You’ll find apps for all platforms that come with a kill switch, split tunneling, streaming servers, and more.

NordVPN’s apps and infrastructure have been independently audited. This means you can trust its no-logs policy. Nord never retains usage or location data that could be used to identify your activities. And it is based in Panama, which puts it well out of reach of invasive jurisdictions like the US and the UK.

My speed test revealed that NordVPN is fast, particularly when using its custom NordLynx protocol. Its server network extends to more than 100 countries, and the streaming servers work to watch Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and Paramount+. This makes it ideal to watch home TV streams on vacation. It even works to bypass geoblocks on Smart TVs using its SmartPlay feature (Smart DNS).

Obfuscated servers help to connect in countries that enforce VPN blocks, such as the UAE or China. This makes NordVPN better for digital nomads or users needing to bypass network blocks at work, for example.

Bitdefender VPN, by contrast, is very basic. It offers decent speeds, a kill switch, and solid device compatibility. But it relies on the closed-source Catapult Hydra protocol and lacks advanced features, which is likely to put privacy enthusiasts off. It’s main focus is on antivirus integration, making it great for users who want basic privacy protections bundled with their antivirus. However, as a standalone VPN, it feels slightly overpriced – especially compared to NordVPN.

You can compare these services yourself using their money-back guarantee. If Bitdefender suits you, you’ll be getting robust privacy bundled with a world-class antivirus. However, serious VPN users in need of advanced features like obfuscation, Double VPN (multihop), and split tunneling should opt for NordVPN.

Methodology: How I tested NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN

Deciding on a VPN can lead to a headache if you don’t know which features to look for. Some core VPN features are needed for privacy, while others are extras only needed for specific use cases, such as torrenting or streaming.

Some of what makes one VPN “better” than another will depend on your personal needs. This makes picking a VPN somewhat subjective. Want to use your VPN to watch Netflix on vacation? You’ll need a VPN that works to access your home Netflix catalog. More interested in bypassing workplace blocks to access Discord or Reddit? You’ll need a VPN capable of connecting even when your employer tries to block VPNs.

Although your reason for using a VPN helps shape your decision, there are concrete factors that make some VPNs better than others. Network size, the number of features and settings available, and VPN speeds are all measurable data points that I use to compare VPNs scientifically.

Below, you can see how I compared  Bitdefender Premium VPN to NordVPN.

Here’s how I carried out my head-to-head testing:

• Speed: I tested both VPNs using a dedicated gigabit connection as well as a standard home broadband line. This allowed me to see how each VPN performs at top speeds and under normal, real-world conditions. I ran tests across multiple regions, at different times of day, to account for network noise and calculate averages for direct comparison.
• Network size: Whether you need to access regional TV services or simply want a VPN that delivers fast speeds while traveling to different locations, it’s important to consider not just network size but also server options. I examined and tested each VPN’s network, checking for IP leaks, reliability, and the ability to obtain IP addresses across a broader geographic footprint.
• Security and privacy: I tested each VPN by thoroughly reviewing its privacy policy and security features. I looked for essential protections such as VPN tunnel encryption implementation, DNS leak protection, and kill switch behavior and reliability. Extra points for multi-hop, obfuscation, port selection, and other advanced features.

Whether you are on vacation or simply want to access your streaming accounts at work, you’ll need a VPN with reliable streaming servers. I tested NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN with popular platforms such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and Disney+.

NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN: Price comparison

VPN pricing can be misleading. Some expensive VPNs lack important features, while some low-cost VPNs come with a fully featured setup. This makes it important to consider the price-to-feature ratio. You don’t want a cheap VPN if it doesn’t work properly, and you don’t want to pay extra unless the benefits justify the price.

In the table below, you can see how Bitdefender VPN and NordVPN compare across eight critical value factors. By considering subscription options, including the lowest monthly cost, connection limits, discounts, refund policies, and any useful extras you receive as part of your subscription, I was able to pinpoint which VPN offers better value in the long term.

Please note that I only compared the standalone VPN products. You can also purchase Bitdefender VPN as part of the Bitdefender Premium Security bundle, which includes both antivirus and VPN protection. This raises the cost to $6.67 per month for the first year of the bundle.

As you can see, both of these standalone VPN plans are very close in terms of pricing. This makes NordVPN better value for money overall because it offers a more well‑rounded feature set. Even if you pay slightly more per month on a long‑term plan, NordVPN’s stronger performance and features should justify the difference for most people.

NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN: Speed and reliability comparison

The way a VPN works means that it can slow down your internet. In order to give you robust online privacy, the VPN must encrypt your traffic and route it via a remote VPN server. These processes can slow down your traffic, which is why the VPN must offer fast servers and protocols.

VPN speeds become even more crucial if you pay for high-speed internet or want to use the VPN for data-intensive tasks like HD streaming, gaming, video conferencing, or torrenting. So which of these VPNs will give you better performance?

I tested both VPNs using a dedicated 250 Mbps test server based in Manchester, UK. To make things fair, I tested both VPNs using the fastest protocol available (NordLynx for NordVPN and Hydra for Bitdefender VPN). I ran my tests on multiple VPN locations in the morning, midday, and evening to arrive at averages.

The results of the tests were impressive for both VPNs. Bitdefender had an average download speed of 76.19 Mbps (derived from tests on US, UK, and Hong Kong server locations). That is roughly a 70% drop, which is a substantial reduction. On the other hand, this is still more than enough for 4K streaming. The main caveat is that people who pay for super-fast broadband may feel their speeds slow too much when using Bitdefender VPN.

NordVPN was substantially faster. The average speed across all tests was 163.97 Mbps, representing a drop of 34.41%. This is an impressive top speed, which should give most home users plenty of headroom when streaming in HD and playing data-intensive games.

Winner: NordVPN is better for users who need faster internet speeds.

Network and server locations

NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN both make it part of their core offering to provide access to a wide choice of server locations. This makes it easy to change your IP address to many different countries and cities around the world. As a result, you can use either VPN to access region-locked websites, streaming platforms, or other regionally restricted services.

At the time of writing, NordVPN offers 8,200+ servers in 120+ countries around the world. This makes it one of the most comprehensive consumer VPNs on the market. It also includes servers in 21 US cities, which makes it extremely useful for bypassing blackout games or accessing regional US platforms and services.

The good news is that Bitdefender has greatly expanded its network to compete with market-leading VPN brands like Nord. Over the last 2 years, it has doubled its network to include IP addresses in 110 countries around the globe. This puts it in the top echelon of VPNs for coverage.

It also has servers in 21 different US cities (Ashburn, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Phoenix, Portland, San Jose, Seattle, and St. Louis). This makes it a good option for accessing regional US TV streams and blackout games on ESPN, NHL TV, NBA League Pass, and other sports platforms.

Virtual servers

Bitdefender explains that it uses virtualized servers for some locations, but does not disclose which countries are virtual. Virtualized IPs are not physically hosted in the country you select. Instead, they use clever routing techniques to assign you an IP address in the location you desire.

Unfortunately, Bitdefender does not disclose which locations are physical and which are virtual. As a result, users cannot know where their data is actually being processed, which may be a drawback for anyone who cares about jurisdictional transparency.

NordVPN also uses some virtual server locations; however, unlike Bitdefender, it publicly identifies which servers are virtual inside its apps:

This ensures that users who care about jurisdictional transparency can stick to physical servers if they prefer to. This is better in terms of both transparency and privacy.

However, users who want greater certainty about where their data is processed may prefer a VPN that not only labels virtual servers but also publicly discloses the physical hosting locations behind them. VPNs such as Surfshark and ExpressVPN offer greater transparency in this area.

Winner: NordVPN is better for server coverage

App interface and multi-platform support

NordVPN app support and ease of use:

NordVPN offers a polished interface that is well-suited to beginners and advanced users alike.
The app comes with a “Quick Connect” button and an interactive world map, which makes it easy to get started with privacy and tracking protection, or to change your IP address to a specific country.

The apps make it easy to find dedicated servers for P2P, Double VPN, or obfuscation. This means you can quickly enable extra privacy or choose servers suited to specific tasks, such as streaming, without the confusion you may encounter elsewhere.

Despite having a greater number of advanced features, I found NordVPN’s settings menu easy to navigate. The menus are clearly structured, with advanced settings clearly labeled and controlled using simple toggles.

NordVPN also provides good consistency across its apps. This makes it easier to switch from a smartphone to a tablet or desktop computer without having to learn a different interface. NordVPN offers apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Fire TV, Linux (via command line), and tvOS, making it one of the most cross-compatible VPNs on the market.

It also offers router support, which is good news for users with mixed-device households that want VPN protection applied automatically.

Bitdefender VPN app support and ease of use:

Bitdefender VPN is designed with average home users and beginners in mind, rather than tech-savvy users with advanced needs. The app automatically selects the fastest server and displays basic connection stats, making it easy to see how much data has been sent over the VPN. Server selection and core features like the kill switch, split tunneling, and ad blocking are also easy to enable.

As with NordVPN, I have included a list of which features are available across its various apps:

*Ad and tracker blocking functionality is limited and may rely on Bitdefender’s broader security ecosystem rather than operating as a standalone VPN feature across all platforms.

Bitdefender supports Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS with up to 10 simultaneous connections, but it does not support Linux, routers, smart TVs, gaming consoles, or browser extensions. This makes it less comprehensive than NordVPN. It is also worth noting that some features are platform-specific. The macOS app, for example, lacks split tunneling and the advanced auto-connect options available on Windows.

Winner: NordVPN is better for users who want flexibility, advanced tools, and broad device support.

Security and privacy

A VPN is, first and foremost, a privacy tool. This means it should be capable of protecting your internet activities against local wifi snooping, ISPs, and common threats such as tracking by public wifi or Evil Twin hotspots (fake hotspots controlled by hackers).

The good news? Both NordVPN and Bitdefender offer a choice of secure protocols like OpenVPN, WireGuard, and NordLynx (which is Nord’s custom WireGuard fork). These protocols use modern ciphers such as AES-256 or ChaCha20 to prevent your web traffic from being intercepted.

Although both VPNs offer reliable protection against tracking and surveillance, they are not equal when it comes to jurisdictional exposure, transparency, and proof of their privacy claims.

NordVPN: The gold standard for privacy

NordVPN has been carefully developed to provide robust online privacy and strong security for data sent over the internet. Its apps, policies, and infrastructure have been independently audited on numerous occasions by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Deloitte.

These audits verified that NordVPN does not store IP addresses, browsing activity, connection timestamps, or DNS queries, and confirmed that the service fully complies with its no-logs promises.

The value of this kind of independent auditing is that it allows NordVPN to identify and improve any non-critical issues over time, while ensuring users do not have to take its privacy claims on trust alone. This level of recurring, third-party verification makes NordVPN one of the most transparent VPN providers on the market.

Jurisdiction

Where a VPN is headquartered can have a direct impact on the level of privacy it provides. The good news is that NordVPN is headquartered in Panama, a privacy-friendly jurisdiction with no mandatory data retention laws. Because Panama sits outside the Five, Nine, and 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances, NordVPN is not required to retain data that could be used to link your online activities back to you, even if it were served with a data request or warrant.

Encryption and protocols

NordVPN offers various VPN tunneling protocols implemented with military-grade AES-256 encryption. The VPN supports OpenVPN, IKEv2, and its custom NordLynx protocol (a WireGuard fork with a double-NAT system that prevents any identifiable data from being stored).

Advanced privacy protections

NordVPN operates a diskless server setup, which means it can wipe an entire session simply by rebooting or powering down a server. Because diskless servers run on RAM, data is constantly overwritten in memory, which helps minimize session data that could be analyzed in real time. This serves as an added layer of protection in case of emergencies.

It also offers Double VPN (multihop) routing for added privacy, as well as obfuscated servers that make it easier to connect on strict networks and prevent ISPs or government agencies from detecting VPN use in restrictive regions. The customizable kill switch can be applied system-wide or limited to specific applications, depending on your needs.

I tested NordVPN thoroughly for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. The apps worked reliably across all platforms without revealing my real location or any data linked to my local Internet Service Provider. This ensures that the websites you visit cannot identify you based on your connection.

Taken together, these security features make NordVPN suitable for users with an elevated threat model. Journalists, activists, whistleblowers, politicians, lawyers, and political dissidents can all use NordVPN to protect their online activities reliably.

Bitdefender Premium VPN: Solid privacy for beginners

Bitdefender VPN doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as NordVPN, Surfshark, ProtonVPN, or other market-leading services. However, it provides solid baseline defenses for users who want to prevent ISPs, local wifi networks, and public hotspots from tracking their activity.

That said, it is important to acknowledge that the VPN lacks many of the advanced protections you get with NordVPN. Bitdefender has not completed an independent third-party audit verifying its no-logs claims or backend data-handling practices, which means you have to take its privacy claims on faith alone.

In addition, the VPN runs on traditional disk-based servers, which may introduce additional risk in the event of a government seizure or a cyberattack.

Jurisdiction

Bitdefender is headquartered in Romania, a country with no mandatory data retention directives that is also outside the Five Eyes alliance. On the surface, this appears to give it a green light. However, when you look under the hood, things get a bit more nuanced.

In order to provide its VPN service, Bitdefender licenses infrastructure and technology from Hotspot Shield. While this is widely accepted as a robust VPN service (particularly on the paid platform), it is operated by a US-based company (Pango).

Businesses based in the US can be subject to secret warrants and gag orders. This means the underlying service provider (Hotspot Shield) could be compelled to provide any information it has on file.

American legal requests can apply to all the systems that a company operates, regardless of where individual VPN servers or subscribers are based. This doesn’t intrinsically mean that all Bitdefender users are actively logged or monitored, but it does mean that the US could request data or force Hotspot Shield to start logging in secret. Due to the way gag orders are structured, management at Hotspot Shield may not even be able to disclose to Bitdefender that its users are also implicated.

This introduces non-trivial jurisdictional considerations that privacy-focused users may prefer to sidestep altogether.

No logs policy

A growing number of antivirus companies have begun to add VPN services to their security suites. Unfortunately, these VPNs often have a one-size-fits-all privacy policy that applies to both the antivirus and the VPN. These policies frequently contain gray areas that create uncertainty around data collection and logging, making it difficult to know how VPN traffic and metadata are handled.

Thankfully, Bitdefender does not fall into the worst category of antivirus-fronted VPNs. It has published a dedicated Bitdefender VPN No-Log Policy, which clearly states that it does not store browsing history, IP addresses, connection timestamps, or destination websites. According to the policy, the service only uses temporary, non-identifying session data to maintain connections and performance, and this information is discarded once the session ends.

Bitdefender’s policy also claims to have undergone a third-party audit. However, since the results have not been published, it is not possible to make any claims regarding its findings. Because the audit report is not public, there is no way to know whether auditors actually inspected servers, configurations, and logging systems, or simply reviewed the wording of the policy. This uncertainty is compounded by the fact that Bitdefender’s VPN runs on Hotspot Shield’s underlying infrastructure, which has not published full audits either.

Users who care deeply about transparency and trust are advised to stick to NordVPN or another provider with fully audited apps, policies, and infrastructure.

Encryption and features

Bitdefender Premium VPN protects user data with AES-256 encryption and supports multiple protocols, including the proprietary Catapult Hydra protocol. While Hydra is fast and uses AES-256 encryption with built-in obfuscation, it is closed-source. This means its security properties cannot be independently verified.

In terms of advanced features, it is relatively thin on the ground compared to NordVPN. However, it does offer a system-level kill switch, rotating IP functionality, and split tunneling (select platforms only).

All things considered, Bitdefender VPN offers adequate protection for users seeking to prevent online tracking and gain streaming access while on vacation. However, users with an elevated threat model may prefer to opt for a more privacy-focused service, like Nord.

Winner: NordVPN is better for privacy and security

NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN – Streaming and unblocking

Any credible VPN review must prioritize privacy and security features. That said, it’s also important to acknowledge consumers’ interest in bypassing geographic restrictions via location spoofing. Many VPNs have large server networks that extend to 50 countries or more. Despite this, many services fall short when it comes to accessing popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max.

Streaming providers are well aware that consumers use VPNs to bypass regional licensing restrictions. To comply with broadcast agreements, providers must be seen to actively prevent unauthorized cross-region access. This is why they attempt to block access from as many VPNs as possible.

Most VPNs don’t have the expertise or resources needed to stay ahead of streaming-platform VPN blocks. This means they often fall short when it comes to accessing international TV and video-on-demand platforms.

The good news? A small number of VPNs know how to stay a step ahead in this cat-and-mouse game. They constantly monitor their servers and refresh IP addresses to maintain access to streaming-optimized locations. So, how do NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN compare in this landscape?

Streaming performance: NordVPN

NordVPN is one of the most reliable VPNs I’ve tested for streaming. In my tests, it consistently worked with major international platforms and delivered speeds fast enough for HD and 4K streaming.

NordVPN worked seamlessly to access Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, YouTube TV, and DAZN (US). Connections were stable, lag was minimal, and streams loaded quickly – even during peak hours. This makes NordVPN ideal for watching home services on vacation, or for bypassing wifi blocks to stream content at work.

Netflix performance was also impressive. I used NordVPN to access a wide choice of libraries in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Australia. Image quality was ideal, and I encountered no buffering (testing on a regular home broadband connection).

Need to stream on a device that won’t let you install a VPN app directly? Every NordVPN subscriber also gets access to its Smart DNS feature (SmartPlay). This provides access to US content on smart TVs, set-top boxes, consoles, and other devices that can’t run VPN apps directly.

NordVPN also proved to be exceptional when accessing international platforms. During testing, it worked to stream ARD Mediathek in Germany, France.tv, Globoplay, CBC Gem, and Australia’s 10Play. Streaming performance: Bitdefender VPN

Bitdefender VPN delivered solid results for streaming during my tests. It worked reliably with many popular US and UK services and provided fast enough speeds for HD streaming, with minimal buffering. Just bear in mind that some international servers are slower than others, so performance may vary depending on the catalog or service you try to access.

Bitdefender VPN worked to watch Netflix libraries in the US, UK, Canada, Japan, and Australia, which puts it in a box with some of the better VPNs for Netflix. It also worked with BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and some Amazon Prime Video regions during testing.

Playback across these platforms was generally stable, making Bitdefender a good option for users who want to regain access to UK and US TV platforms while on vacation.

I also tested Bitdefender VPN with a selection of free international streaming platforms. It worked well with ARD Mediathek in Germany, France.tv in France, and CBC Gem in Canada. However, access was more limited elsewhere. For example, GloboPlay in Brazil failed to load, and Australia’s 10Play was also blocked.

Overall, Bitdefender VPN worked better than expected to bypass streaming blocks. The fact that it worked with so many international platforms puts it well ahead of the VPNs offered by most antivirus companies. However, users who want the best global coverage and the highest level of consistency will still prefer NordVPN.

Torrenting

NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN both allow torrenting across their server networks. This means you can engage in P2P file sharing regardless of which server you choose. Both VPNs also support split tunneling, which is useful if you want to keep torrents private while routing other traffic through your regular, unprotected internet connection.

The main drawback with both VPNs is that they don’t offer port forwarding. This is a feature that helps make seeding easier with many torrent clients. Users who torrent regularly and want to stay in good standing with their torrent communities by seeding may prefer a VPN that offers port forwarding.

Winner: NordVPN is better for streaming access and torrenting

Customer service

Both these VPNs take customer care seriously and provide multiple ways for you to get help, including 24/7 live chat and email support. Live chat is the fastest option with both services, making it easy to get answers to any setup or usage questions you might have.

The only real difference is in terms of focus. NordVPN’s support is dedicated solely to its VPN service, which means that agents are trained exclusively to deal with VPN problems, features, and settings. You also get dedicated FAQs and guides designed exclusively to help VPN users to troubleshoot issues. You can even talk to Nord’s live chat before subscribing – if you have any pre-purchase concerns.

Bitdefender VPN also offers an impressive range of support channels, including rare phone support. However, because Bitdefender’s support staff are trained across multiple products – including antivirus, identity protection, and other security tools – you may sometimes need to wait for a response to a query via email.

I also found Bitdefender’s support a touch harder to reach initially. The website forces you to navigate a larger product support system before being connected to a team member. This is meant to get you better support, but it feels a little cumbersome compared to how quickly NordVPN’s live chat launches.

Winner: NordVPN is a touch simpler and more focused when it comes to customer support.

NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN both provide decent privacy protections. However, based on my head-to-head comparison across security, privacy, speed, streaming, features, and usability, NordVPN will be a better choice for most home users.

NordVPN consistently outperformed Bitdefender VPN across my 8 test categories. It delivered faster speeds, more reliable streaming access, and a wider selection of privacy features.

Nord’s audited no-logs policy, Panama jurisdiction, diskless server network, obfuscation, and Double VPN routing options make it better for users with an elevated threat model. I also recommend NordVPN over Bitdefender for users living in regions with high levels of surveillance and censorship.

Bitdefender VPN is much simpler, which can be a benefit for beginners. Although you do have the option to buy it as a standalone VPN, it offers fewer advanced tools and less accountability. This makes it better for users who need basic VPN use. And it makes the most sense for users who already want Bitdefender’s antivirus and security tools. Under these circumstances, bundling the VPN can improve overall value for money.
