Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for Netflix Canada

Before making any VPN recommendations, we carried out a series of tests in several key areas:

Streaming suitability

We started by checking which providers had servers in Canada and in how many locations within the country. If your VPN has few Canadian servers, your closest could be hundreds of miles away, which can have a real impact on your streaming speeds.

We then scored them on their ability to access Netflix Canada as well as other regional libraries and Canadian channels such as Crave, TSN, and Global TV. Finally, we tested their ability to access other popular streaming platforms — after all, most people use more than one streaming service.

These scores were weighted and then combined to generate overall scores out of 10 for each provider for comparison.

Speed

Netflix’s guidelines recommend at least 25 Mb/s for 4K streaming, so a decent connection speed is vital. We tested each provider’s download speed three times while connected to their servers in Canada.

To make the tests more representative, we rate-limited our test machine to 250 Mbps (which is a little slower than the median fixed broadband speed in the US). We used the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app for accuracy.

The results for each VPN were averaged and then converted to a score out of 10 relative to the other tested providers. This makes a side-by-side comparison possible.

NordVPN was the fastest provider overall. Surfshark, with a score of 9.3 out of 10, wasn’t far behind. While all VPNs cause some drop in performance, NordVPN and Surfshark cause the least, making them excellent options for those who want to preserve every last Mbps of their base connection speed.

Security and privacy

We only recommend VPNs that offer 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a no-logs policy. This is just a baseline. We prefer providers that also do well against the other test metrics outlined in the table below.

To simplify things, we scored each test metric and combined the results to generate the following comparison chart.
