Methodology: Choosing the best VPNs for Bangladesh

It’s difficult enough to find a VPN that can be trusted to keep you safe online, and users in Bangladesh also need their chosen service to be capable of bypassing strict online censorship. Needless to say, not just any provider will do. We considered which aspects of a VPN are most important for this kind of task, and decide to test providers in the following five key areas:

Speed

With so many VPNs claiming to be the fastest, the only real way of reaching some sort of objective decision is by testing them. With this in mind, we subjected each provider three speed tests while connected to their US servers: one in the morning, one at noon and one in the afternoon.

We used the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app for measurements, and rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps. If your connection speed is much slower, you can still use the chart below for comparison, as it scores providers on their speeds relative to one another.

NordVPN was the fastest provider overall, with Surfshark a very close second. Both VPNs can support multiple users carrying our bandwidth-intensive activities. Although all VPNs slow your connection a little, these two have the least impact — which is great news when every Mbps counts.

Network suitability

We started by scoring each provider on the number of server locations it had in Asia. We then scored them on the number of servers they had overall. Finally, we scored their ability to access geo-restricted services. This meant testing them with hard-to-access platforms such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

These scores were weighted and summed to generate an overall score out of 10 for each VPN.

How free and open is the Bangladeshi internet?

The first signs of trouble in Bangladesh emerged after the passage of the 2006 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) act. Applied for the first time in 2013, it was used by the government to arrest four bloggers who had voiced concerns over the rising tide of religious extremism and other social issues. Penalties under the law were increased the same year, ranging from incarceration of a minimum of 7 years up to a maximum of 14. The same amendment also allowed police to make arrests without seeking prior warrants.

In 2015, there was even more violence. A number of fatal attacks by extremists targeting online bloggers, along with the arrest of prominent journalist Probir Shikdar, led to an ‘environment of fear’ as described by advocacy body Freedom House. This forced netizens in Bangladesh into an environment of self-censorship.

A further crackdown on the internet was witnessed between 2016 and 2017. A total of 35 news websites were blocked by the government on a baseless charge of being biased towards the opposition party. 300 people were also arrested under the same ICT laws as mentioned earlier, with some remaining in state custody for several weeks.

In 2024, Freedom House stated that internet freedom in Bangladesh “continued to decline” ahead of the 2024 general elections.
