IP address Turkey

Quick Summary
In Short

  • Turkey has a heavily censored internet, but there are situations where accessing the web as though you were there can be helpful.
  • VPNs allow you to spoof your location and access sites that are normally only accessible from within Turkey (like TRT or Kanal D, for instance).
  • I extensively tested more than 70 leading providers to find out which VPNs are best for getting a Turkish IP address.
  • NordVPN is my top pick for getting an IP address from Turkey. Its speed and security are exceptional, plus it can sidestep virtually any online restriction.

Want to access Turkish streaming platforms and other sites? You’ll need a Turkish IP address to appear as if you’re in Turkey.

But what exactly is a VPN? The short version is that it’s a tool that encrypts your internet traffic. This prevents anyone from seeing what you do online, lets you bypass web-blocking systems, and makes ISP throttling less likely. VPNs also hide your real IP address by replacing it with one pointing to your chosen server’s location. Using a server in Turkey, for instance, would get you a Turkish IP address.

I’ll explore the top VPNs in more detail shortly. For now though, here’s a quick guide to the best VPNs for anyone trying to get a Turkey IP address abroad:

  1. NordVPN: My #1 choice for getting a Turkish IP address. Ideal for accessing Turkish content abroad. Boasts a large network, 24/7 support, and a strong privacy offering. Includes a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.
TIP In our testing we found that the cheapest NordVPN plan (Standard) works perfectly for a Turkish IP.
  2. Surfshark: The best budget VPN offering Turkish VPN servers. No-logs provider with high speeds and no connection limit. Very easy to use.
  3. Total VPN: A quick and beginner-friendly VPN with speedy servers in Turkey. Strong choice for security, streaming, or any other day to day task.
  4. ProtonVPN: With quick, reliable Turkish servers and first-class security features, this VPN is great for browsing safely and unblocking Turkish content.
  5. ExpressVPN: This zero-logs service excels at accessing region-locked streaming platforms. Novice-friendly, with 24/7 support and fast speeds.
  6. IPVanish: Connect all of your devices at once with this logless, superfast VPN. Reliable Turkish servers, powerful privacy tools, and excellent streaming ability.
  7. CyberGhost: Reliable provider with high-speed Turkish servers and lots of customizable security features. Also offers 24/7 support over live chat.
  8. PureVPN: One of the cheapest, most reliable ways to get a Turkish IP address. Easy to use, with AES encryption and a kill switch. Torrenting is permitted.
  9. Private Internet Access: Servers in 91+ countries, Turkey included. Solid speeds and a no-logs policy. Secure every device you own simultaneously.
  10. PrivateVPN: An anonymity-first VPN with the ability to unblock Turkish TV channels from anywhere. Can even beat country-wide censorship.

Warning

Many VPNs claim to work with a Turkish IP but most (especially free VPNs) are often blocked.

We regularly test the top 70 VPNs with all major streaming sites and this list only includes VPNs which reliably unblock a Turkish IP and offer a full money-back guarantee, allowing you to try them risk-free.

How to get a Turkey IP address

Here’s how to use a VPN to get an IP address for Turkey:

  1. Sign up with a VPN with servers in Turkey. I recommend NordVPN.
  2. Download and install the VPN app.
  3. Clear your cookies so that the website or service you want to access forgets your true IP address and location.
  4. Open the VPN app and connect to a server in Turkey. If you’re in Turkey and want to access content that is blocked in the country, you’ll have to choose a server in another country.
  5. You should now be able to access region-locked Turkish websites such as TRT, even if you’re traveling abroad. If not, I’d suggest reaching out to your VPN’s customer support team for further assistance.

WANT TO TRY THE TOP VPN RISK FREE?

NordVPN is offering a fully-featured risk-free 30-day trial if you sign up at this page. You can use the VPN rated #1 for Turkey without any restrictions for a monthgreat if you want to access your usual services while on vacation.

How I chose the best VPNs for Turkish IP addresses

There are hundreds of VPNs all competing for your attention but some don’t even have Turkish servers, making them useless in this scenario. Plenty of others have substandard speeds or security too, which is why I tested providers across five different categories. Here’s a rundown of what I looked for and why it matters.

  • Speed: Every VPN will slow down your speeds to some degree. To find those with the smallest footprint possible, I tested each provider’s Turkish servers at different times of day using a 250 Mbps connection.
  • Versatility: First off, I checked how many devices you can connect simultaneously. Then, I looked for split tunneling support and tested each VPN against a gauntlet of the most difficult to access streaming services.
  • Security and privacy: VPNs are primarily for enhancing your privacy. That’s why I require unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, leak protection, and a no-logs policy at a bare minimum. Naturally, I prefer VPNs with additional security tools and a history of independent audits.
  • Ease of use: Any service that goes out of its way to simplify or enhance the user experience is a winner in my eyes. I awarded points for any “nice to have” features like unlimited connections, 24/7 live chat, or task-specific servers.
  • Value for money: Last but not least, I wanted to make sure you actually get a VPN worth paying for. This meant looking at their lowest prices, the availability of student or first-responder discounts, and how versatile each VPN is.

This is just a quick look at my testing process. For more details, check out the methodology section at the bottom of this page.

NordVPN is my first choice for getting a Turkish IP address. It has more than 9,000 servers spread across 130 countries, and Istanbul servers capable of unblocking major platforms like Kanal D and ATV abroad. It’s also suitable for bypassing strict censorship, helping keep your activities private during a trip to China, Russia, Turkey, or anywhere else. Up to 10 simultaneous connections are permitted and there’s 24/7 support via live chat in case you run into any trouble.

Screenshot showing NordVPN's Turkey servers
This provider boasts an easy to use app, powerful streaming abilities, and around a dozen Turkish servers

I wanted to see what kind of performance NordVPN was capable of, so I tested its Turkish servers in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon using a 250 Mbps connection. It achieved an average speed of 218.03 Mbps, making it the fastest provider in this list and much quicker than is needed for streaming Turkish TV.

Privacy is another area where this VPN excels. NordVPN follows a strict zero-logs policy and has been audited several times. Its apps keep you safe using unbreakable encryption (AES-256 or ChaCha20), an app-specific kill switch, and protection against WebRTC, DNS, and IPv6 leaks. There’s also a built-in ad and tracker-blocker, multi-hop servers that encrypt your data twice, and a dark web monitor that will alert you if your personal details are leaked onto the dark net.

NordVPN has its own Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS, and Android apps. There are also extensions for Chrome and Firefox, plus manual setup guides for routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want one of the fastest VPNs on Turkish servers (200+ Mbps average)
  • You need obfuscation to bypass Turkey’s strict digital limitations
  • You’d like to try a VPN with a huge network
  • You want proven no-logs protection with independent audits
  • You plan to unblock stubborn platforms like Netflix Turkey

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You specifically need port forwarding for torrenting through Turkish servers

BEST VPN FOR TURKEY:NordVPN is my first choice. Boasts high-speed servers in Turkey and 130 other countries. Very strong on security, yet also able to unblock most streaming services. This no-logs VPN comes with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Surfshark is the best low-cost option for getting a Turkish IP address. It has eight servers in Turkey and 4,500 more in 100 countries around the world. Additionally, this is one of the only major providers with no connection limit. As such, you’ll be able to secure your entire household with a single account. I was impressed by Surfshark’s streaming ability and was able to access platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and TRT with no problems. If anything had gone wrong though, I’d have been able to get help quickly via live chat.

Screenshot showing Surfshark's turkey servers
This VPN has a clean and intuitive interface that’s suitable for beginners and expert users alike

Surfshark has a stellar track record where speed is concerned, so I was excited to try its Turkish servers for myself. This VPN had an average speed of 216.22 Mbps, just a hair slower than NordVPN, though its three results were closer together. With speeds like this, you should be able to handle any day to day activity just fine. Let’s see how quick Surfshark was at different times of day:

Surfshark is also very strong on security, working flawlessly in high-censorship countries like Turkey and China so long as its NoBorders mode is active. Privacy features include uncrackable 256-bit AES encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, and a proven no-logging policy. This VPN can also change your IP address periodically while keeping your location the same, let certain apps pass through unencrypted, and block ads/trackers automatically.

This VPN offers apps for MacOS, Linux, Windows, Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV. You can also manually install it on most routers or take advantage of its Firefox and Chrome extensions.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You need unlimited device connections for family or group use
  • You want the best budget-friendly VPN with Turkish servers
  • You’re looking for a VPN that reliably unblocks BluTV, PuhuTV, and Netflix
  • You want NoBorders mode for bypassing Turkish censorship

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You want the cheapest possible short-term coverage

BEST BUDGET VPN:Surfshark is my top low-cost VPN. Affordable, yet strong on privacy and performance. Works well with Turkish streaming platforms and can protect every device you own. All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Total VPN has been on the scene for more than a decade and has built up a network of 1,800 servers in 80+ countries including Turkey. This provider can handle whatever you throw at it, allowing torrenting on any server and reliably working with stubborn streaming apps like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. There’s 24/7 support via live chat and a five simultaneous connection limit. That’s lower than I’d have liked but a fairly minor complaint, all things considered.

Screenshot showing Total VPN's Turkey servers
This provider has a large network, with reliable servers in Turkey that are suitable for a wide variety of tasks

Slow speeds are a real nuisance, causing issues like lag, stuttering, and sudden disconnection from the VPN. I took a closer look at Total VPN’s Turkish servers, recording an average speed of 166.46 Mbps with only 8 Mbps of variability. In short, you should be able to watch Turkish TV, play games, or video call without any noticeable performance hiccups. Here are the full test results:

Total VPN boasts a strong set of security features so there’s no need to worry about anyone intercepting your traffic. For starters, its 256-bit AES encryption is considered uncrackable. There’s also automatic DNS and IPv6 leak protection, plus a kill switch (on all platforms except Windows). This VPN’s Hydra protocol can even hide the telltale signs of VPN activity, which is particularly helpful if you’re on a network which normally blocks VPN users entirely.

Total VPN has its own apps for Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS. Currently, this VPN does not support routers or Linux devices.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want beginner-friendly apps
  • You need speedy Turkish servers for watching live TV abroad
  • You want to unblock Netflix Turkey and Amazon Prime Video reliably
  • You value the Hydra protocol for hiding VPN usage on restrictive networks

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You’re looking for a VPN with lots of advanced features
  • You need more than five simultaneous device connections

HIGHLY VERSATILE:Total VPN is great for streaming Turkish TV, torrenting, and gaming. This beginner-friendly service even comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee, which increases to 30 days if you sign up for a year or more.

ProtonVPN boasts nearly 20,000 servers spread across 140+ countries including Turkey, Armenia, and Cyprus. Not only can it unblock major streaming platforms like ATV, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer abroad, this service allows torrenting and even offers a Stealth protocol in case you need to connect from somewhere with strict online restrictions. Users can connect 10 devices at the same time and get help, 24 hours per day via live chat. Just note that free users can’t choose their own server location.

Screenshot showing ProtonVPN's turkey servers
This is a freemium provider but you’ll have to upgrade if you want to use its servers in Turkey

I put ProtonVPN’s Turkish servers to the test, trying them against a gauntlet of everyday activities. I was able to stream, play games, and torrent with no issues, and with an average speed of 213.32 Mbps, ProtonVPN is actually one of the fastest providers in this list. So long as your internet is reasonably quick, you can more or less do anything you like! Take a look at my complete test results:

ProtonVPN is known for its strong privacy credentials, having been created by the team behind Proton Mail. It supports numerous protocols including OpenVPN and WireGuard, uses uncrackable encryption, and offers safeguards like leak protection and a kill switch so your data is never made visible. ProtonVPN has a proven zero-logs policy but also offers multi-hop servers and automatic ad and tracker-blocking. I’d prefer if there was at least one anonymous payment option though.

ProtonVPN has apps for iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It can be manually configured for use with most routers too.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want Swiss jurisdiction for maximum privacy
  • You need access to lots of advanced security tools
  • You plan to torrent and want port forwarding on Turkish servers
  • You want to stream Turkish platforms like BluTV and Digiturk Play securely

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You’re looking for the most budget-friendly option
  • You’re a beginner who needs a more user-friendly interface

FULLY FEATURED:ProtonVPN caters to tech-savvy users, offering plenty of privacy tools and exceptionally high speeds. Truly huge network and a verified no-logs policy. Paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN is truly something special: a novice-friendly provider with the ability to beat the toughest censorship in the world. Its network spans 105 countries (including Türkiye) and in my opinion, this VPN is one of the best for watching geo-blocked TV shows abroad. Whether you’re hoping to stream Netflix, Hulu, TV2, or ITVX, ExpressVPN rises to the challenge, and it allows P2P activity as well. Support staff can be reached, day or night, using the 24/7 live chat service.

Screenshot of ExpressVPN's Turkish server
ExpressVPN has a simple and clean design, making it as easy as possible to find a server that suits your needs

Time to see what ExpressVPN can do. I tested its Turkish servers in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon while on a 250 Mbps connection. ExpressVPN delivered an average speed of 140.39 Mbps, making it a great choice for bandwidth-intensive activities like playing Roblox, torrenting, or watching live TV broadcasts. You’ll find a breakdown of my test results below:

ExpressVPN has been extensive audited, proving beyond all reasonable doubt that it’s telling the truth about its no-logging policy. It’s also the only VPN in this list that has previously had Turkish authorities seize a server and walk away empty-handed with nothing gained. The VPN’s security tools include top-tier encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection, plus ad and tracker-blocking. There’s also split tunneling support and obfuscation that activates on its own in high-censorship countries.

This provider has a tiered subscripton model, offering higher connection limits and lower prices than ever before. Apps are available for Linux, MacOS, Windows, Android, and iOS, but there’s also a Smart DNS tool and custom firmware for routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You need a VPN that automatically activates obfuscation in high-censorship places like Turkey
  • You’d like to be able to access all kinds of geo-blocked sites
  • You want a no-logs policy that has been independently audited multiple times
  • You want MediaStreamer support for games consoles or smart TVs

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You’re on a budget (ExpressVPN is not the cheapest option)
  • You need port forwarding or advanced torrenting features

PRIVACY FIRST:ExpressVPN helps keep you safe no matter where you are. It’s quick, reliable, and versatile while never compromising on security. Works perfectly in places with extreme censorship. All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

IPVanish owns and operates all 3,200 of its servers, its network covering more than 100 countries including Turkiye. There are no connection limits and customer support is only ever a few seconds away via live chat. You can even speak out loud and have it transcribe what you’re saying, which is a nice touch. Better still, this VPN works with stubborn geo-blocked platforms like Prime Video, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer and is very reasonably priced for what it offers.

Screenshot of IPVanish's Turkey server
IPVanish has nearly a dozen servers in Turkey. Be aware that they’ll only show up if you search “Türkiye” — it maybe faster to just scroll through the list instead

I wanted to see how fast IPVanish’s Turish servers were, so I tested them at various points throughout a typical day. This service achieved an average speed of 190.54 Mbps which is, realistically, fast enough for whatever you have in mind. I was able to play fast-paced online games, watch live TV, and take part in video calls with no problems whatsoever. Here’s a look at IPVanish full test results:

IPVanish provides a high degree of security, using unbreakable ChaCha20 encryption to shield you from snooping. This is further strengthened using IPv6 and DNS leak protection, a kill switch, and a proven zero-logs policy. It’s also possible to scramble your OpenVPN traffic, getting around digital censorship and hiding the fact that you’re using a VPN at all. This service supports split tunneling functionality, blocks ads and trackers atuomatically, and now offers multi-hop servers, as well as a tool that can check whether links are safe to click.

IPVanish apps are available for iOS, Android, Windows, and MacOS, with manual setup needed for Linux systems and routers. Additionally, it has an Advanced subscription tier which bundles the VPN alongside cloud storage and a secure browser within a browser.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want a VPN that owns all its servers (better control and fewer risks)
  • You need unlimited simultaneous connections for the whole household
  • You’d like a VPN capable of accessing major Turkish streaming sites
  • You want high-speed WireGuard support (50 Gbps infrastructure)

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You need port forwarding for torrenting through Turkish servers
  • You want task-specific servers for streaming or P2P

WIREGUARD READY:IPVanish ensures uninterrupted access to Turkish content from anywhere in the world. Benefit from over 3,200 high-speed servers, robust encryption, and unlimited simultaneous connections to keep your browsing secure and private. CyberGhost has over two dozen servers in Turkey, its network covering 100+ countries in total. What’s particularly exciting about this VPN is that it lets you see at a glance which servers are best for streaming, gaming, and torrenting, taking all guesswork out of the equation. Of course, even the general-purpose servers are suitable for watching Turkish TV abroad so you can’t go too far wrong. There’s 24/7 customer support via live chat and a seven simultaneous connection limit.

Screenshot showing CyberGhost's Turkey servers
This VPN has task-specific servers, meaning it’s quick and easy to find one suitable for streaming, gaming, or evading digital censorship

So how does CyberGhost fare in terms of performance? Well, following a day of testing its Turkish servers, I recorded an average speed of 132.19 Mbps, meaning while it’s not the fastest, it’s certainly speedier than most of the competition. High-bandwidth tasks like streaming 4K video, gaming, and torrenting won’t be a problem, and honestly, you could probably do all three simultaneously with minimal fuss.

While this is one of the novice-friendly VPNs on the market, it comes with a pretty impressive set of privacy tools. There’s uncrackable encryption (256-bit AES or ChaCha20, depending on your chosen protocol), DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a kill switch, as well as a fully-audited no-logs policy. Its more advanced features include random port obfuscation, automatic wifi protection, ad and tracker-blocking, plus a Smart Rules feature that lets the VPN connect on its own in certain situations.

CyberGhost apps are available for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Manual setup is required for use with supported routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want to know which server is best for a given task
  • You’re looking for a VPN with lots of customizable features
  • You’d prefer a VPN with a longer money-back guarantee
  • You need a quality service at a budget-friendly price point

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You’re a power user who needs advanced configuration options
  • You need port forwarding support for torrenting through Turkish servers

GREAT FOR BEGINNERS:CyberGhost has a novice-friendly design and can handle anything you throw at it. Also provides a high level of security, which is a must when browsing in countries like Turkey. All plans come with a 45-day money-back guarantee.

PureVPN is another affordable, newcomer-friendly provider. It has roughly 6,000 servers in 65 countries, making it great for any international traveler who wants to watch TV from back home. For instance, it works with Turkish streaming platforms like BluTV, PuhuTV, Digiturk Play, and Netflix TR, plus international services like WhatsApp and Discord. You can secure up to 10 devices at the same time and customer support is available around the clock over live chat.

Screenshot showing PureVPN's turkey server
PureVPN allows you to filter its server list to only show those that support torrenting, quantum-resistant encryption, and more

To see what kind of performance you can expect, I put PureVPN’s Turkish servers to the test. After measuring its speeds in the morning, at midday, and in the afternoon, PureVPN had an average result of 174.32 Mbps, with around 10 Mbps of fluctuation. That’s pretty impressive and more than you’ll need for activities like playing games, streaming Turkish TV, and chatting over video call. See for yourself:

PureVPN doesn’t play around when it comes to keeping you safe. User traffic is shielded using 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, and protection against IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. This VPN has an extensive audit history and doesn’t keep any logs of your activities, either. Looking for a bit more control over your connection? In that case, you can activate the ad and tracker-blocking tool, let certain sites bypass the VPN entirely, or take advantage of port forwarding to improve your torrenting experience.

This VPN has apps for iOS, Windows, Android, MacOS, and Linux. Its website explains how to manually install PureVPN on your home router.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You’re looking for one of the most affordable ways to get a Turkish IP address
  • You specifically need to access Turkish streaming platforms like BluTV and Digiturk Play
  • You need port forwarding for torrenting (though it comes at an extra cost)

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You rely heavily on responsive customer support (PureVPN’s can be slow)
  • You need highly consistent speeds across different times of day

AMAZING VALUE:PureVPN offers one of the cheapest and most reliable ways to get a Turkish IP address. It is easy to use and comes with everything you need to gain watertight online privacy and security, including AES encryption and a kill switch. Torrenting is permitted throughout its network. It has a 31-day money-back guarantee to test it yourself.

Private Internet Access is a fantastic option for watching Turkish TV while traveling abroad. In fact, with more than 35,000 servers in 90+ countries, you’ll be able to access platforms like TRT, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Disney+ from anywhere. This VPN doesn’t impose bandwidth or connection limits either, and there’s 24/7 customer support available over live chat.  However, while it can beat Turkish censorship, just be aware that it won’t work in places like China.

This VPN has a large network and offers a good degree of customization, making it perfect for anyone hoping to tailor their security setup

The most likely reason you’re trying to get a Turkish IP address is that you want to stream. That’s a data-intensive task though, so you’ll need a pretty quick connection. I tested Private Internet Access‘ Turkish servers three times, resulting in an average speed of 56.65 Mbps. That is quite a bit slower than the services above but still enough for day to day tasks like watching live TV. Here’s a look at PIA’s results:

This service might be a little daunting for newcomers but it’s perfect for users who want absolute control. You can customize everything from its encryption level to the size of packets sent, and it’s one of the few providers that offers split tunneling and port forwarding as standard. Private Internet Access has a strict no-logs policy and keeps you safe using leak protection, a kill switch, unbreakable encryption, and a tool that blocks trackers as well as ads.

Private Internet Access has its own Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Amazon Fire TV apps. Browser extensions are available for Chrome and Firefox and its website offers manual setup instructions for routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want a provider with an expansive network
  • You’d like to connect all your devices simultaneously
  • You need a VPN with a strict no-logs policy for privacy when using a Turkish IP

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You need to bypass restrictions in China (PIA struggles with this)
  • You need the highest possible speeds for your Turkish connection

NO-LOGS PROVIDER:Private Internet Access makes it easy to get a Turkish IP address and stream Turkish TV from abroad. Boasts a large network, no logs, and no connection limits. Best of all, this VPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

PrivateVPN is a Swedish service that does things a little differently. Rather than trying to amass the largest network, this provider owns, maintains, and acts as an ISP to around 200 high-quality servers in 60+ countries. It’s a fantastic option for streaming too, since it works flawlessly with Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and plenty of Turkish streaming services. Up to 10 devices can be protected at once and support staff are on-hand via live chat, 24 hours per day.

PrivateVPN’s Turkish servers and strong streaming ability make it ideal for watching BluTV and other local content abroad

This VPN has never been the fastest, which is understandable given its self-managed approach. However, it still has to be quick enough to handle everyday tasks, so I ran a series of tests on its Turkish servers. PrivateVPN achieved an average speed of 36.28 Mbps, well above the recommended speeds for streaming, though undoubtedly slower than most of the other services in this list. The following chart breaks down how quick this VPN was at various times of day:

PrivateVPN has all of the tools you’ll need to stay safe online, including a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and unbreakable encryption (128-bit or 256-bit AES). Additionally, it includes a stealth mode capable of beating online restrictions in places like Turkey or China. Split tunneling support is included too, though this VPN doesn’t have an ad or tracker-blocker, and hasn’t been audited as yet. Still, with 10+ years in the industry and no data breaches, PrivateVPN must be doing something right.

PrivateVPN apps are available for the following operating systems: Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS. Manual configuration is required for Linux and routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want user-friendly apps with both simple and advanced menus for flexibility
  • You’d like a customizable VPN that can bypass any digital censorship
  • You need to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously to Turkish servers

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You demand consistently high speeds
  • You need Linux apps or router apps (manual configuration required)

SECURE SERVICE:PrivateVPN is secure and reliable, even if it’s not the fastest. Sidesteps censorship and unblocks major streaming sites with ease. This easy to use VPN also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Can I use a free VPN to get an IP address for Turkey?

The Turkish government blocks access to many VPN websites, despite the services themselves not being banned there. As such, there’s minimal chance of a free VPN working in Turkey to begin with, and even you find one that does, you’ll have to contend with slow speeds, a lack of server choice, and low monthly data limits.

Apart from the fact that they don’t often perform well, many free VPNs are unable to unblock popular geo-restricted sites and services. Many sites, such as Netflix have implemented anti-VPN measures that free VPNs are usually unable to navigate. The best-paid VPNs consistently find ways around such obstacles.

Last but not least, free VPNs are not a good idea in Turkey because they often provide minimal privacy benefits. I’ve seen scores of providers that don’t even bother to encrypt user traffic, and even more that come infected with malware or exist solely to funnel your data to advertisers for profit. Overall, free VPNs aren’t worth it.

Why do I need a VPN for Turkey?

Turkey has some of the strictest online restrictions in the world. In its 2025 Freedom on the Net report, Freedom House rated the country as “Not Free” with a score of just 31/100 putting it in line with places like Ethiopia (30 points) and the UAE (28 points). The internet is heavily censored, with around a million websites blocked and a government that is proactive about sending takedown requests to major websites. Not only that, but self-censorship is rife since internet users, activists, and politicians are frequently arrested and sentenced to jail time for the things they say online.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find your footing since high-profile blocks are often introduced without much warning. Wikipedia, for instance, was blocked for more than two years after the Turkish government realized it was named as a sponsor state for terrorist organizations. The likes of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Skype, and WhatsApp have all experienced blocks at some point in time. Censorship often occurs during periods of political unrest such as the failed coup attempt in 2016. Roblox was also blocked in August 2024, so you will need a VPN to access Roblox in Turkey.

While a VPN for Turkey can allow you to access government-censored content in the country, it can also unblock geo-restricted content. For instance, visitors to Turkey could watch TV from back home or stay in touch with family, regardless of whether their usual messaging service is blocked.

Which services are blocked in Turkey?

Turkish authorities regularly impose sweeping internet restrictions on the spur of the moment. The country’s leader, President Erdogan has previously blocked YouTube, Twitter, and Netflix because internet users were unkind about the birth of his fourth grandchild. As you might expect, these are far from the only restrictions you’ll face; as of 2024, around a million websites were blocked in Turkey.

So what other platforms are inaccessible? For a start, you’ll be unable to access sources of unbiased news (or really, anything that shows the government in a less than favorable light). Gambling and adult content are forbidden too, as are any sites promoting atheism or disparaging Islam. You won’t be able to use Uber, PayPal, or Booking.com either,so make sure you have travel and accomodation sorted before you arrive. You may also find that social media sites like Twitter and Instagram are sporadically blocked, so I’d suggest having a backup communication method.

We know what you’re thinking: you could just use a VPN to circumvent these restrictions. You can – it’s just that Turkey has blocked most VPN websites (as well as Tor), so you’ll have to have installed the VPN before your visit. Alternatively, your VPN may offer a mirror link that works in Turkey; just check with support staff before you leave home.

How can I watch Turkish TV abroad with a VPN?

If you want to watch Turkish TV abroad, all you have to do is open your VPN app or browser extension and select a server in Turkey. Once connected, any geo-restricted content from Turkey should be unblocked. If not, don’t worry. You may need to clear your browser’s cookies for the changes to take effect. Alternatively, try another server or contact your VPN’s customer support.

Using a Turkish server means you’ll be able to watch content from Turkish TV channels abroad, including ATV, Fox, and Kanal D, as well as Turkish streaming services such as PuhuTV and BluTV. VPNs with servers worldwide also allow you to access Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and ESPN.

Turkish IP address FAQs

Are VPNs legal in Turkey?

While there isn’t a law in Turkey that makes VPNs illegal, the government’s blocking of Tor and many popular VPN services makes this a grey area. However, we’ve not seen any reports of anyone being arrested or charged with a crime for using a VPN.

Disclaimer: Although Comparitech has spent hours researching this topic, nothing above should be taken as legal advice. Comparitech encourages you to consult local laws or perhaps even seek a professional’s opinion before attempting to use a VPN if you’re not completely sure that doing so is legal in your country.

What is a VPN virtual location?

Normally, if you pick a VPN server in the USA, you’ll be given an American IP address and be able to access US-only services like NBC from anywhere in the world. However, there are also virtual locations  which aren’t physically in the country; they simply appear to be.

For instance, it’s possible to run a server in the US and make it seem like it’s in China, giving you all the benefits of a Chinese IP address without actually passing your data through Chinese hardware (which could be monitored by the government). Virtual locations are good for users in places where the internet is heavily-restricted but they can introduce some unknowns as it’s not always clear where the server is operating from (and as such, which country’s data protection laws apply).

How do I make sure that my IP address has been changed to Turkey?

The easiest way to tell if you have a Turkish IP address is to wait a few seconds after connecting and then check the app. Many VPNs now display your public IP address alongside the location of your chosen server. Alternatively, you could use Comparitech’s IP address checker — aside from showing your IP address, it shows your location. If all is working well, this data should display your location as Turkey.
