You may struggle to keep up with your favorite Malaysian TV shows while traveling abroad. That’s because the likes of TV3 and NTV7 are region-locked and unavailable outside Malaysia. It’s not just TV channels either. Major streaming services like Netflix and some national news sites have the same type of regional restrictions. Luckily, there’s an easy way to bypass these restrictions. You just need to use a VPN.
When you use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to connect to a server in Malaysia, you’re assigned a Malaysian IP address. This makes it look as if you’re accessing online content from within Malaysia. As such, you can access content that would otherwise be geo-restricted. Further, your internet connection is secured with powerful encryption, protecting your privacy and making it harder for snoopers, hackers, government agencies, or your ISP to track your online activity.
Can’t wait to get started? Here’s a quick summary of each of the best VPNs for watching Malaysian TV abroad. If you’d like more information to help you make a decision, we cover each VPN in more depth further below.

Methodology: How we find the best VPNs for Malaysian TV
There are multiple factors to take into account when choosing a VPN, particularly one that’s being used for streaming. We focused our testing on the following areas:
Speed
There’s little point being able to access Malaysian TV if your VPN is too slow to support consistent streaming. To ensure that you do not experience this, we carried out a series of speed tests to find the quickest providers.
We connected to each VPN’s Malaysian servers and recorded the resulting download speeds three times over the course of a day. We limited our base connection speed to emulate that of the average user in the US (where the median broadband speed is 291.18 Mbps). Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app.
The results for each provider were averaged and then converted to a score out of 10 for comparison.
NordVPN was the fastest provider overall, though Surfshark was also notably quick. Either VPN is an excellent choice if you want the best chance of preserving your base connection speed (all VPNs will slow your connection a little) while streaming, gaming or torrenting.
Network suitability
We scored providers on the number of countries they had servers in, as well as their ability to access streaming services around the globe. Versatility is a useful trait in a VPN. We also scored them on their ability to bypass restrictions imposed by countries such as China, the UAE and Egypt.
These three scores were weighted and combined to generate overall scores out of 10 for each provider.
NordVPN’s score of 9.7 was highest. It has servers in an unparalleled 118 countries and worked with every streaming platform that we tried it with. Furthermore, its NordWhisper protocol means you can use it in the most restrictive of countries. ExpressVPN and Surfshark are also impressive, though they have fewer servers than NordVPN.
Security and privacy
Many people use VPNs to bolster their online security. After all, there are all kinds of online threats, be it from phishing attempts or viruses. The trouble is that many VPNs fail to offer sufficient security. With this in mind, we looked for quality VPNs that encrypt your internet traffic and protect you from leaks at all times. The best providers also performed well against the other test metrics outlined below.

If you’d prefer a quick overview instead, the following chart combines the scores for each metric used in the table above.
NordVPN and Surfshark each scored 9.5. They both use effectively uncrackable encryption and RAM-only servers. In addition, they both have independently audited no-logs policies. ProtonVPN and PIA are great alternatives.
Ease of use
A VPN may seem a little intimidating but the best are actually very easy to use. We specifically looked for providers with beginner-friendly apps and that offered solid customer support. You can see the other ease-of-use criteria we used below.

After scoring each metric, we combined them to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider. This makes a side-by-side comparison possible.
NordVPN and PIA were the easiest to use providers overall. Their apps are appealingly designed and provide lots of functionality — including task-specific servers. In addition, they make it easy to sign up for subscriptions — or cancel them as the case may be. IPVanish and ExpressVPN are also highly recommended.
Value for money
VPNs vary in price and quality, though the two don’t always correlate. We looked for the best-value providers by finding those that keep their prices keen with discounts, generous money-back guarantees, and introductory offers.

Each of the above metrics was given a score, which were combined to generate overall scores out of 10 for each VPN.
Surfshark’s score of 9.7 was highest, though IPVanish was very close behind. Both providers allow unlimited simultaneous device connections and have great-value two-year introductory offers. Surfshark is the cheaper of the two, though there’s not much in it.
Watching Malaysian TV with a VPN: FAQ
Can I watch Malaysian TV abroad with a free VPN?
Most free VPNs don’t offer servers in Malaysia, and those that do tend to be relatively poor at unblocking geo-restricted content. You’ll also notice that free VPN servers are typically very slow. This is particularly obvious when streaming due to the lag and buffering you’ll encounter as a result. While a free VPN may access some Malaysian TV platforms, most will struggle with larger streaming services such as Netflix.
Another reason why we don’t recommend you use a free VPN is the lack of privacy protection. Some free VPNs don’t use encryption, while others may not protect you from data leaks with a kill switch. In fact, some free VPNs make money off your data by logging and selling this information to third parties.
For uninterrupted streaming of Malaysian TV, while maintaining your online security, we recommend using a quality paid VPN like the ones listed above or in our best VPNs for Malaysia article.
Which Malaysian TV channels can I watch online for free?
There are a number of national, free-to-air terrestrial TV channels in Malaysia. With a VPN, you can unblock them all. This includes the following:
- TV1
- TV2
- TV Okey
- NTV7
- 8TV
- TV3
- TV9
Why do Malaysian streaming services ban international viewers?
Chances are you’ve tried to access a Malaysian streaming service from abroad and found the content to be region-locked. This isn’t unique to streaming services from Malaysia and is a common issue encountered by streamers worldwide.
The reason for it is that content is subject to copyright, and the streaming services in question don’t hold the rights to show it outside Malaysia. The content is geo-blocked as a result in order to protect it — it’s nothing personal!
Is it illegal to unblock Malaysian TV from abroad with a VPN?
No, it’s not illegal to use a VPN to access Malaysian streaming platforms and online TV broadcasts. And the authorities don’t single out individuals for using a VPN in this way.
Admittedly, accessing geo-restricted services from abroad is often against streaming providers’ terms of service. However, those platforms spend their time blacklisting VPN IP addresses rather than chasing down people who use VPNs.
