- Turkey has a heavily censored internet, but there are situations where accessing the web as though you were there can be helpful.
- VPNs allow you to spoof your location and access sites that are normally only accessible from within Turkey.
- Our team has tested more than 50 leading providers to find out which VPNs are best for getting a Turkish IP address.
- NordVPN is our top pick for getting an IP address from Turkey. Its speed and security are exceptional, plus it can sidestep virtually any online restriction.
Navigating the web in Turkey or accessing Turkish content from abroad can be a very challenging experience. The weight of internet censorship in Turkey can be a burden, while the longing to connect with local content outside its borders can be equally frustrating. But what if there was a tool that we have tried and tested, that could restore your online freedom and remove geo-restrictions?
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) aren’t just for streaming; they’re your passport to an unrestricted web. Sending your internet traffic through a VPN server encrypts it, rendering it unreadable and hiding your online activities from local ISPs, hotspot owners, and the government. Of course, you’ll also be able to access Turkish websites, wherever you are in the world.
We’ll explore the top VPNs in more detail shortly. For now though, here’s a quick guide to the best VPNs for anyone trying to get a Turkey IP address abroad:
- NordVPN: Our #1 choice for getting a Turkish IP address! Works great with Turkish websites and accessing Turkish content. More than a dozen servers in Turkey and over 8,000 globally. Offers 24/7 support and 10 simultaneous connections. Strict no-logs policy. 30-day money-back guarantee.
TIP In our testing we found that the cheapest NordVPN plan (Standard) works perfectly for a Turkish IP. - Surfshark: Best budget VPN offering Turkish VPN servers. Unlimited simultaneous connections. No issues with stubborn geo-blocked sites. 24/7 support and user-friendly apps. Strict no-logs policy.
- Total VPN: A quick and beginner-friendly VPN with speedy servers in Turkey. A strong choice for security, streaming, or any other day to day task.
- ProtonVPN: Is ideal for tech-savvy users. Great for torrenting. Servers in over 117 countries. Able to bypass restrictions and watch Turkish TV abroad.
- ExpressVPN: A great VPN for anyone who needs an IP address for Turkey and wants to access geo-restricted content. Fast, easy to use, and offers 24/7 support. Excellent security with encryption.
- IPVanish: Over 3,200 servers in 140+ locations, including Turkey. Has dramatically improved its security and streaming ability lately. No connection limit. Offers 24/7 customer support via live chat.
- CyberGhost: Reliable provider with high-speed Turkish servers and lots of customizable security features. Also offers 24/7 support over live chat.
- PureVPN: One of the cheapest, most reliable ways to get a Turkish IP address. Easy to use, with AES encryption and a kill switch. Torrenting is permitted.
- Private Internet Access: Servers in 91+ countries, Turkey included. Solid speeds and a strict no-logs policy. Secure all of your devices at once.
- PrivateVPN: A smaller VPN provider offering powerful privacy tools and the ability to watch Turkish TV abroad. Novice-friendly apps.
Many VPNs claim to work with a Turkish IP but most (especially free VPNs) are often blocked.
We regularly test the top 70 VPNs with all major streaming sites and this list only includes VPNs which reliably unblock a Turkish IP and offer a full money-back guarantee, allowing you to try them risk-free.
How to get a Turkey IP address
Here’s how to use a VPN to get an IP address for Turkey:
- Sign up with a VPN with servers in Turkey. We particularly recommend NordVPN.
- Download and install a VPN app or browser extension for your device.
- Clear your cookies so that the website or service you want to access forgets your true IP address and location.
- Open the VPN app and connect to a server in Turkey. If you’re in Turkey and want to access content that is blocked in the country, you’ll need to choose a server in another country.
- The region-locked content should now be unblocked! If not, be sure to try another server or contact your VPN’s customer support.

How we chose the best VPNs for Turkish IP addresses
There are hundreds of VPNs all competing for your attention but some don’t even have Turkish servers, making them useless in this scenario. Plenty of others have substandard speeds or security too, which is why our experts performed hands-on testing that focused on five main areas of a VPN’s performance. Here’s a brief overview:
- Speed: Every VPN will slow down your speeds to some degree. To find those with the smallest footprint possible, our team tests them multiple times at various points throughout the day on a 250 Mbps connection.
- Versatility: First off, our team looks into how many devices you can connect simultaneously. Then, we look for split tunneling support and test each VPN against a gauntlet of the most difficult to access streaming services.
- Security and privacy: The primary goal of a VPN is to protect your privacy which is why our team require providers to offer unbreakable encryption and all of the necessary safeguards, plus a no-logs policy (ideally one that’s been verified by independent experts).
- Ease of use: Any service that goes out of its way to simplify or enhance the user experience is a winner in our eyes. For instance, they may offer streaming-optimized servers, unlimited connections, or 24/7 customer support via live chat.
- Value for money: Finally, we make sure that our readers are actually getting VPNs that are worth paying for. What’s more, if there’s a way to save (such as by taking advantage of a student discount) we’ll let you know.
This is just a quick look at our testing process. For more details, check out the methodology section at the bottom of this page.

NordVPN is our first choice for getting a Turkish IP address. It operates more than 8,000 servers in 120+ countries, with around a dozen in Turkey, including Istanbul servers. There are two methods for bypassing strict censorship: either using its obfuscated servers or the new NordWhisper protocol. Further, we can attest that this VPN also works with stubborn streaming platforms like Netflix, so watching TV from back home won’t be a problem.
Every VPN will slow down your connection, so it’s important to choose one that has as small an impact as possible. We tested NordVPN’s Turkish servers at three different times of day to see what they were capable of. Once all results were in, this VPN had an average speed of 213.03 Mbps on a 250 Mbps connection. That’s an incredible result, and one that’s well above what’s needed for live streaming. Take a look at our full test results below:
Privacy is another area where this VPN excels. NordVPN follows a strict zero-logs policy and has been audited several times. Its apps keep you safe using unbreakable encryption (AES-256 or ChaCha20), an app-specific kill switch, and protection against WebRTC, DNS, and IPv6 leaks. There’s also a built-in ad and tracker-blocker, multi-hop servers that encrypt your data twice, and a dark web monitor that will alert you if your personal details are leaked onto the dark net.
If you choose NordVPN, you can download apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Amazon Fire TV, Linux, and even Android TV. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are also offered. However, compatible routers require manual setup.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want one of the fastest VPNs on Turkish servers (200+ Mbps average)
- You need obfuscation (NordWhisper) to bypass Turkey’s strong VPN blocking
- You want a large server network (8,000+ worldwide, a dozen in Turkey)
- You want proven no-logs protection with independent audits
- You plan to unblock stubborn platforms like Netflix Turkey
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You specifically need port forwarding for torrenting through Turkish servers
BEST VPN FOR TURKEY:NordVPN is our first choice. It has a vast network of more than 8,000 servers, 10+ of which are in Turkey. Unblocks most popular streaming services. No-logs VPN with 24/7 support. Allows ten simultaneous connections. Risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Surfshark is the best low-cost option for getting a Turkish IP address. It offers affordable long-term VPN plans and is an excellent choice for families, as it allows for unlimited simultaneous connections. Aside from servers in Turkey, it has a server presence in over 100 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. That means you can use it to access region-locked content from almost anywhere. This includes Netflix and BBC iPlayer, two of the most difficult services to stream from abroad.
Despite its low price point, Surfshark has historically provided speeds comparable to those of its more expensive rivals. Our team performed three speed tests (one in the morning, one at noon, and one in the evening) to measure its performance over the course of a regular day. With an average speed of 216.22 Mbps, this was one of the fastest providers we saw, meaning it’s perfect for secure torrenting, streaming Turkish TV, torrenting, and making video calls. Let’s see those results:
Surfshark is also very strong on security, working flawlessly in high-censorship countries like Turkey and China so long as its NoBorders mode is active. Privacy features include uncrackable 256-bit AES encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, and a proven no-logging policy. This VPN can also change your IP address periodically while keeping your location the same, let certain apps pass through unencrypted, and block ads/trackers automatically.
You can download Surfshark apps for the following: Windows, Mac, Linux (command line or GUI), Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are also offered. Manual configuration is required for routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need unlimited device connections for family or group use

Total VPN has been on the scene for more than a decade and has built up a network of 1,800 servers in 80+ countries including Turkey. This provider can handle whatever you throw at it, allowing torrenting on any server and reliably working with stubborn streaming apps like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. You can connect a maximum of five devices at once and there’s 24/7 support via live chat or a ticket system.
Slow speeds cause all kinds of problems from stuttering video to unexpected disconnections. Our team tested Total VPN’s servers in Turkey several times using a 250 Mbps connection. We recorded an average speed of 166.46 Mbps — for context, that’s quick enough to download a 1 GB file in under a minute, stream 4K video, play online games, and video call without the slighest disturbance. Here’s a breakdown of Total VPN’s speeds at different times of day:
Total VPN boasts a strong set of security features so there’s no need to worry about anyone intercepting your traffic. For starters, its 256-bit AES encryption is considered uncrackable. There’s also automatic DNS and IPv6 leak protection, plus a kill switch (on all platforms except Windows). This VPN’s Hydra protocol can even hide the telltale signs of VPN activity, which is particularly helpful if you’re on a network which normally blocks VPN users entirely.
Total VPN has its own apps for Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want beginner-friendly apps with a simple setup for Turkish servers
- You’re looking for consistently fast speeds in Turkey for streaming
- You want to unblock Netflix Turkey and Amazon Prime Video reliably

ProtonVPN is a mainstay of the industry, having been created by the team behind the anonymity-focused Proton Mail service. It offers access to more than 15,000 servers in 120+ countries, works flawlessly in Turkey, and can unblock a huge range of geo-restricted platforms including Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+. It also has 24/7 live chat and a generous 10-simultaneous connection limit. Just be aware that free users are limited to one device and a randomly-selected server location.
With 10 Gbps servers all over the world, ProtonVPN should theoretically do quite well here. Following a full day of testing, our experts recorded an average speed of 213.32 Mbps. This places ProtonVPN firmly amongst the quickest providers on the market, and means you shouldn’t encounter any problems when streaming, downloading large files, or making video calls (provided your base connection is reasonably quick to begin with). Let’s take a look at those results:
This service is known for its high degree of privacy. ProtonVPN enhances your anonymity using unbreakable AES-256 encryption on OpenVPN (or ChaCha20 if you choose the WireGuard protocol), and a kill switch, plus protection against IPv6 and DNS leaks. Further, it’s capable of blocking ads and trackers automatically, obfuscating your traffic, and letting some apps through the VPN’s encryption. ProtonVPN refuses to keep any logs of your activities. It supports port forwarding, Tor over VPN, and multi-hop connections as standard too, which is excellent news for anyone who likes to tinker with advanced settings.
ProtonVPN has apps for iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It can be manually configured for use with most routers too.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want Swiss jurisdiction for maximum privacy
- You need advanced tools like Tor over VPN, multi-hop, and obfuscation
- You plan to torrent and want port forwarding on Turkish servers
- You want to stream Turkish platforms like BluTV and Digiturk Play securely

- You’re looking for the most budget-friendly option
- You’re a beginner who needs a more user-friendly interface

ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs for unblocking geo-restricted content around the world. It has servers in over 105 countries (including Türkiye) and automatically activates its obfuscation when it realizes you’re in a country with extreme online censorship. In fact, there’s virtually no restriction it can’t sidestep, working effortlessly with platforms like Disney+, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer.
Our team tested ExpressVPN’s Turkish servers at several different times of day (morning, midday, and in the evening) using a standard 250 Mbps connection. This resulted in an average speed of 140.39 with only around 9 Mbps of fluctuation. In short, ExpressVPN is fast enough to handle anything you throw at it including watching live TV broadcasts, playing games like Roblox, or torrenting. The following table shows just how fast this VPN was in each of our tests:
This service ensures your privacy using WebRTC, DNS, and IPv6 leak protection coupled with uncrackable quantum-resistant encryption and a kill switch. ExpressVPN has been audited more than a dozen times, so you can trust it when it says it doesn’t keep any logs. Still not sure? Turkish authorities seized one of this provider’s servers back in 2017 and failed to gain any useful information from it. That’s about as strong an endorsement as it’s possible to get! ExpressVPN is also capable of blocking ads and trackers, plus there’s split tunneling support in case you’d like to use region-locked websites from Turkey and another location at the same time.
You can download ExpressVPN apps for Windows, Android, Mac, iOS, and Linux. It also offers its own custom firmware for routers as well as a Smart DNS service called MediaStreamer that can help you stream US services on devices like Smart TVs and games consoles, which don’t support full VPN apps.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a VPN that automatically activates obfuscation in high-censorship places like Turkey
- You need to unblock virtually any content or website restriction in Turkey
- You want a no-logs policy that has been independently audited multiple times
- You want MediaStreamer support for games consoles or smart TVs
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re on a budget (ExpressVPN is not the cheapest option)
- You need port forwarding or advanced torrenting features
PRIVACY FIRST:ExpressVPN helps keep you safe no matter where you are. It has fast servers and unblocks most geo-blocked websites and services. Excellent user-friendly apps, friendly 24/7 support, and strong security with encryption. Offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Private Internet Access is another great choice for anyone hoping to watch Turkish TV during a trip abroad. Its network covers more than 90 countries and unlike most of its rivals, PIA lets you connect as many devices as you like. There are no bandwidth limits and torrenting is permitted on any of its 35,000+ servers. We’ve had great results using this VPN to unblock popular platforms like TRT1 and Amazon Prime Video, among many others.
The most likely reason you’re trying to get a Turkish IP address is that you want to stream. That’s a data-intensive task though, so you’ll need a pretty quick connection. We tested Private Internet Access‘ Turkish servers three times, resulting in an average speed of 56.65 Mbps. For context, that’s much faster than is needed for any day to day task, including watching live broadcasts. See for yourself:
Private Internet Access delivers a high degree of security thanks to its uncrackable AES-256 encryption, kill switch, and protection against DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks. This VPN also offers tracker-blocking, split tunneling, and port forwarding functionality as standard and refuses to keep any logs of your online activities. There are also obfuscated mult-hop servers which are perfect for browsing safely in Turkey. If you need any help customizing your connection, support staff are available 24/7 via live chat.
Private Internet Access provides apps for the following: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Amazon Fire TV. Furthermore, browser extensions can be downloaded for Chrome and Firefox. You can manually set up a connection with select routers, too.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need servers across 91+ countries including Turkey for flexibility
- You need to connect all your devices simultaneously
- You need a VPN with a strict no-logs policy for privacy when using a Turkish IP
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need to bypass restrictions in China (PIA struggles with this)
- You need the highest possible speeds for your Turkish connection

PrivateVPN is a Swedish service that does things a little differently. Rather than trying to amass the largest network, this provider owns, maintains, and acts as an ISP to around 200 high-quality servers in 60+ countries. It’s a fantastic option for streaming too, since it works flawlessly with Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and plenty of Turkish streaming services. Up to 10 devices can be protected at once and support staff are on-hand via live chat most of the day.
This VPN has never been the fastest, which is understandable given its self-managed approach. However, it still has to be quick enough to handle everyday tasks, so we ran a series of tests on its Turkish servers. PrivateVPN achieved an average speed of 36.28 Mbps, well above the recommended speeds for streaming, though undoubtedly slower than most of the other services in this list. The following chart breaks down how quick this VPN was at various times of day:
It shouldn’t come as a surprise given its name but PrivateVPN does a fantastic job of keeping you safe. Its provides adjustable encryption (128-bit or 256-bit AES), a kill switch that can close specific apps in the event of a sudden disconnection, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. It also follows a zero-logs policy, which is great, though we’d like to see it undergo a professional audit. On the plus side, PrivateVPN’s NoBorders mode lets you bypass any online censorship, even in countries like Turkey and China.
PrivateVPN apps are available for the following operating systems: Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS. Manual configuration is required for Linux and routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want user-friendly apps with both simple and advanced menus for flexibility
- You’d like a customizable VPN that can bypass any digital censorship
- You need to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously to Turkish servers
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You demand consistently high speeds
- You need Linux apps or router apps (manual configuration required)
SECURE SERVICE:PrivateVPN is a secure VPN that can access geo-restricted content such as Netflix with ease. Use this VPN on up to 10 devices simultaneously. Beginner-friendly desktop and mobile apps and a no-logs policy. 30-day money-back guarantee.

Can I use a free VPN to get an IP address for Turkey?
No, it’s unlikely a free VPN will work in Turkey since the Turkish government has been cracking down on VPNs. Free VPNs often attract the most attention in such cases, due to the high number of users trying to access the same servers. For this reason, very few free VPNs actually work in Turkey.
Even those select few free VPNs that do work in Turkey tend to suffer from other issues. For instance, their speeds tend to be far inferior to paid VPNs. This is due to free providers having smaller networks and more users than most paid services. If you’re in Turkey and looking to watch US Netflix, for example, you can expect a lot of buffering and lag with a free VPN, which can be very frustrating.
Apart from the fact that they don’t often perform well, many free VPNs are unable to unblock popular geo-restricted sites and services. Many sites, such as Netflix have implemented anti-VPN measures that free VPNs are usually unable to navigate. The best-paid VPNs consistently find ways around such obstacles.
Last but not least, free VPNs are not a good idea in Turkey because they’re not as secure. Turkey has a high level of internet censorship, and free VPNs lack security features such as encryption and a kill switch. Thus, your data may be leaked to your ISP. Worse still, some free VPNs actually infect your device with malware while some even sell your data to third parties. Overall, they’re just not worth the risk.
Why do I need a VPN for Turkey?
Turkey has some of the strictest online restrictions in the world. In its 2024 Freedom on the Net report, Freedom House rated the country as “Not Free” with a score of just 31/100 putting it in line with places like Egypt (28 points) and Bahrain (30 points). The internet is heavily censored, with around a million websites blocked and a government that is proactive about sending takedown requests to major websites. Not only that, but self-censorship is rife since internet users, activists, and politicians are frequently arrested and sentenced to jail time for the things they say online.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find your footing since high-profile blocks are often introduced without much warning. Wikipedia, for instance, was blocked for more than two years after the Turkish government realized it was named as a sponsor state for terrorist organizations. The likes of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Skype, and WhatsApp have all experienced blocks at some point in time. Censorship often occurs during periods of political unrest such as the failed coup attempt in 2016. Roblox was also blocked in August 2024, so you will need a VPN to access Roblox in Turkey.
While a VPN for Turkey can allow you to access government-censored content in the country, it can also unblock geo-restricted content. A quality VPN can help you unblock blocked and geo-restricted websites, apps, and services, but it can also protect your privacy, preventing your ISP (and potentially the Turkish government) from seeing what you’re doing online.
Which services are blocked in Turkey?
Turkish authorities regularly impose sweeping internet restrictions on the spur of the moment. The country’s leader, President Erdogan has previously blocked YouTube, Twitter, and Netflix because internet users were unkind about the birth of his fourth grandchild. As you might expect, these are far from the only restrictions you’ll face; as of 2024, around a million websites were blocked in Turkey.
So what other platforms are inaccessible? For a start, you’ll be unable to access sources of unbiased news (or really, anything that shows the government in a less than favorable light). Gambling and adult content are forbidden too, as are any sites promoting atheism or disparaging Islam. You won’t be able to use Uber, PayPal, or Booking.com either,so make sure you have travel and accomodation sorted before you arrive. You may also find that social media sites like Twitter and Instagram are sporadically blocked, so we’d suggest having a backup communication method.
We know what you’re thinking: you could just use a VPN to circumvent these restrictions. You can – it’s just that Turkey has blocked most VPN websites (as well as Tor), so you’ll have to have installed the VPN before your visit. Alternatively, your VPN may offer a mirror link that works in Turkey; just check with support staff before you leave home.
How can I watch Turkish TV abroad with a VPN?
If you want to watch Turkish TV abroad, all you have to do is open your VPN app or browser extension and select a server in Turkey. Once connected, any geo-restricted content from Turkey should be unblocked. If not, don’t worry. You may need to clear your browser’s cookies for the changes to take effect. Alternatively, try another server or contact your VPN’s customer support.
Using a Turkish server means you’ll be able to watch content from Turkish TV channels abroad, including ATV, Fox, and Kanal D, as well as Turkish streaming services such as PuhuTV and BluTV. VPNs with servers worldwide also allow you to access Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and ESPN.
Turkish IP address FAQs
Are VPNs legal in Turkey?
While there isn’t a law in Turkey that makes VPNs illegal, the government’s blocking of Tor and many popular VPN services makes this a grey area. However, we’ve not seen any reports of anyone being arrested or charged with a crime for using a VPN. For this reason, we understand that it is still legal to use a VPN in Turkey. However, we advise researching your country’s laws if you are unsure.
What is a VPN virtual location?
Virtual locations are a distinctive feature of certain VPN servers. They may seem like they’re in one place, but really it’s another – for example, you could be physically connected to the UK while your VPN virtual server shows that you’re currently browsing from Turkey.
This makes them perfect if someone wants some extra privacy or security when browsing Turkish websites or streaming content from Turkish TV channels.
How do I make sure that my IP address has been changed to Turkey?
By connecting to a VPN server in Turkey, you can be sure you now have a Turkish IP address. However, you may even be able to see this new IP address displayed in the VPN app (depending on the VPN in question). Alternatively, you can always use a service like whatismyip.com. Aside from showing your IP address, it shows some geo-location data. If all is working well, this data should display your location as Turkey.
