Methodology: Finding the best VPNs for getting a Netherlands IP address

While there are hundreds of VPNs on the market, not all of them are suitable for getting — and using — a Dutch IP address. Many can’t even be relied on to keep your internet traffic private, which is a basic function of a VPN. To ensure you get a high-quality all-round experience, we tested providers in the following key areas:

Network suitability

We started by checking that providers had servers in the Netherlands that can give you a Dutch IP address. We then checked each provider’s global distribution of servers — and scored them accordingly. Finally, we tested them with various geo-restricted services to see if they were blocked. As well as Dutch services like AT5 and NPO Start, we were particularly interested in whether they could access stubborn platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer.

The scores for the above were weighted and then combined to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider. This makes a side-by-side comparison possible, as the chart below demonstrates.

Speed

If your speeds are too slow, you won’t actually be able to do very much while connected to a Dutch IP address. To emulate the experience of an average user, we limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps (which is slightly less than the median fixed broadband speed in the US). Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app.

The results for each provider were averaged. These averages were converted to overall scores out of 10 for comparison.
