How we found the best VPNs for an Egyptian IP: methodology

Many VPNs don’t offer servers in Egypt and thus don’t allow you to get an Egyptian IP address. Despite this, there are still more than enough VPN services that do. As such, we used our methodology to help narrow down the options and find the very best VPNs available.

Network suitability

In order to get an IP address for Egypt, you’ll need access to servers in Egypt. This was the first criterion we assessed when evaluating VPNs on the market. However, we also scored providers on the number of countries they supported overall. That way, you can access a wider range of geo-blocked and government-censored content. As this also requires VPNs to have strong unblocking abilities, we tested them against a range of restricted websites and services.

The scores for each of the above tests were weighted and then combined to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider.

NordVPN and ExpressVPN both scored 9.8 out of 10. As well as being able to provide multiple IP addresses in Egypt, they both have servers in more than 100 countries. Furthermore, they were able to access all of the streaming services that we tried them with.

Speed

It’s little good having access to VPN servers if they’re too slow for browsing, let alone streaming and torrenting. We tested the speeds of each provider’s Egyptian servers multiple times over the course of a day.

To approximate the average user’s experience, we rate-limited the base connection speed of our test computer to 250 Mbps since this is roughly the average US home broadband speed. Once connected to a VPN server, measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed test app.

The results for each provider were averaged and then converted to a score out of 10 relative to the other tested VPNs. This makes a meaningful side-by-side comparison possible.

Security and privacy

Browsing the web of course comes with some security risks, particularly if you’re connecting to public Wi-Fi hotspots. Internet censorship in Egypt

Egypt has a troubled history when it comes to online censorship. During the 2011 Egyptian revolution, the government blocked social media sites like Twitter and eventually even cut off access to the internet entirely to prevent protesters from communicating with each other or spreading news of what was happening to the outside world.

These restrictions have been loosened in recent years, though in 2018, the government passed the Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes Law. While this legislation was primarily designed to halt the influx of extremist websites, it has also been used to justify blocking several entirely legitimate sites, including Al Jazeera, Huffington Post, and Human Rights Watch, ostensibly for spreading “fake news.”

In addition to blocking various news sites, VoIP services like Skype, WhatsApp, and FaceTime are inaccessible, although in some cases, the text chat features still work.
