Methodology: Finding the best VPNs for an Italian IP address

Technically, all that’s needed to get an Italian IP address is an Italian VPN server. In practice, though, there are several other things you’ll have to pay attention to, especially if you’re hoping to stream Italian TV from abroad. To ensure you get the best possible service for your needs, we tested providers in the following areas:

Versatility

We began by scoring providers based on the number of Italian server locations they had, as this can be a useful indicator of the number of IP addresses available. We then scored them on the number of other countries they supported, and their overall streaming ability when accessing content libraries specific to those countries. Finally, we scored them on the number of simultaneous connections they allowed.

These scores were weighted and then converted to an overall score out of 10 for each provider. This makes a direct comparison easier.

NordVPN was, again, the stand-out provider, with a score of 9.5. It has servers in three Italian locations and a further 117 countries. ExpressVPN also has servers in three Italian locations, though it supports slightly fewer countries than NordVPN.

Speed

Every VPN will slow your connection to some degree. Still, we prioritized those that have as small an impact as possible. We found the fastest VPNs by carrying out multiple speed tests over the course of a day.

We connected to each provider’s servers in Italy and measured the resulting download speeds using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app. For reference, our base connection speed was rate-limited to 250 Mbps, as this is the average speed of home broadband in the US.

Once the results were in, we averaged them and converted them to an overall score out of 10 that was relative to the scores of the other providers.

Using a free VPN to get an Italian IP address

Although it might be tempting to search for ‘free VPN Italia’, we really don’t recommend using a free VPN to get an Italian IP address. For starters, these services tend to group their servers in the UK and the US, so you might struggle to find a free VPN with Italian servers. But even if you do, these providers tend to have smaller networks than paid providers. This means that more users are sharing the same servers, which can result in extremely slow speeds. Further, these services often have low monthly bandwidth caps, which limits the amount of time you’ll be able to stream even further.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, free VPNs often come riddled with security problems. Some fail to encrypt user traffic at all, while others rely entirely on obfuscation (which is far less secure) instead.
