How to change your Apple TV iTunes region
Apple TVs come with apps pre-installed. In order to access apps from another region, you’ll have to change the iTunes region on your Apple TV.
Here’s how to change iTunes region on Apple TV: (3rd gen or earlier)
- Go to Settings
- Select iTunes Store
- Go to iTunes Location > Location
- Choose your preferred iTunes region
- Restart your Apple TV for the new apps to appear
- You’ll now be able to watch the content with a suitable VPN such as NordVPN or via a smart DNS
How to change Apple TV iTunes region (4th gen or later)
The process for changing your Apple TV iTunes region is different for the Apple TV 4. In this case, you need to have an iTunes account for the country you’d like to switch to. First of all, you’ll have to sign out of your current iTunes account:
- Select Settings
- Go to iTunes Store
- Select Apple IDs > Sign Out
Now you can create a new iTunes account for the country you want to unblock content from.
Here’s how to change your iTunes location:
- Scroll to the bottom of iTunes and select your preferred country
- Find a free app and select it
- Create a new Apple ID
- Provide a different email address than that of your regular Apple ID
- Select ‘None’ on the payment page
- Enter a valid billing address for the country you’re trying to access
- Log into Apple TV with your new account
How to change Apple TV region with a VPN
The easiest methods to change the region or country of your Apple TV are to configure a VPN connection on your router or use a DNS proxy.
How to use a router to change Apple TV region with a VPN
Apple TV doesn’t support VPNs by default, so you’ll need to configure the VPN on an upstream device. For most of us, that means setting up the VPN on a Wi-Fi router. Connecting your home router to the VPN is one way of changing the region or country of your Apple TV.
Some VPNs make this especially easy since they offer apps for routers. You’ll need to make sure that your router is compatible or buy a pre-configured router. NordVPN, Surfshark, IPVanish, and ExpressVPN all sell pre-configured routers that are already set up to use their VPN servers.
- Sign up for a suitable VPN. I recommend NordVPN.
- Log into the dashboard of your router by opening your web browser and entering 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. You’ll then need to enter your credentials.
- Once you’re on the dashboard, you may find an option to set up a VPN connection. The exact setup process varies, so follow the instructions provided by your VPN provider.
- If your router doesn’t support VPN connections, there’s the option of replacing the router’s firmware with one that supports VPNs. DD-WRT and Tomato are two free and open-source options that I particularly recommend.
Note: Flashing your own firmware requires some tech savvy and can permanently damage your device if not done properly. If you aren’t comfortable with the risks, you may prefer to purchase a pre-configured router like NordVPN’s.
How to use a DNS proxy or smart DNS to change Apple TV region
A DNS proxy or smart DNS is another way in which you change the region of your Apple TV. DNS stands for “Domain Name System” and translates domain names into IP addresses. Opening a website in your browser sends a DNS request to a DNS server, which finds the appropriate IP address. DNS requests are typically sent to the servers of your internet service provider (ISP), which will be in your home country.
Many streaming sites check the origin of DNS requests in order to verify a user’s location. By having your Apple TV send DNS requests to a server in a different country, you can get past these geo-restrictions and unblock Apple TV content from other locations.
Unlike VPNs, Apple TV comes with built-in support for custom DNS servers.
Here’s how to change DNS servers on Apple TV (4th gen and later):
- Access the Apple TV main menu
- Click Settings > Network
- Select Configure DNS > Manual
- Enter the address of your provider’s smart DNS server and click Done
- Restart your Apple TV
How to change DNS servers on Apple TV (3rd gen and earlier):
If your Apple TV is 3rd generation or older, you’ll find that the process is a bit different. You may need to change your location. Here’s what you need to do:
- Navigate to Settings
- Click on iTunes Store and then Location
- Select the appropriate country for the content you’d like to unblock
- Return to Settings
- Click General > Network
- Choose WiFi or Ethernet
- Select Configure DNS > Manual
- Enter the DNS address
- Navigate to Settings > General > Restart in order to restart your Apple TV for the changes to take effect
If you decide to go down this route, I particularly recommend ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer, which is included in the ExpressVPN subscription. It lets you use ExpressVPN’s DNS servers separate from the VPN.
Setting up a virtual router hotspot on your laptop with a VPN
Another way in which you can change your Apple TV region or country is by setting up a virtual router hotspot on your laptop. This allows you to broadcast Wi-Fi from your laptop to other nearby devices, such as an Apple TV. Any device you connect to the hotspot will be routed through the VPN installed on the laptop.
If configuring a physical router or using smart DNS is not an option, you can follow Comparitech’s tutorials on how to set up a virtual router on a Macbook and how to set up a virtual router on Windows.
How I selected the top VPNs for Apple TV
Wondering how I came up with my list of the top VPNs from the hundreds of providers available? I found the best VPNs to change the region or country of your Apple TV by testing the most popular providers in the following key areas:
- Speed: If you’re planning on streaming Apple TV content in 4K, you’ll want a VPN provider that’s up to the challenge. I found the fastest providers by carrying out multiple speed tests while connected to their US servers.
- Streaming features: As well as confirming that each VPN worked with Apple TV, I checked their compatibility with other big-name platforms like Netflix. I also checked whether they were compatible with routers or offered a smart DNS service.
- Value for money: Nobody wants to spend more than they have to on a VPN subscription, which is why I evaluated each provider’s overall worth using eight different value-for-money metrics.
- Security and privacy: To ensure your connection is secure and your online activities remain known only to you, I’ve only recommended VPNs that scored highly against my 16 security and privacy metrics.
- Ease of use: To get you access to the right Apple TV region as quickly as possible, I looked for VPNs that were easy to use, and had strong customer service for help with things like router set up. In all, I used 10 metrics for evaluation.
You can read more about the process I used to rank VPNs in the methodology section below. For now, let’s take a closer look at the ones that made the grade. Note that Comparitech has a separate article if your VPN isn’t working with Apple TV.

NordVPN is my first pick for an Apple TV VPN. This provider has a particularly large network, with over 9,000 servers in more than 118 countries.
During testing, it worked well with Apple TV as well as Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video. In fact, I didn’t come across a platform that it wouldn’t work with.
Helpfully, it comes with a smart DNS feature and instructions on how to use it with an Apple TV.
NordVPN outperformed every other provider in my speed tests. Each of its results exceeded 200 Mbps, which makes it fast enough for smoothly streaming Apple TV content in 4K on eight devices simultaneously.
When it comes to security, NordVPN is one of the best. It uses 256-bit AES encryption and DNS leak protection, while an automatic kill switch ensures that traffic is blocked if your VPN connection drops. What’s more, NordVPN offers several specialty servers, including Double VPN and Dedicated IP. A no-logs policy means your personal data stays private.
To set up NordVPN on your Apple TV, you can install it on your router. While the process is different for each router, NordVPN does provide tutorials. If your router isn’t VPN-compatible, you do have the option of purchasing a router that’s pre-configured with NordVPN. Alternatively, you can set up a VPN connection on a laptop and share it with your Apple TV. If you need help, there’s 24/7 live chat support available.
NordVPN apps are available to download for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV. Browser extensions are offered for Chrome and Firefox. In addition, one subscription allows you to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a VPN that delivers speeds over 200 Mbps for 4K Apple TV streaming
- You need Smart DNS functionality specifically designed to work with Apple TV
- You’re looking for pre-configured routers or detailed router setup guides
- You want to unblock 95% of popular streaming platforms with minimal hassle
- You’re interested in using privacy-enhancing features like Double VPN
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You want streaming-optimized servers clearly labeled by platform
BEST VPN FOR APPLE TV:NordVPN is my #1 pick. It offers preconfigured routers for changing Apple TV country and region. Over 7,300 high-speed servers worldwide. Works with Netflix and offers 24/7 live chat support as well as servers optimized for enhanced privacy. Includes a 30-day money-back guarantee, making it a risk-free deal.

Surfshark is a great budget alternative. Users can either install this service directly on their router or configure its Smart DNS service to change their location on Apple TV.
The service has around 3,200 servers in 100+ countries and works well with numerous streaming services. I had no issues with either Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which says it all really. Better still, unlike most of its rivals, Surfshark lets you secure an unlimited number of devices.
Users can take advantage of the split-tunneling feature to let certain apps bypass the VPN entirely (for instance, so that you can use streaming services from two regions simultaneously). This service has an audited no-logs policy and offers 24/7 support over email and live chat.
This VPN offers effectively uncrackable 256-bit AES encryption, a customizable kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, automatic ad-blocking and malware scanning. My favourite feature, however, is the ID generating tool. This allows you to create an online persona that you can use in place of your real details when signing up to services.
Speed-wise, the provider is extremely quick. It averaged 193.16 Mbps in my tests, which is more than fast enough for streaming, gaming, or torrenting.
Surfshark apps are available for Windows, Android, Linux, MacOS, and iOS. If you’d prefer, you can manually install it on select home routers or buy a pre-flashed router.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want the best budget option that still supports Apple TV router setup
- You need unlimited simultaneous device connections for your household
- You want built-in ad and malware blockers for your network via CleanWeb
- You value high Apple TV streaming speeds (193 Mbps average in tests)
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You dislike slightly cluttered or busy app interfaces
BEST BUDGET VPN FOR APPLE TV:Surfshark lets you connect all the devices you want, provides speedy connections, and unblocks all but the toughest streaming platforms. This security-focused provider even comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Total VPN is a versatile provider with servers in more than 80 countries. While connected, there are very few platforms you won’t be able to access. In addition to Apple TV, I used it with Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer.
Its apps are streamlined, clutter-free, and extremely easy to get the hang of. Each subscription lets you connect five devices at once, and 24/7 support is available via a ticket system.
Streaming is considered a high-bandwidth activity so you’ll need a VPN that can keep up. To make sure Total VPN fits the bill, I tested its servers in the US at multiple points throughout the day (morning, noon, and afternoon) using a 250 Mbps internet connection. This approach allowed me to measure not only its performance but also its consistency, which is important since nobody wants a VPN that’s only fast some of the time. Take a look at my findings:
Following three tests, Total VPN had an average speed of 174.37 Mbps. This puts it firmly amongst the quickest providers I tested and ensures it’s more than capable of 4K video playback. What’s more, there was only 8 Mbps of difference between its highest and lowest results. I was able to play online games, download large files, and make video calls without the slightest interruption.
This provider takes your security seriously. To begin with, it follows a strict no-logs policy, meaning it can’t reveal what you get up to online under any circumstances. There’s also 256-bit AES encryption which currently can’t be cracked, a kill switch in all versions of the app but Windows, and automatic protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. Total VPN also has a couple of other interesting features, like its split tunneling support and custom Hydra protocol that was designed to help you evade VPN-detection systems on networks that normally block this kind of traffic.
Total VPN has its own apps for Windows, Android, iOS, and MacOS.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a balance of affordability, speed (174 Mbps), and ease of use
- You need a TV-specific app and easy Smart DNS or router configuration
- You want a VPN that includes anti-VPN detection via the Hydra protocol
- You prioritize simplicity and fast setup for Apple TV without sacrificing privacy
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re planning to stream Apple TV in countries with heavy censorship
- You want advanced encryption customization or privacy features
STREAM WITHOUT LIMITS:Total VPN makes it as easy as possible to change your Apple TV region thanks to its tvOS app, large network, and exceptional ability to evade detection. What’s more, it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on long-term plans and a two-week guarantee on anything shorter.

ProtonVPN boasts exceptional streaming ability, making it a natural choice for anyone hoping to change Apple TV region. Its network spans an impressive 129+ countries and its overall server count exceeds 18,000.
While connected to to its servers in the US, I recorded speeds averaging 134.91 Mbps. This allowed me to stream in the highest possible quality without interruption.
There’s even a built-in ad-blocker, ensuring you won’t have to wait around for content to start. Just be aware: you can’t choose server locations or reliably access streaming platforms on the free plan. Paid subscriptions also include 24/7 support and a 10-device limit.
Can ProtonVPN keep you safe? Absolutely. It offers uncrackable encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection, plus an independently verified zero-logs policy. I generally recommend ProtonVPN for those who are concerned about being monitored by their ISP or government.
There are plenty of advance features such as split tunneling and port forwarding, plus special Secure Core servers that send user traffic through multiple locations. Bitcoin and cash payments are accepted, making it as easy as possible to register anonymously.
ProtonVPN apps are available for Linux, MacOS, Windows, Android, and iOS. Want to protect more than 10 devices simultaneously? Check the website for manual router setup guides.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a massive 117+ country network for changing your Apple TV region
- You value zero-logs privacy and Bitcoin payments
- You need a VPN that reliably unblocks most region-locked platforms
- You want split tunneling and port forwarding alongside solid streaming ability

ExpressVPN unblocks plenty of geo-restricted content — it worked first time when I used it to access Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, and BBC iPlayer.
The provider’s server network includes more than 3,000 RAM-only servers in more than 105 countries. During testing, I particularly appreciated how quick it was to establish a connection. Most providers take at least a couple of seconds, whereas with ExpressVPN it felt instantaneous. Once established, speeds were solid. In my tests, the provider’s US servers averaged 136.51 Mbps. This makes ExpressVPN an excellent choice for streaming in HD or even 4K.
ExpressVPN provides a high level of security with 256-bit AES encryption. Aside from DNS leak protection and a kill switch, it features split tunneling functionality that lets you route some traffic through the VPN while some devices or applications continue to run on a non-VPN network. This provider doesn’t keep any identifying connection or activity logs of its users.
ExpressVPN offers a couple of convenient ways in which you can change your Apple TV region or country. One option is using MediaStreamer, ExpressVPN’s smart DNS proxy service. While MediaStreamer unblocks content without encrypting your traffic, the ExpressVPN app for routers lets you take advantage of the service’s full functionality.
In this case, there are two options available: install the app on your existing router (be sure to check that your router is compatible) or buy a pre-configured router directly from ExpressVPN. Should you encounter any problems, ExpressVPN offers live chat-based customer support, 24/7.
ExpressVPN offers apps for the following devices: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux. MediaStreamer is compatible with Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Smart TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. VPN browser extensions can be downloaded for Chrome and Firefox.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want an Apple TV-specific Smart DNS option (MediaStreamer)
- You want steady speeds (136 Mbps) across 105+ countries
- You’re looking for support for platforms like Hulu and BBC iPlayer
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for the most affordable VPN
- You need more than eight simultaneous connections
SECURE AND RELIABLE:ExpressVPN operates over 3,000 servers in 105+ countries. Offers a smart DNS proxy service and an app for routers for changing Apple TV region or country. Highly secure service with encryption. Comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

IPVanish stands out for offering fast, reliable connections. It has a network of more than 2,400 servers in 100+ countries. While connected to its UK and US servers I was able to access a good range of streaming services, including BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Disney Plus, and Netflix. IPVanish also works well with Apple TV and is very easy to use with Kodi.
My browsing experience with IPVanish was very smooth, and I was able to stream HD videos without interruption. Unsurprisingly, IPVanish performed well in my subsequent speed tests. While connected to its US servers, I recorded speeds of between 183.67 Mbps and 189.94 Mbps.
This is a VPN that offers excellent value since you can use it on every device you own simultaneously. IPVanish also offers good security with features including 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, and DNS leak protection. Further, this provider has a strict zero logs policy, which only serves to better protect your privacy.
When it comes to using IPVanish with your Apple TV, you can use a DD-WRT, AsusWRT, Merlin, or Tomato router. Not all routers are compatible with VPNs. In this case, you can always buy a VPN router that is already pre-configured with IPVanish. Alternatively, you can share your laptop’s VPN connection with your Apple TV.
You can download IPVanish apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV, while Linux requires manual setup.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need unlimited simultaneous connections for a large household
- You’re a Kodi user (IPVanish is specially optimized for Kodi)
- You want a provider that owns its entire server network

CyberGhost is an exceptional choice for Apple TV users seeking a VPN service with an extensive server network and reliable performance. Boasting over 10,000 servers across 100+ countries, CyberGhost is particularly good for streaming thanks to its labelled servers which point users in the right direction for various streaming platforms. I tried out the servers for Netflix, Max, Amazon Prime, Peacock, and BBC iPlayer. All worked as expected.
Designed with Apple TV users in mind, CyberGhost delivers the speed required for a smooth viewing experience. In my tests, it averaged 140.42 Mbps, with very little variation between individual results.
Setting up CyberGhost on Apple TV is a breeze, with the quickest method being through DNS configuration. Alternatively, users can opt to connect their router to the VPN service for broader coverage.
CyberGhost offers a range of robust security features, including AES 256-bit encryption, a built-in kill switch, DNS and IP leak protection, and a choice of OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard protocols. The service allows up to seven simultaneous connections, ensuring multiple devices in your household are protected.
To support users, CyberGhost offers 24/7 customer service and a generous 45-day money-back guarantee, providing peace of mind and assurance in the quality of their service.
Buy this VPN if:

PureVPN works well with Apple TV and most other region-locked apps — including Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. If you use the streaming servers in the Shortcuts tab, PureVPN will even open the particular streaming website for you.
Speed-wise, PureVPN achieved a solid 138.62 Mbps in my tests. This is fast enough for streaming Apple TV in 4K on up to five devices at the same time without issue.
That’s not all: PureVPN has a generous connection limit, offers 24/7 live chat, and even works in places like China.
While this service seems designed for beginners, it doesn’t compromise on security. Every connection is protected with 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection. I like that obfuscation is automatically enabled as it makes it easy to evade censorship. Admittedly, this is most useful in countries such as China.
Further, PureVPN refuses to keep logs of your activities. I know this is as it’s been independently audited multiple times. There are additional charges for tracker blocking and port forwarding, which is unfortunate, given that other services tend to include these at no extra cost. Still, not everyone will want or need these features, so it’s not the end of the world.
PureVPN offers apps for Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android, and iOS. It works with most types of router too, though you’ll have to configure your connection manually.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a proven zero-logs VPN with multiple independent audits
- You want automatic traffic obfuscation for enhanced privacy
- You need reliable streaming access with speeds suitable for 4K
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need a kill switch on macOS or iOS platforms
- You’re looking for advanced customization options for power users
EFFECTIVE OBFUSCATION:PureVPN is reliable and fast and refuses to compromise on security. Detailed support documentation and one-on-one customer support. Sign up today and you’ll get a 31-day money-back guarantee as well.

Private Internet Access makes my list of the best VPNs for Apple TV due to its smart DNS feature. This worked well for Apple TV during testing. PIA’s streaming servers also worked well with both Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.
The US-based provider has thousands of RAM-only servers spread across 91+ countries. The US servers provided steady speeds that varied between 54.09 Mbps and 84.15 Mbps in my tests.
If you need faster speeds, PIA is one of the few VPNs that allows you to reduce the level of encryption used on your traffic.
PIA can be manually configured on supported routers, which allows you to use the Apple TV app on another device via your router.
It has apps available for most platforms and allows unlimited device connections, letting your entire household stream simultaneously. PIA offers AES encryption, DNS leak protection, and a network kill switch.
PIA is good at accessing providers like Netflix but can struggle with some. You’ll have 30 days to request a refund after joining if you’re not 100% satisfied.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need unlimited simultaneous device connections
- You want customizable encryption to balance security and speed
- You need a massive server network with 10,000+ servers in 91+ countries
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You require consistent access to all streaming platforms
- You want specialized streaming-optimized servers
CUSTOMIZABLE ENCRYPTION:Private Internet Access allows unlimited devices and lets you tweak your encryption level to maximize Apple TV speeds. A 30-day money-back promise is included with all PIA plans.

PrivateVPN is a low-cost VPN service ideal for streaming content on Apple TV. I was also able to access Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer while connected.
A smaller VPN provider, PrivateVPN has around 200 servers located in about 63 countries around the world. For my speed tests, I used its servers in the US. As you can see from the results below, PrivateVPN was significantly slower than the majority of other VPNs in this list.
That said, it was still more than fast enough to stream in 4K on two devices simultaneously. Like PIA, it also allows users to drop the level of encryption to improve speeds.
Aside from using 256-bit AES encryption, PrivateVPN offers DNS and lPv6 leak protection and a built-in kill switch. This VPN has a zero data-logging policy and states that it has no knowledge of what users do online. You can use PrivateVPN with your Apple TV by configuring the service on a compatible router.
PrivateVPN has apps available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV. Manual configuration is required for Linux. A subscription lets you secure up to 10 devices at once.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a low-cost VPN with excellent long-term discounts
- You’re focused primarily on streaming platform access
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need the fastest speeds (significantly slower than other options)
- You want a large server network
IDEAL FOR STREAMING:PrivateVPN has secure servers for uninterrupted streaming. Compatible with Apple TV via select routers. Connect 10 devices simultaneously. Very user-friendly apps as well as strong security with encryption and a kill switch. 30-day money-back guarantee.

Changing Apple TV region: FAQs
Can I use a free VPN to change the region on Apple TV?
It’s unlikely that you’ll find a free VPN that works with Apple TV, never mind one that works well. Most free VPNs require you to use their apps, which makes it impossible to set them up on a router. Even if you did find a way to use a free VPN to change your Apple TV region, you’d more than likely find that there’s a bandwidth limit or data cap. This means that streaming Apple TV content will include a fair amount of buffering and lag.
Aside from simply not being compatible with Apple TV, free VPNs are often unsafe to use. Some will spam you with inappropriate ads, while others even carry malware. Worse still, free VPNs have been known to track your data and sell it to third parties. Unfortunately, this is the price you pay when you choose a free VPN service. After all, they have to make their money somehow.
Overall, it’s just not worth choosing a free VPN, and I recommend paying a couple of dollars a month for a reputable provider. If you’re set on trying to find a VPN for Apple TV for free, consider choosing a quality VPN with a free trial or making the most of the money-back guarantees of the providers listed above.
Which countries is the Apple TV app available in?
While the Apple TV app was previously only available in a small selection of countries, this is no longer the case. In fact, at the time of writing, it’s possible to stream Apple TV in 108 countries including:
- United States
- Australia
- Brazil
- Canada
- France
- Germany
- Mexico
- United Kingdom
- Japan
- India
What can I watch on Apple TV?
Just like its streaming rivals Netflix and Hulu, Apple has started creating its own content in a bid to lure in subscribers. Here’s just a small taste of what’s available on Apple TV+:
- Ted Lasso
- Mythic Quest
- Severance
- Bad Sisters
- Slow Horses
- The Mosquito Coast
- For All Mankind
- The Shrink Next Door
Will I get banned for changing my Apple TV region?
In all of my years of research, I have never heard of someone having their Apple account banned just for using a VPN. VPNs are entirely legal, legitimate privacy tools, after all, and while some people use them to bypass geographic restrictions, that’s not the technology’s primary purpose.
On the plus side, most of the time, your TV won’t even know you’re using a VPN. If something does happen to go wrong with your router installation, you can always ask support staff for help or try a Smart DNS service instead.
Are there any VPNs with dedicated Apple TV apps?
Native VPN support was added to Apple TV from tvOS 17 onwards. Several VPN providers have since released dedicated Apple TV apps. NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN all have Apple TV apps available in the tvOS App Store.
