- Most of Egypt’s streaming services are geo-blocked, meaning they can’t normally be accessed from other countries.
- A Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help you communicate safely, browse free from regional limitations, and stream your favorite Egyptian shows from abroad.
- I tested more than 70 popular VPN providers to see which are the best for getting an Egyptian IP address abroad.
- NordVPN is my top pick for getting an IP address from Egypt. It’s extremely quick, with a strong security focus, and first-class streaming ability.
Contrary to popular belief, your online activities are not private. In fact, everyone from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to your network administrator to the government (in some countries) can see what you do on the internet. Needless to say, this can be dangerous, particularly in countries in which citizens have limited rights and freedom. VPNs are the easiest way to protect yourself from this kind of monitoring.
A VPN allows you to change your IP address, masking your true location and making it appear as if you’re located somewhere else. It also encrypts your traffic, making it unreadable to any third-party observers. This means that you can use a VPN to get an Egyptian IP address, bypass government-imposed internet blocking, and access geo-restricted sites or services from anywhere in the world.
In a hurry and want to know the best VPNs for Egypt? Check out my shortlist below:
- NordVPN: My top pick VPN for Egypt. Virtual server locations for Egypt, effective obfuscation, and excellent connection speeds. Comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

- Total VPN: Speedy and reliable provider with secure servers in Egypt and other countries. Boasts strong streaming ability and a no-logging policy.
- ProtonVPN: Privacy-first provider with roughly a dozen Egyptian servers. Delivers blazing-fast speeds and can access a ton of region-locked services. 24/7 customer support.
- ExpressVPN: Works flawlessly in restrictive countries. Doesn’t collect logs, includes split tunneling, and DNS leak protection. Automatically obfuscates traffic.
- IPVanish: Offers virtual server locations for Egypt. Fast connection speeds, no connection limit, and an audited no-logs policy.
- CyberGhost: A beginner-friendly VPN with servers optimized for streaming, gaming, and P2P. Fast connections and strong security.
- PureVPN: A quick, effective way to get an IP address from Egypt while traveling. Speedy servers, exceptional unblocking ability, and easy-to-use apps for all major platforms.
Many VPNs claim to protect your privacy and offer a fast, reliable connection but most (especially free VPNs) limit your connection speed or leak information.
We regularly test the top 70 VPNs for security and speed and this list only includes VPNs which are fast, reliable and are highly rated for privacy and security. Plus we only recommend VPNs which offer a full-money back guarantee allowing you to try them risk free.
How to get an IP address for Egypt
It’s easy to get an Egyptian IP address with the right VPN; just follow the simple steps below.
Here’s how to get an Egyptian IP address with a VPN:
- Begin by signing up for a suitable service. Most don’t have Egyptian servers, so be sure to check the server locations in advance. I recommend NordVPN.
- Download and install the VPN app, making sure to get the appropriate version for your operating system.
- Sign in to the VPN app, and then connect to one of its Egyptian servers. This will change your IP address to Egypt.
- That’s it: you should now be able to access geo-blocked sites and services!
- Having trouble? Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies, then reloading the page.
If you’d like to watch a particular event live, I strongly recommend performing the steps above well in advance. This lowers the chance that you’ll miss part of it and ensures that if anything doesn’t work as expected, you’ll still have time to contact your VPN’s customer support team.

My criteria for Egyptian IP VPNs
The sheer number of VPNs vying for your attention makes it difficult to decide which is best for a given task. This is especially the case here, where most services can’t do what you want. To find the best VPNs for obtaining an Egyptian IP address, I tested providers in the following areas:
- Network suitability: I started by checking whether providers had servers (virtual or physical) capable of providing users with an IP address in Egypt and a variety of other countries. I then checked whether they were able to obfuscate traffic to evade detection by the Egyptian authorities.
- Speeds: To find VPNs that were quick enough for streaming, gaming, and torrenting, I carried out multiple speed tests while connected to each provider’s servers in Egypt.
- Security and privacy: To ensure that your online activities are kept hidden from potentially malicious third parties, I’ve only recommended VPNs that performed well against my 16 security and privacy test metrics.
- Ease of use: To get you an Egyptian IP address with the least fuss possible, I looked for providers that were easy to use. This was evaluated using 10 different metrics.
- Value for money: As well as looking for VPNs with affordable subscriptions, I also looked for those with long-term discounts and money-back guarantees. In all, I gauged relative value using eight different metrics.
You can read more about how I test and rank the VPNs I recommend in the methodology section below. First, let’s take a closer look at the ones that most impressed me.

NordVPN is my top choice VPN for gaining an Egyptian IP address. This veteran provider has servers in an impressive 120+ countries worldwide. For Egypt, it uses a virtual location that gives users an IP address in Cairo.
The provider is capable of unblocking a huge range of popular streaming sites. I had no problems accessing typically troublesome services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer. It also comes with a smart DNS feature that lets you access geo-restricted content using VPN-incompatible devices such as games consoles and smart TVs.
In my speed tests, NordVPN achieved an overall average of 200.14 Mbps. This is an excellent result and meant I could game and stream in 4K without any annoying interruptions.
NordVPN uses 256-bit AES encryption to keep your connection secure and away from the prying eyes of your ISP, the Egyptian state, and hackers. It includes a network kill switch, ad and malware blocking, obfuscation, split tunneling, MultiHop servers and one-click access to the Tor network. The provider adheres to a strict no-logs policy, meaning your online activities are never recorded. This has been verified several times via independent audits.
NordVPN has apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Amazon Fire TV. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are available, while NordVPN can also be manually configured to work with select wireless routers. With a single account, you can have up to 10 simultaneous connections, so all of your family can enjoy the same security. Live chat support is available 24/7.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a Cairo IP that reliably passes Egyptian geo-checks
- You’re traveling to high-censorship countries and want solid obfuscation
- You want SmartDNS for consoles/TVs that can’t run VPN apps
- You want RAM-only infrastructure and an audit no-logs policy
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need a VPN with physical rather than virtual servers in Egypt

Surfshark allows you to get an IP address for Egypt via servers virtually located in Cairo. Overall, the provider has servers in 100 countries. This makes it easy to connect to a server close to your physical location and bypass restrictions.
Surfshark works with many popular streaming services. I used it to access Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, and Hulu without issue. It also worked with multiple Netflix libraries.
When you subscribe to Surfshark, you can access 24-hour live chat and email support. You can also secure as many devices as you like simultaneously. This is handy for sharing an account with friends or family.
In my speed tests, Surfshark averaged an impressive 196.92 Mbps. This allowed for seamless streaming and video calling.
As internet freedom and the rights of internet users in Egypt are very limited, VPN security is particularly important. With Surfshark, you’ll get high-end encryption, protection from DNS and IPv6 leaks, and a kill switch. You can even connect to a MultiHop server for an extra layer of encryption. This provider has a proven no-logs policy, so you know your data is protected.
Surfshark has apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Amazon Fire TV. I personally like that its Linux app has a full GUI, but others may prefer the command line. The provider also offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. However, if you’d like to use Surfshark with your Wi-Fi router, you’ll need to manually configure the connection.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need unlimited simultaneous device connections
- You are on a budget, as this is one of the most affordable options in the market
- You want consistent streaming speeds
- You require obfuscation and MultiHop for extra privacy

Total VPN users can choose from over 1,800 server spread throughout 80+ countries including Egypt. During my time with it, this service did a great job of bypassing online limitations from the likes of Disney Plus and Amazon Prime Video. It’s a great choice for anyone hoping to stay caught up on their favorite shows while traveling abroad.
You can connect up to five devices at the same time and there’s 24/7 help through a ticket system on Total VPN’s website.
Everybody uses the internet differently so I always look for VPNs that are quick enough for any task. I tested Total VPN’s Egyptian servers at three different times of day on a 250 Mbps connection. The average download speed was 178.23 Mbps, which is a fantastic result and well above what’s needed for a seamless streaming experience. See for yourself:
When it comes to security, Total VPN has you covered. It keeps you safe using a blend of 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch (on most platforms), and automatic protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. Most importantly, this provider refuses to keep any logs of your activities. For additional privacy, you can enable the split tunneling feature or swap over to the Hydra protocol (which helps you browse the web even on networks that usually block VPNs outright).
Total VPN offers beginner-friendly apps for iOS, Windows, Android, and MacOS. Unfortunately, this service doesn’t support Linux devices or routers at the time of writing.
Buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for a VPN with ultra-fast servers in Egypt
- You’d like to be able to watch all kinds of region-locked channels
- You want a service that makes it as easy as possible to stay safe
- You’re in the market for both a VPN and a virus protection app
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want to protect lots of devices at the same time
- You need advanced features like MultiHop or port forwarding

ProtonVPN has more than 15,000 servers available in 120+ countries. This includes Egypt, where it has approximately 20 servers in Cairo.
In addition to unblocking some of the most stubborn streaming platforms, I found it to be a great choice for video calling, torrenting, and playing online games (though less suitable for bypassing country-wide censorship in places like China).
In my tests, ProtonVPN delivered average speeds of 165.89 Mbps. This means you’ll be able to stream, game, and torrent while using an Egyptian IP address.
Users can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously and chat with staff directly if anything goes wrong.
Very few services offer as much customization as ProtonVPN. If you’d like, you can set up port forwarding, split tunneling, and a speed booster or connect to multi-hop Secure Core servers for even greater privacy. Naturally, it also uses uncrackable encryption, a kill switch, leak protection, and tracker-blocking to keep you as safe as possible. Best of all, ProtonVPN has a professionally verified no-logs policy and accepts multiple anonymous payment methods.
ProtonVPN offers apps for Linux, macOS, iOS, Windows, and Android. If you’d like to connect more than 10 devices at once, you can manually install it on most home routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want advanced privacy features like split tunneling and port forwarding
- You want to pay for your VPN anonymously with Bitcoin
- You need more customization in your VPN setup
- You want over a dozen servers in Cairo
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You are a beginner (advanced features might be overwhelming)
- You are looking for the most affordable option

ExpressVPN has more than 3,000 servers across 105 countries, including Egypt. It enables you to access websites blocked by the governments as well as services like Netflix from anywhere in the world.
ExpressVPN provides solid speeds suitable for anyone looking to stream live TV without interruption. In my tests, it averaged 140.51 Mbps. As a rough guide, this is fast enough for streaming in 4K on five devices at the same time.
The provider is highly secure, with 256-bit AES encryption, perfect forward secrecy, protection against DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks, and a kill switch.
I like that ExpressVPN allows you to sign up anonymously by paying with Bitcoin, and also that it automatically obfuscates traffic. It logs no personally identifiable information, so you don’t have to worry about your activities being traced back to you either way. If you run into problems, you can contact support 24/7 over live chat.

CyberGhost has one of the largest networks, with over 10,000 servers across 100+ countries, including 40+ servers in Egypt. It also offers special NoSpy servers designed for browsing freely in countries with strict online censorship.
CyberGhost can reliably unblock a wide range of popular streaming services — I successfully used it with BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu during testing.
Speed-wise, it’s fast enough for streaming in 4K on several devices at once. In my tests, its average download speed was 142.12 Mbps. This means it’s also suitable for everything from multiplayer gaming to video calling.
There’s minimal configuration required, as CyberGhost’s security tools come pre-configured. PureVPN operates servers in 65+ countries, including Egypt. It’s a great way to continue using your favorite platforms during a trip abroad. It worked first time when I tried it out with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus.
While connected to one of the provider’s servers in Egypt, I measured speeds of between 62.02 Mbps and 67.87 Mbps. PureVPN’s overall average was 64.07 Mbps, which is a fair bit slower than the above providers. Nevertheless, it’s still fast enough for streaming, torrenting, or accessing Egypt-only sites.
This VPN cares about your privacy. It only uses industry-approved protocols, relies on unbreakable encryption, and refuses to log any details about which sites you visit. There are plenty of additional safeguards, too, such as a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and tracker-blocking (though this last feature is only included on Plus and Max plans). Thanks to PureVPN’s top-tier obfuscation, you can use it in countries with strict censorship, like China or Egypt. The only downside is that there’s no way to pay anonymously.
PureVPN has apps for Android, Windows, iOS, macOS, and Linux. These are newcomer-friendly and offer 24/7 customer support (available over live chat). PureVPN can also be manually configured to work with most routers, letting you secure every device you own.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want access to platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+
- You want a great value VPN that doesn’t compromise on service
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need more advanced features like port forwarding
- You need a more extensive network of servers
FAST AND RELIABLE:PureVPN is speedy, privacy-conscious, and very easy to use. Sidesteps just about any form of online blocking and lets you speak directly to customer support staff. Still unsure? Don’t worry: every subscription includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Internet censorship in Egypt
Egypt has a troubled history when it comes to online censorship. During the 2011 Egyptian revolution, the government blocked social media sites like Twitter and eventually even cut off access to the internet entirely to prevent protesters from communicating with each other or spreading news of what was happening to the outside world.
These platforms are no longer banned but things have not improved since. In fact, in 2018, the government passed laws supposedly designed to help take down extremist websites. It just so happens that these laws have been used to justify blocking entirely legitimate sites like Al Jazeera, Huffington Post, and Human Rights Watch, ostensibly for spreading “fake news.”
Freedom House’s 2025 report rates Egypt as “Not Free”, with a score of 28/100. Though internet access is fairly widespread, regulators are heavily influenced by the government, self censorship is rife, and civilians can be tried in military courts for something as simple as posting an opinion critical of the government on social media. Political activists face life sentences for mobilizing, and in the last few years, people have been sentenced to lengthy jail terms for:
- Criticizing government ministers online
- Reporting on Egyptian discrimination of Coptic Christians
- Singing verses from the Quran
- Promoting body positivity on TikTok
- “Undermining Egyptian family values”
In addition to blocking various news sites, VoIP services like Skype, WhatsApp, and FaceTime are inaccessible, although in some cases, the text chat features still work. The websites of popular VPN services are also blocked, so if you’re traveling to Egypt, I strongly recommend installing your VPN beforehand. It might also be a good idea to make a note of customer support email addresses and manual installation instructions, preferably in a password-protected file.
What to do if your VPN isn’t working properly
In theory, VPNs are pretty easy to use: just select your preferred location and hit the connection button; that’s why it’s so frustrating when things don’t work as expected. There’s no need to worry though: I’m about to explain, step by step, how you can fix the most common VPN problems and get an Egyptian IP address quickly. Just follow these steps:
- First, make sure that the VPN is actually turned on, and that you’re using a server in Egypt. I know, I know — it’s obvious but you’d be surprised how often people forget to check this.
- Next, use Comparitech’s IP address checker to see if your VPN’s servers are actually pointing to Egypt. If not, I’d suggest trying a few others or enabling the DNS and IPv6 leak protection features in the settings.
- Clear your browser’s cache and cookies. This ensures that the sites you’re using can’t rely on old location data (which may be causing your issue).
- If your VPN has a stealth mode or some form of obfuscation, enable it now. I’ve also seen some built-in ad-blockers cause problems when streaming, so disabling this is worth a shot.
- If you’re still not having any luck, it’s looking like your VPN may not be able to unblock the platform you want to use. Still, I’d suggest asking your VPN’s support team just in case — every provider in this list offers live chat-based support so getting help is as quick and easy as possible.

Can I use a free VPN instead?
Free VPNs might seem tempting, but I advise against using them, particularly in Egypt. To begin with, they tend to have more users than their networks can support, which means you’ll likely experience extremely slow speeds and stuttering video, if it loads at all. Additionally, there are real consequences if you’re caught accessing a site that the Egyptian government has blocked; many paid VPNs can afford to stand up to requests for your information but this is much less likely to happen with a free service.
Server networks are expensive to build, so how can a free service afford to operate? Simply put, they profit from their users in other ways. For instance, most insert large ads into the pages you visit. Some go even further, though, storing tracking cookies on your device and harvesting information about your online activities to be sold later. VPNs are designed to help you take control of your own personal information, but by acting in this way, free services defeat the purpose of the technology.
There’s also the security aspect to consider. In a recent study, researchers tested 283 free VPNs and found that over 37% included malware. Additionally, 84% leaked personal information over IPv6, and 18% never used encryption. These risks aren’t limited to little-known companies, either: in 2016, Hola was caught facilitating a botnet with its users’ idle bandwidth.
The best way to protect yourself online is to use a reputable VPN with a proven history of standing up for its customers’ privacy.
What else can I do with an IP address for Egypt?
You might have received an email or text in the past telling you that someone has attempted to log in to one of your accounts from another country. These days, most services include this feature and while it’s designed to combat fraud, it doesn’t differentiate between a foreign attacker and someone trying to access their online banking account on vacation. However, by connecting to a server in your home country, you’re far less likely to receive an alert, and won’t have to verify your identity before being able to access your chosen service.
Public Wi-Fi networks are everywhere, which is good because when you’re in an unfamiliar country, you never know when you’ll need to Google something. The problem is that there’s no way to tell who’s monitoring these networks. By encrypting your traffic, VPNs allow you to take advantage of these networks without worrying about whether or not your online activities are being intercepted.
Is it illegal to get an IP address for Egypt?
Fortunately, VPNs are legal in most countries and this includes Egypt. Despite this, IFEX reported in November 2020 that at least 600 sites had been blocked by authorities in Egypt since May 2017. This included nearly 400 VPN and proxy sites. However, most of these VPNs are now accessible again in the country.
As long as you’re getting an IP address for Egypt from a country in which VPNs are legal, you shouldn’t have any problems. Just be sure to stay within the confines of the law (no torrenting copyrighted material, for example) to be safe.
Why do so few VPNs have Egyptian servers?
There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, it depends on how many people in Egypt use VPNs. Setting up and maintaining VPN servers takes a lot of work and investment, so providers may prioritize specific locations over others. If there is little demand, or people do not use the internet in a way that requires a VPN, then providers might not set up servers in Egypt.
Another factor is the laws and regulations in Egypt. Some countries have strict rules around VPN usage, making it difficult for providers to set up servers there. This is often the reason why providers, such as NordVPN, use virtual rather than physical servers in Egypt, allowing them to offer their users a service while avoiding any potentially privacy-invasive laws.
