Our Methodology: How we find the best VPNs for an IP address in Mexico

At Comparitech, we use a precise VPN testing methodology that we have perfected over many years. We use it to test and compare dozens of market-leading VPNs. Below, we have included a list of the areas we focused on when recommending VPNs for a Mexican IP.

Network suitability

We started by checking that providers supported a wide range of countries — not just Mexico. This ensures you have plenty of options if you fancy accessing content in a different region. 

Next, we tested each VPN’s ability to access popular online services such as Netflix and iPlayer. We also made sure that the Mexican servers work with important services such as online banking and Mexican streaming platforms.

The scores for the above tests were weighted and then combined to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider. This makes a side-by-side comparison possible.

We conducted three tests in total: one in the morning, one at noon, and one in the afternoon. Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app, which is more accurate than the browser-based version. To replicate the average user’s experience, we limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps (which is a little slower than the median fixed broadband speed in the US).

The results for each provider were averaged and then converted to an overall score out of 10 for a more meaningful comparison.

Security and privacy

We tested each VPN for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks to be sure that it provides you with watertight security. We checked the VPN protocols and encryption implementation to see whether they provide adequate security for your data in transit. We also looked for a kill switch to ensure the VPN never leaks any data to your ISP outside of the encrypted tunnel.

To simplify the results of our tests, we scored each of the above metrics and then combined them to generate scores out of 10 for each VPN.

While it’s possible to use a free VPN to get an IP address for Mexico, we always advise caution when it comes to free VPNs as they can present several problems. For example, free VPNs tend to have a small network of servers and very few, if any, in Mexico, plus large numbers of users, which leads to the servers becoming overwhelmed. The result is slower speeds and inconsistent connections. Indeed, many VPNs limit your bandwidth in an attempt to manage this.

Streaming Mexican TV shows and movies with a free VPN can be frustrating, with extensive buffering and lag commonplace. Yet just as important as the performance of the VPN is the level of security it can provide.
