Kodi is a free and open-source home theater software program that works across multiple devices, including Windows PC, Mac OSX, Android, iOS (jailbroken), Linux, and Raspberry Pi. That includes streaming devices like Amazon Fire TV stick, Chromecast, and Roku. Kodi allows you to control your media with a remote control or gamepad and can connect to video channels from hundreds of different sources. You can download and install Kodi for free here.

WARNING: If you use Kodi without a VPN, your internet provider can see the websites you visit and the content you stream. In countries including the US internet providers can share data on how you use the internet with third parties. Our preferred VPN for Kodi users is IPVanish. IPVanish will keep your browsing activity secure and private and is one of the few VPNs with speeds faster enough for high quality streaming.

With its popularity, there are now a large number of Kodi addons. Many official Kodi addons can be used to access great NFL content, while there also exists a large number of popular, yet unofficial third-party Kodi NFL addons. The biggest question most Kodi users have now is whether which addons they should use. Many users, however, may not recognize some of the privacy and security risks associated with all addons, the third-party addons in particular.

This guide takes a deep dive into some of the best Kodi addons available for NFL. At this time of writing, our list only recommends the official addons where the best content can be found. At the bottom, we’ve also included an overview of unofficial addons, providing some more information on what users can expect to find with these.

How to safely and privately use Kodi addons for NFL

If you’re looking into streaming NFL games on Kodi, there are a large number of addons that will get you there. However, there are notable privacy and security risks associated with both the official Kodi addons and the more dubious unofficial addons. Regardless of whether the addon is official or unofficial, all Kodi addons present some risks. Those using unofficial Kodi addons to stream content will often use a VPN to hide their activity from their ISP and others, but there are good reasons everyone should use a VPN with Kodi.

Perhaps the most important risk to all Kodi users is related to addon hijacking. Kodi addons are delivered through unsecured HTTP connections. In many cases, these addons are also housed in repositories that are lacking security and delivered by individuals. In the past, some Kodi addons have been hijacked or even altered by their own creators and used to create hack attacks, such as DDoS botnets. Kodi addons can also be used to spy on user information, access hard drives, and collect personal information through man-in-the-middle attacks.

Thankfully, a great VPN can help keep Kodi users protected against these kinds of attacks. While a VPN won’t prevent all types of malware or hacking through Kodi, it can help prevent your information from slipping out to other parties and will keep our activity private. One of the best and most popular VPNs available for Kodi is IPVanish, a popular and commonly-used VPN service available for Kodi users.

IPVanish for Kodi users

IPVanish helps mask your identity and anonymize your data connection. Through IPVanish, no one, not even your ISP, will know who you are. Importantly, it is one of the few VPNs fast enough to work with Kodi without significantly slowing your internet speeds and ruining your viewing experience

Reader deal, save 69%: Comparitech readers can get 69% off a two year IPVanish plan.

Positively, a VPN like IPVanish will also help with other issues related to using Kodi. That includes allowing users to access geographically blocked content and allowing users to avoid ISP speed throttling. Especially for the latter point, many ISPs now throttle data for users who do a fair amount of video streaming. A VPN like IPVanish will make it so that your ISP does not know where your data is going to or coming from, making it difficult to justify slowing down your speeds.

Official streaming addons for NFL on Kodi

The following Kodi addons are the ones we recommend for users looking to stream NFL games for the 2018-2019 season. These addons offer a mixture of free and paid content. Most are easily available in the Official Kodi Addon Repository, although you may need to look elsewhere for some of the most recently updated versions.

The USTV Now Kodi addon gives users access to the legal USTV Now service. USTV Now is designed for US ex-pats and military who want to access American television channels while overseas.

USTV Now offers a free package with 7 channels, which includes FOX and NBC, meaning those looking for a few NFL games on Kodi during the 2018-2019 NFL season will be able to find some games free and clear on those networks.

For $19.99 a month, users can get 29 channels, which includes ESPN and ESPN2. For that price, hardcore NFL fans will get almost every game for just $19.99 a month.

Although you can find this addon in the Official Kodi Addon Repository, you may need to find the newer version elsewhere. We suggest you check out our USTVNow installation guide for more details.

Install DAZN Kodi addon

DAZN, or “Da Zone”, is a streaming service originally coming from the UK. It is now available in a number of different countries, including Germany, Japan, and Canada. Most recently, DAZN will be launching in the US with the promise of being a completely sports-dedicated streaming service that will also provide some coveted Pay-Per-View access.

DAZN currently carries every NFL to its Canadian subscribers, and may also provide access to NFL regular season matches and regular season games to other regions where available. The service launched in the US on September 10, but currently, there’s no word on whether it will offer NFL matches.

You can find the DAZN Kodi addon in the official Kodi addon repository. To use it, you will need to have an account with DAZN, as you cannot log into the addon without your account credentials.

Note: DAZN blocks IPVanish connections. To use DAZN to watch NFL games outside of the US, try using ExpressVPN and connecting to a Canadian server.

NBC Sports Live Extra

NBC Sports Live offers up all of the NBC Sports live streams through various devices. You can connect your NBC Sports Live account to the matching Kodi addon, making NBC Sports Live Extra a great addon for NFL on Kodi.

You can purchase an NBC Sports Live account for $25 a month. NBC has a large number of NFL contracts for various games throughout the season. That includes exclusive rights to broadcast the SuperBowl LII for the 2018-2019 NFL season.

Available easily through the Official Kodi Addon Repository, NBC Sports Live Extra is an excellent source of NFL on Kodi.

NFL Game Pass

NFL Game Pass offers up almost every game available for the 2018-2019 season, with the exception of some NY Jets and NY Giants games (regional broadcast right restrictions apply here). For $99, or $29.99 split over 4 installations, Game Pass is an almost perfect NFL Kodi addon.

There’s an NFL Game Pass Kodi addon available through the Official Kodi Addon Repository. You’ll just need to connect to your account using your login information, and you’ll be ready to live stream NFL games to your heart’s content.

This addon was updated in June 2017 to fix some issues. The developers plan to update it before the new season begins to make it viable with the updated NFL Game Pass updated streaming partner.

As of 2018, NFL Game Pass is the primary NFL provider in a growing list of countries. You can now use NFL Game Pass in more Asian countries, to include:

  • Hong Kong
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore
  • Taiwan
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Cambodia
  • Laos

This also means that you have more options for locations to connect to via VPN if you’re traveling outside of these regions and want to watch NFL on Game Pass.

PlayStation Vue (PS Vue Addon)

mlb on kodi
PS Vue is the Kodi addon that connects users to their PlayStation Vue account. PlayStation Vue is a relatively new service from Sony that offers up live streaming and on-demand content in a similar fashion to services like Sling and FuboTV.

While PlayStation Vue is more expensive a service than some of the other options available (coming in at $39.99 per month), the service also offers up a much higher-quality service than some of the other options on the list. Additionally, you can access your PlayStation Vue account through the addon, so long as you enter in your user account information before trying to load the addon.

The PlayStation Vue addon, PS Vue, is available in the Official Kodi Addon Repository.

Sportsnet Now

mlb on kodi sportsnet
Sportsnet Now is a paid live-streaming service for the Canada-based Sportsnet channel. Through Sportsnet Now, users will have access to a large swath of both US and Canadian sports streams. Sportsnet Now is primarily available for Canadian residents, although access may still be possible for those outside of Canada, particularly if a VPN is used.

Users can find the Sportsnet Now addon in the Official Kodi Addon repository. As with most other options on this list, access to sports streams through the addon will require a valid username and password.

BBC iPlayer

The British BBC iPlayer is likely not a location many sports fans consider when it comes to NFL content. However, there is a sizable American Football fanbase in the UK, and the BBC provides some live content. While this primarily includes a handful of games that occur in the UK, users can also find access to highlights and clips and the occasional live game through the BBC as well. With the BBC iPlayer Kodi addon, you can access all of the games available on iPlayer.

Additionally, the Superbowl has been live cast on the BBC for a few years, making the iPlayer a great place to catch the biggest game of the 2018-2019 NFL season.

The BBC iPlayer can be accessed by any UK resident with a valid TV License. Those traveling outside of the UK can also access the BBC iPlayer using a VPN to bypass geographic content blocking.

The PlayOn Kodi addon provides access to PlayOn services through Kodi. PlayOn is a streaming video DVR service that allows you to save movies and TV shows on a cloud server, or on your computer, for playback from other devices. Recently, PlayOn added support for DIRECTV NOW, meaning you can record live matches through PlayOn that you may have missed if you join together these two quality services.

You can find PlayOn in the Official Kodi Addon Repository.

Where to watch NFL regular season 2018

The NFL has very expensive contracts in place with the following US-based networks:

  • CBS
  • NBC
  • Fox
  • ESPN
  • NFL Network

This means any streaming service that gives you access to some or all of these will get you access to NFL games.

Several great streaming options exist that provide adequate, legally-available coverage at a relatively low cost. Those include:

  • Sling TV
  • fuboTV
  • YouTube TV
  • Hulu with Live TV
  • PlayStation Vue
  • DAZN (available September 10 in the US, but no NFL contracts in the US at present)
  • DirecTV Now
  • NFL Game Pass
  • CBS All Access (CBS only)
  • Over-the-air (OTA) TV antenna

Of these, you’ll find that and OTA digital TV antenna is the cheapest option, but you’ll only be able to watch local games.

Sling TV is probably the best, cheapest option if you want to see almost every game made available through cable TV. Through Sling TV, you can get access to NBC, Fox, NFL Network and ESPN for $40 per month. You’ll need to order Sling’s Orange+Blue package to get all four. The only channel you won’t get is CBS, as CBS restricts its live streaming to only over-the-air antennas and its CBS All Access streaming service.

That said, the other options on the list all come in under $45 per month and provide a mixture of ways to watch most NFL games, including regular season match-ups.

Unofficial live streaming NFL addons for Kodi

One of the primary reasons many users turn to Kodi is the prospect of “free” tv and movies. However, the vast majority of Kodi addons that promise this type of content do so through pirated streams. Although there are many legitimate third-party addon developers in the community creating perfectly legitimate options for Kodi users, a large number of third-party addons focus on pirated streaming.

The NFL content provided in these most third-party addons is unofficial. The NFL does not condone these pirated streams, making those third-party addons offering such content at no cost illegitimate. Comparitech does not recommend Kodi users turn to the addons listed below, which you may find listed and recommended on other websites.

What it is: SportsDevil is a Kodi addon that streams from all of the networks listed above. SportsDevil draws from pirate sites that stream live content through various channels. That includes pirated streams for paid cable network channels such as ESPN and broadcast networks. SportsDevil is one of the more popular Kodi addons for pirated live streaming.

Why should you avoid it? Simply put, SportsDevil offers no legal streaming options. Its emphasis on sports streaming, in particular, makes it a significant pirate streaming outlet considering the fact that no sports streams are legally available here. Additionally, SportsDevil lives in many different repositories. Downloading the wrong one could lead to installing malware. We do not recommend users turnt o SportsDevil for sports streaming.

What is it? Castaway is an old and unsupported addon. However, Castaway still has some regular users.  Castaway utilizes many of the same sources as SportsDevil.

Why should you avoid it? Castaway’s streams should be considered in the same manner as those found through SportsDevil. Legal streaming options do not exist through here for OTA networks or paid cable networks. We do not recommend using Castaway for streaming NFL games. Additionally, given Castaway does not receive support anymore, it’s a particularly bad choice even without support because it pirates streams.

cCloud TV

What is it? cCloud TV is one of the most popular live TV streaming addons for Kodi. This live TV and on-demand streaming addon for Kodi includes live video from all of the networks that stream NFL games. cCloud TV offers few legal channels.  cCloud specializes particularly in pirated streams for which it does not have a right to offer.

Why should you avoid it? cCloud TV offers a fair number of good streaming options through for over-the-air and cable networks, but also offers this content through dubious means. We do not recommend cCloud TV for live streaming NFL content, given that cCloud and the sites that it uses do not have a right to access and rebroadcast the content.
