Are you looking to stream video from Italian platforms like Netflix Italy, Rai Sport, or La7 online from abroad? Perhaps you just want to log into your ABI or Bank d’Italia online banking account from overseas without receiving fraud alerts every time? In these situations and more, you can benefit from using an Italian IP address. In this post, we’ll explain what a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is, and how you can use one to get an Italian IP address from anywhere in the world.

How to get an Italian IP address

Using a VPN is among the easiest ways to browse the internet safely. It will encrypt your network traffic, making it unreadable to any outside observers, including hackers, network administrators, or your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This is particularly useful if you watch a lot of video online, since ISPs have been known to throttle the connections of users who stream frequently.

One of a VPN’s main advantages is that it can spoof your location and enable you to access geo-blocked sites and services even if you’re outside of their required regions. When you connect to an Italian VPN server, you’re assigned a temporary Italian IP address. When a website checks your location, it’s tricked into believing you’re actually in Italy, and grants you access. This means that with a VPN, you can use Italian services from the US, the UK, Canada, Spain, France, or any other country in the world.

How to obtain an Italian IP address with a VPN

Don’t worry if you’ve never used a VPN before; bypassing regional restrictions is actually very straightforward and only takes a minute:

  1. Start by registering with a suitable VPN provider (we recommend ExpressVPN).
  2. Next, download and install the VPN software, making sure to get the right version for your device.
  3. Log in to the app.
  4. Connect to one of the available Italian servers.
  5. Try loading a geo-blocked website. It should appear instantly but if you’re still seeing an error, try refreshing the page or restarting your browser.

TIP: HOW TO GET A GREAT PAID VPN FOR FREE: There’s no need to subscribe for a year or more if you only need a VPN for a short time. If you’re going on vacation or just want to watch one specific event online, you can take advantage of ExpressVPN’s 30-day money-back guarantee instead. While you are required to pay upfront, you can cancel at any point to receive a full refund, no questions asked. This means you can effectively get short-term VPN protection for free, with no risk at all.

Can I get an Italian IP address with a free VPN?

While it is possible to get an Italian IP address with a free VPN, we advise against doing so. These services almost always have more users than their servers can support, which leads to extremely slow speeds, sporadic connections, and stuttering video playback. Additionally, popular streaming sites regularly upgrade and improve their geo-restriction measures. While premium services can usually unblock them shortly afterwards, free VPNs often lack the resources required to find a workaround.

Servers are expensive to maintain, and free VPNs have to pay for this somehow. You’ll almost always find that they insert ads into the pages you visit, but some go even further. By storing tracking cookies on your device, companies can keep tabs on which sites you like and how often you visit. This information is then sold without your knowledge or explicit consent at a later date. When it comes to free VPNs, the provider, not the user, decides what happens to personal data.

Finally, installing a free VPN comes with significant risks. A 2015 study showed that there were dozens of malware-carrying free VPN apps on the Google Play Store. Even if your chosen service doesn’t infect your system, there’s no guarantee it encrypts your data or stops it leaking. Sadly, even well-known free VPNs have resorted to shady and misleading business tactics. As a result, we recommend using a reputable VPN service that has a clearly-worded, customer-first privacy policy.

Can I watch Italian TV abroad with a VPN?

After connecting to one of your VPN’s Italian servers, you should be able to access the vast majority of geo-blocked sites and services. This means you can stream content from platforms like Netflix Italy, Rai TV (and RaiPlay), La 7, and Canale 5 without any issues. In contrast, trying to watch from abroad without a VPN usually results in an error, such as Cielo TV’s “Video non disponibile” (“Video not available”).

Note that you’ll still need a subscription in order to access premium services abroad. If you usually reside in Italy, you can likely sign up from other countries using your regular PayPal account or credit card. However, if a particular service requires your payment method to be linked to an Italian billing address, it’s all but impossible for non-Italians to register. One possible workaround is to use iTunes or Google Play gift cards. However, there aren’t many streaming services that allow you to pay in this way.

DISCLAIMER: Comparitech does not encourage using a VPN to stream content illegally. Please consult local laws before deciding to embark on this route. If you have any questions, then it’s best to talk to a lawyer in your country of residence.
