Finding VPNs for 7plus: Our methodology

There are hundreds of competing services on the market, and they all advertise aggressively. This makes it extremely difficult to tell which VPNs are secure, reliable, and represent decent value for money.

To help consumers with their decision, we performed a range of tests in five key areas of importance:

Speed

There’s little point being able to access 7plus if the resulting connection causes endless buffering. To avoid this happening to you, we sought out the fastest providers by carrying out multiple speed tests while connected to their Australian servers.

Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app. The test computer was rate-limited to 250 Mbps in order to better replicate the real-world experience of an average user.

Once the results were in, they were averaged, normalized and converted to a score out of 10 for each provider. This makes direct comparison a lot easier.

NordVPN was the highest-scoring provider overall, though Surfshark wasn’t far behind it. Both providers were exceptionally quick during testing and are the best options if you want to watch 7plus in high resolution on multiple devices.

Streaming ability

We started by scoring providers on their ability to access 7plus, 10Play and ABC iview. We then scored them according to whether they worked with the more stubborn streaming services; namely, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer.

Each of the metrics used above was assigned a score based on its relative importance. These scores were summed to generate overall scores out of 10 for comparison.
