users, free VPNs often suffer from poor performance. Indeed, free VPNs usually have data caps and bandwidth limits. So if you’re planning on streaming TV shows and movies, a free VPN will likely provide a lot of lag, buffering, and stress!
