Change region - Amazon Prime

Quick Summary
In Short

  • The Amazon Prime Video US library is huge, but Amazon blocks users in other countries from viewing many titles.
  • It is possible to use a VPN to access content from other countries by routing your traffic through a server in another region.
  • I tested and compared 78+ VPNs to find which reliably allow access to Prime Video in different regions and provide the most stable streaming experience.
  • NordVPN is my top recommendation to unblock Amazon Prime Video. It’s quick, capable, and pays close attention to your security. Works with most streaming platforms and multiple Prime Video regions.

Technically, you can stream Amazon Prime Video from almost anywhere in the world. However, American travelers are in for a shock: there are different content libraries for each country, and Prime Video US has a significantly larger library than most. Don’t worry, though: I’ll soon explain how to change your Amazon region so that you can continue streaming American-exclusive Prime Video content from abroad.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) route your traffic through servers in another country, hiding your true location and allowing you to access regional content from anywhere in the world. This might all sound a bit technical, but suffice it to say that using a VPN makes unblocking Prime Video US nice and easy. They’ll also enhance your security, shielding your activities from hackers and hotspot owners while preventing local ISPs from putting limits on what you can access.

Below, I’ll walk you through the entire process of changing your Prime Video region from start to finish. I’ll also address some of the most common problems you might encounter and explain how to resolve them. Stick with me and you’ll be streaming your favorite US content in no time.

How to unblock Amazon Prime Video US with a VPN

It’s quick and easy to switch your location on Amazon Prime Video (and it doesn’t have anything to do with your account region). Follow these steps to unblock Prime Video US from anywhere.

Here’s how to watch Prime Video USA while traveling abroad:

  1. The first step is to sign up with a suitable VPN provider. I recommend NordVPN, but have also had consistent success unblocking Amazon Prime Video US with these reliable alternatives: Surfshark, Total VPN, ExpressVPN, and IPVanish.
  2. Download and install the VPN app, then log in using the credentials created during registration.
  3. Select a server in the US. In my experience, servers in major cities like New York or Los Angeles tend to be the most reliable when it comes to unblocking streaming platforms.
  4. Log in to your Amazon Prime Video account.
  5. Search for the show you’d like to stream. It should have a Watch Now button – click this. If everything has gone to plan, the video should be playing as though you were still back home in the US!

NordVPN is the best option for changing your Prime Video region abroad. It delivers impressive performance (averaging 223 Mbps in my latest round of testing) and can reliably access stubborn geo-blocked services including several regional Netflix libraries, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and 10Play.

There are thousands of American servers to choose from, a network spanning 120+ countries, and 24/7 support via live chat. Users can secure up to 10 devices at the same time with a single account.

NordVPN servers.
NordVPN has one of the largest server networks available.

NordVPN is extremely strong on security, keeping your activities hidden using uncrackable encryption, a customizable kill switch, and protection against IPv6, WebRTC, and DNS leaks. This VPN has been repeatedly audited to prove that it doesn’t keep any logs, and even boasts an obfuscated protocol named NordWhisper that’s capable of beating the world’s strictest digital censorship in places like like China or the UAE. Additional privacy tools include an ad and tracker-blocker, split tunneling support, and a dark web monitor.

IP leak test.
NordVPN didn’t leak our UK IP address.

This provider’s apps are very easy to use, with server selection and connection taking place right there on the main screen. The sidebar will take you to either the neatly-organized settings menu or pages that control various features included in NordVPN’s Plus and Ultimate plans. Note that NordVPN doesn’t tell you which servers are best for streaming though you can favorite servers for quicker access later if you find one that works well.

The NordVPN dashboard.
NordVPN has well-designed apps with a user-friendly interface.

NordVPN has apps for all major platforms (Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, and Linux). You can also install it manually on VPN-compatible routers. The service also throws in a smart DNS feature, which will let you stream US Amazon Prime on any device that won’t let you install a VPN directly, such as some smart TVs and game consoles (more info below on how to use smart DNS).

Interested? You can use its 30-day money-back guarantee to try NordVPN risk-free.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You’d like consistent access to all popular streaming platforms
  • You demand the fastest available download speeds
  • You’re hoping to watch Amazon on a VPN-incompatible device
  • You want access to a vast array of servers

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You do a lot of torrenting and want port forwarding

Recent NordVPN updates

I update my reviews on a regular basis. VPN providers are constantly adding new features, and my scoring is updated to reflect this. Here are some of the more important improvements that NordVPN has made since the last update:

  • Updates are no longer available for devices running iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 following dropped support (January 2026)
  • Open-sourcing of the Linux platform improves visibility and user accessibility (October 2025)
  • Browser extensions now support timezone spoofing in addition to location spoofing (October 2025)
  • Scam call protection expanded to detect more categories of unwanted calls (September 2025)
  • Enhanced automatic reconnection when internet connection drops (June 2025)

How to stream Prime Video US on mobile devices while abroad

Unblocking region-specific content is always a little trickier on mobile devices. That’s because websites can examine your GPS location and cross-reference that with your IP address to make sure you’re really where you say you are. Here’s how to disable this feature in your device’s settings before attempting to stream Prime Video USA abroad.

On Android, you can do this by swiping down on the home screen and toggling Location off.

On iOS, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select Amazon Prime Video, and disable Precise Location.

Screenshot showing how to disable location settings on Android

GPS is great for finding places of interest nearby, but can cause problems for international travelers trying to stream their favorite shows on a mobile device.

Still, having issues? In that case, ditch the app and watch via the website instead. It may try to force you to open the app, but you can sidestep this issue by forcing it to use the desktop site. In most browsers, this is as simple as tapping the three dots in the top-right and checking the box marked Desktop site.

How to unblock Prime Video US on Smart TVs

There are quite a few ways to access geo-restricted content on a Smart TV. The best method will depend on your device, whether you can access the Google Play Store, and what kind of other hardware is available to you. Below, I’ll cover all methods in order of simplicity:

  • Use a Smart DNS service: Some VPNs (such as NordVPN) offer a Smart DNS service that allows you to access US-only content without installing anything. All you have to do is navigate to your TV’s network settings and change the DNS address to the one provided by your VPN. However, this doesn’t encrypt your traffic and usually only works with American TV.
  • Install a VPN on your TV: If your TV supports the Google Play Store, just install your VPN directly, connect, and stream as normal. This is fairly rare, however, and even if you can install the app, it may not work as intended.
  • Share a VPN connection from another device: It’s possible to connect to a VPN on your laptop or home PC and share the connection. You can either run an Ethernet cable from your computer to the TV or set up a wireless encrypted hotspot. Check out my guides to creating a virtual wifi hotspot on Windows and Mac.
  • Install a VPN on your router: Finally, you can install a VPN on most routers. This is fairly involved and will take an hour or so, but it will secure every single device on the network. This is regardless of your VPN’s connection limit because a router only counts as one device. There’s no need to do anything on your Smart TV either – just connect to the router as normal, and you should be able to stream Prime Video US (provided the router uses an American VPN server).
  • Install a VPN on a secondary streaming device: Even if your TV doesn’t support VPNs itself, you can always install the VPN on a second device such as an Amazon Fire Stick, Raspberry Pi, or NVIDIA Shield.

Why isn’t my VPN working with Amazon Prime Video?

Amazon’s geo-restriction is quite a bit more complex than that of other streaming platforms, which means it can be tricky to determine what exactly is causing your issue. Still, in the almost 10 years that I’ve been testing consumer VPNs, I’ve found that most problems can be resolved by following the troubleshooting process below.

First off, make sure your VPN is active and that you’re using a server in the United States. That sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how often people forget. If this wasn’t the issue, it’s possible that the mismatch between your current location and saved location data is causing Prime Video to throw an error (“Based outside of [country]? Some titles might be unavailable in your current location”). This is nice and easy to fix: just clear your cache and cookies, then reload the page.

Amazon Prime’s VPN or proxy error

Screenshot of Prime Video's unavailable in your location error

If the Watch Now button is replaced by the above message, it means that your VPN wasn’t able to bypass Prime Video’s strict VPN-detection systems.

If this happens, try switching to a different US server. If you struggle to find a good one, contact your VPN’s support team to ask which servers are currently working with Amazon Prime, as these can change.

‘This video is currently unavailable’ error on Amazon

Screenshot of Prime Video's VPN or proxy error

Even if you’re able to access Prime Video with a VPN connection, you’re not out of the woods yet. Anything on the main screen should play properly, but often, searching for specific titles that should be available results in an error saying, “This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location”. There are many potential causes for this, but generally, it means Amazon either knows there’s something strange about your connection or has decided to only show you content that’s available while traveling.

Your best bet here is to clear your cookies and cache, try a server in a major city (such as New York), and activate your VPN’s Stealth mode if one is available. To activate NordVPN’s obfuscated or ‘stealth’ servers, follow this tutorial.

Alternatively, you could try changing protocols; it’s possible Amazon is better at detecting OpenVPN traffic than WireGuard, for instance. If none of this helps, I’d suggest asking your VPN’s support team for help directly. The providers mentioned above all offer one-on-one assistance via live chat.

The site you use matters

Technically, it’s possible to stream Prime Video through two different sites: www.amazon.com and www.primevideo.com. The problem is that primevideo.com seems to have a different set of location-detection tools. It’ll only show your home library, and if you’re abroad, only displays titles that are available worldwide – you can’t even search for content that’s available elsewhere. When in doubt, I’d recommend using www.amazon.com (though many regional sites, including the Canadian and Australian versions, force you to use primevideo.com instead).

Watching Prime Video US with a free VPN

There are a ton of free VPNs out there, and they have one thing in common: they usually claim to offer all of the benefits of a paid service without the cost. As you might expect, that’s too good to be true. Free providers usually have very limited server networks but many users, leading to slow speeds and long wait times. They are also much less likely to work with geo-blocked streaming platforms. In other words, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to watch Prime Video with a free VPN. In addition, most free VPNs come with security issues that make them not worth the risk.

Don’t worry, though! Most paid VPNs include a free trial or a 30-day money-back guarantee. Just pay for a month of coverage upfront, use the service to access Amazon Prime Video US, and if you’re not impressed, cancel to receive a full refund. On the other hand, if you’d like to continue using the VPN after your trip abroad, you can choose a longer subscription to cut the cost.

Which countries have the biggest content libraries on Amazon Prime Video?

Do you want to know how to get the most out of your Amazon Prime Video subscription with a VPN? With a VPN, you can change your IP address to another country, which will let you access the Prime Video library from that region.

Most people want to access the US catalog, as this one is known to offer more shows and movies than other regions. But you may rightly ask: What other regions are worth testing if I want to watch more Amazon Prime content?

You might be surprised to find out that the number of titles available on Prime Video varies wildly between different regions. And each region often has exclusive TV shows and movies due to licensing agreements, and local content designed to appeal to users in specific markets.

That is what makes a VPN so valuable! By spoofing your IP address to another region, you can get tons more value out of your Amazon streaming account.

As of 2026, the countries with the largest Amazon Prime Video content libraries are:

  1. Ireland: 13,018 titles (11,598 movies and 1,420 TV shows)
  2. United Kingdom: 12,740 titles (11,155 movies and 1,585 TV shows)
  3. United States: 12,150 titles (10,372 movies and 1,778 TV shows)
  4. New Zealand: 10,038 titles (8,322 movies and 1,716 TV shows)
  5. Canada: 9,869 titles (7,970 movies and 1,899 TV shows)
  6. Australia: 9,824 titles (7,993 movies and 1,831 TV shows)
  7. South Africa: 9,453 titles (8,119 movies and 1,334 TV shows)
  8. Nigeria: 8.935 titles (8,119 movies and 1,334 TV shows)
  9. Japan: 8,608 titles (5,602 movies and 3,006 TV shows)
  10. Kenya: 8,482 titles (7,306 movies and 1,176 TV shows)

If you’re interested in accessing a specific country’s Amazon Prime Video library, you can use the VPNs recommended earlier in this guide. My top VPNs will let you connect to servers in any of these countries to see how the catalog differs.

Changing country on Amazon Prime Video: FAQs

Does Amazon allow password-sharing?

Yes, but it depends where you are. Subscribers in the US and the UK can share their membership with one additional person in their household. To do this, you need to link your Amazon accounts together. Log in to your Amazon account and go to Accounts & Lists > Your Account. Under Shopping programs and rentals, select Amazon Household. Select Add Adult and follow the prompts.

Now, there’s technically nothing stopping you from sharing your account with someone that doesn’t live with you. However, we’d advise against it. Remember, they’re not just getting access to a streaming service; they’ll also be able to purchase things from Amazon if you have payment information saved.

Will Amazon Prime block me for changing my region?

No, Amazon won’t block you for changing your region or using a VPN. Even though it tries to prevent people from switching regions to access different content, Amazon can’t possibly detect every VPN. Even if it does realize you’re browsing with an active VPN, it’ll just show an error asking you to turn it off.

We’ve never heard any credible reports of users being banned for using a VPN. Not from Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, or any major streaming service. After all, VPNs are legitimate internet security tools, and millions of people use them daily. Banning everyone who accidentally left their VPN on while trying to stream would see a platform’s subscriber numbers plummet – that’s bad for consumers and business, so it’s highly unlikely.

Does Prime Video’s US library have exclusive content?

Absolutely! Subscribers in the US have access to Amazon’s largest library of content, around 12,150 titles. That’s about twice the size of most regions’ catalogs, and it absolutely dwarfs what’s available in Latvia, which has just 830 on-demand titles – although the subscription price does drop in countries with smaller libraries.

Naturally, the exact content changes on a regular basis, but there are plenty of shows that are only accessible in the US catalog. One thing that makes Amazon Prime Video so popular is the Amazon Original Content.

Here are some of the most-watched Amazon Original shows:

  • Reacher
  • The Boys
  • Fleabag
  • Mr. & Mrs. Smith
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
