ProtonVPN has an incredibly large network, with 18,000 servers in nearly 130 countries. There are over 200 in Bucharest, Romania too, meaning you’ll be able to stream Antena 3 and TVR from anywhere. IPVanish has made some dramatic improvements lately. Its network now covers 100+ countries and while its website doesn’t give exact server numbers, I was able to check in-app and see nearly 50 servers in Romania alone. This VPN lets you connect as many devices as you like and reliably works with TVR 1, Netflix US, and Disney+. There’s also 24/7 support over live chat but as this is one of the most intuitive VPNs on the market, you’ll hopefully never need to get in touch.

This is all very impressive but not much help if IPVanish is too slow for streaming. Thankfully, its three speed tests went very well, with an average speed of 153.62 Mbps and just 4 Mbps of variability. For context, that’s significantly higher than is required for watching 4K video, torrenting, or playing online games. Take a look:

There are very few limits on what you can access; given that this service is able to beat China’s Great Firewall, unblocking sites like TVR, Crave, and Hulu is child’s play. That said, most everyday activities like streaming and gaming only need a fraction of this, so you shouldn’t notice any performance issues unless you’re downloading or sharing your connection. Using a free VPN to get a Romanian IP address

Free VPNs can be attractive but they actually come with several major disadvantages. First, you’re unlikely to find a free VPN with servers in Romania, which means you won’t be able to gain a Romanian IP address. 

Free services usually have limited networks yet more users than the majority of paid VPNs. This causes network slowdown, which manifests as slow speeds and videos that pause frequently to buffer if they load at all. Free VPNs are also usually the first to be blacklisted by streaming sites, making them highly-unreliable overall.

There are more concerning risks, too. Since these VPNs are ‘free’, the services find other ways to create profit. Often, they’ll sell ad space or offer increased speeds for a monthly fee, but some go even further. By storing tracking cookies on your device, these companies can gather data about how you use the internet. This can then be sold to advertisers later, most commonly without your knowledge.

It can be difficult to even find a safe, free VPN. In the past, I’ve seen a major provider sell idle user bandwidth to help run a botnet. Unfortunately, when well-known VPNs resort to shady business tactics, smaller services are more inclined to act the same way; analysis of 280+ free VPN apps showed almost 40% contained malware, while 18% used no encryption, and over 80% were vulnerable to IPv6 leaks.

How to check if your IP address has changed to Romania

There are a few different ways to tell if your VPN has successfully changed your IP address or not. The easiest method is to use one of the many tools specifically created for this purpose.
